Is it worth a visit? It will probably take us nearly 2 hours to get there from where we are staying.

Any tips, must-see things gratefully recieved.....

Bugger I have just thrown out a leaflet about it which I have had in a drawer for the last three years. But yes it's great. When we went it was in May so out of season and really quiet but I can imagine it gets very busy in the summer months.
You will have to plan your day carefully because all the shows are on at different times and you will need to find your way to different places.
The commentary is all in French but even if you don't understand it you will still get the gist of what's going on.
I specially enjoyed the display of horse-riding and the birds of prey show was good.
Oh my tip would be make sure you have sun cream because a lot of the time when you're watching the shows you're in the full glare of the sun unless you can get a seat on the shady side!

our mates used to live close & went a lot. They frankly used to be very rude about it - and certainly didn't allow us to visit when we were over there ... sorry - not much help am I?!

wordgirl · 25/07/2007 21:59

If they were rude about it why did they go a lot

Yes we went when we were staying in the Vendee in 2005. It was excellent - I'd highly recommend it. We went with two other families with children ranging from 13 to 3 and all loved it. We were there in August and it was busy but we still got in to all the shows we wanted - probably helped by paying a bit more for some sort of priority seating pass which meant we got good seats in each show. The best shows were the birds of prey (really amazing) and the Roman Colesseum show - don't think our health and safety rules here would allow it here - but they were all excellent.

yes, it is very good. Very hot and very lacking in shade, so take hats and lots of sun lotion.

Roman thing is excellent as is the knight in shining armour batter. get there early and plan to get round as many shows as possible

you can't picnic, but the food isn't bad and isn';t horribly expensive.

Never done the night time thingm, my kids were too small at the time

We went last year at the beginning of August. It was extremely busy but the capacity for each show is enormous. If you go, study the guide carefully so that you see as many as you can - we weren't organised enough. Try and get there early as the queue to get in was massive but I think you can book in advance. Didn't think much of the eateries and would advise a packed lunch but it is a trek from the carpark. It is a spectacle in every sense and our children loved it. Would also recommend the headphones for anyone with limited French.
