Turkey in August - too hot?

CaughtInAMouseTrap · 23/06/2019 03:12

It will be our first holiday abroad, 3 kids, 3, 6 and 7 years.
Would Turkey be too hot mid August? Or would it be manageable?

“August is high season and it remains exceedingly hot and sunny. As such is bustling and vibrant at this time of year. The average daily temperature in August is 27 degrees Celsius. This estimated temperature includes a potential low of 21 degrees Celsius and a high of up to 33 degrees Celsius.”

Depends where you are staying, are you willing to spend a long time in your air conditioned room

I’m sure the children will love the pool but will you spend the time worrying about them getting burnt

Maybe a change of month to take into account their ages

My parents came back 2 weeks ago and it was 32 degrees in the shade. I’ve been in September and have seen 35+.

If you keep them in the pool they’ll be fine, lots of sunscreen and hats :)

You’ll love it, it is such a beautiful country.

In August temps can be in the 40's.Next week it's due to be 38 degrees.
Turkey is a fabulous country but I'd rethink the time of year going.

ListenLinda · 23/06/2019 08:21

I am assuming August because of school holidays OP? It can be hot whenever you go, you will have to take care with the heat for you all.

Barbarafromblackpool · 23/06/2019 08:22

I found it too hot in Turkey during August. (Bodrum) but I was trying to slep round historical sites of interest.

CaughtInAMouseTrap · 23/06/2019 08:46

Thanks for the replies.
Yes we were thinking August so we didn't have to take them out of school.
We wouldn't want to be sat in our rooms the whole time, the kids would become too bored and unbearable.

I think our biggest concern is it being unbearably hot and we would have to sit in our rooms.

I've been to Turkey in July. It was very very hot. 40 - 45 degrees.

We did manage to get around and see a couple of things but mostly spent it in the pool or in the shade by the pool. Only went to beach twice as it was too hot on the beach.

However I am a person that burns very easily and overheats easily. The friend I was with who tans and doesn't burn was much more comfortable.

Alarae · 23/06/2019 08:55

I went to Turkey in June and it hit 36 degrees on the last day (averaging about 30).

We tried walking outside the complex and managed about five minutes before we were frantically scanning for shade. Ended up paying for a bus back to the hotel as we couldn't face the 15 min journey back in the sun.

Not something I would revisit.

another20 · 23/06/2019 20:11

I have been in July and if you hadn’t got down to the beach and found your spot by 9am it was too hot to walk - if you did get there by then - you were trapped down on the beach until 4pm as it was too hot to walk back. Days round the pool were fine - and I love eating out doors on hot evenings.

BG2015 · 23/06/2019 20:50

I've been to Turkey for a number of years in August. Bodrum, Side, Kusadasi. Very, very hot. Kids were early teens when we went so more independent and sensible.

We didn't do much other than pool,/beach as it's extremely hot but manageable.

marmiteontoastplz · 24/06/2019 21:01

We went Aug one year, before DC. Hit over 40 degrees.. I think too hot for young DC. Ok in shade around pool but as others have said it's way too hot for walking anywhere before dark or after 9 am.

blue25 · 24/06/2019 21:05

Yes, too hot for me. Tried it once-never again. Lovely in October though.

WobblyLondoner · 24/06/2019 21:14

Sorry, my idea of hell. I'd spend the entire time worrying about sunburn - for my son and me. Could you go somewhere cooler if you think you're going to feel the same way?

Nixee2231 · 24/06/2019 23:16

It can be truly horrible in August sorry, especially if you're not used to the heat. 39-40+ days are the norm and some days as high as 43. Even if you don't mind it, it can be dangerous to go out for most of the day, especially for children.

OopsUpSideYerBed · 28/06/2019 08:59

It is hot - last year when we were there it hit 43 degrees. You really do spend a lot of your time in the pool.
It doesn't get cool at night either, you can easily be sitting in 30 degree heat at 9pm.
I love it though - beautiful country.

reluctantbrit · 28/06/2019 09:09

My friend is turkish and they sold their holiday home when the oldest started school as it was a nightmare in Summer for them.

If they now go they go in May half-term.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 28/06/2019 13:40

We always go to Turkey in August, my girls have been going since they were babies.

We have never stayed in the house.
We sit on the beach or by the pool, under the shade if it very hot.

We also go out and about but make sure we are all covered in sun cream with hats and drink plenty of water.

It does get very hot but we love it.

PopWentTheWeasel · 28/06/2019 14:15

OP, I went to Turkey in October for my honeymoon. You needed a cardigan in the evening but it was bikini weather in the day. Maybe one for OCtober half term, especially with your little one.

lanbro · 28/06/2019 14:18

I've been in may and June and was just right, I think August would be too hot for me, even majorca in July was roasting!
