What can I order off a menu in Italy for my DS?

We are on a road trip around Italy which means we will probably end up in non-English speaking areas. Very exciting but we have 1 year old DS and he is allergic to both eggs & tomato’s. What can we order for him apart from Carbonara? Really struggling for ideas. He eats most things and does love fish but I’m cautious about bones. TIA

In fact he can’t even eat fresh pasta!

Or carbonara! Theres egg in the sauce.

FirstTimeDogParent · 18/06/2019 17:46

I was going to say please don’t order carbonara, it is egg based! The sauce isn’t made with cream, it is made with eggs.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/06/2019 17:47

There’s a risk of eggs on the pasta though. Fish/meat and veg /salad?

Heratnumber7 · 18/06/2019 17:49

Salad. Risotto. Plain veg. Bread and salami or cheese. Gnocchi (not sure if this has eggs)

GotAnyGrapes17 · 18/06/2019 17:49

Order off the main menu rather than the pasta menu. The meat dishes are fairly plain, various cutlets etc. Bread, fruit, ham and cheese patters are all fairly common over there. Chips. Not ideal, but it's not forever. What does he eat here.

So may be worth using google translate for waiting staff if allergies are severe.

Pizza Bianca is made with no tomato sauce, mainly cheese I think. Risotto, there will probably be some lovely regional dishes depending on which bit of the country.

SingingLily · 18/06/2019 17:52

Be careful - carbonara contains egg in Italy, not cream. You could ask for pasta cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper), pasta aglio e olio (garlic and olive oil) or pasta pesto.

The Italian for egg is uovo and for tomato, it's pomodoro, so if you simply say "no uovo, no pomodoro", the waiter will understand. Italians love children and will make a huge fuss of them. Enjoy your holiday!

FirstTimeDogParent · 18/06/2019 17:52

Risotto
Meat dishes (steaks, osso bucco)
Polenta as your starch
Fish

dementedpixie · 18/06/2019 17:53

Not all pasta contains egg. You get plain durum wheat pasta too.

SingingLily · 18/06/2019 17:53

Sorry, just saw he can't eat pasta either. Gnocchi is fine - it's made with polenta - and as others have suggested, risotto.

Bluntness100 · 18/06/2019 17:54

Meat, potato, salad, veg. Just what you'd eat at home. Italian food is very focused on meat, salad, veg dishes,

Don't order him pizza or pasta, especially carbonara.

MustardScreams · 18/06/2019 17:55

Gnocchi doesn’t usually have eggs, but I wouldn’t risk it just in case. Ricotta gnudi definitely does so don’t order that.

Carbonara is eggs and cheese so don’t order that!

You should be ok with meats, salads, white pizzas etc.

Use Google translate for egg and tomato allergy and screenshot it so you can show the waiters or wherever you are even if you don’t have signal.

Needadvices · 18/06/2019 17:56

just order a secondo(comes after main course eg meat or fish)or soup,or risotto,or ask them pasta with butter sauce,if you say where ur going exactly it would be easier.

MustardScreams · 18/06/2019 17:56

@SingingLily gnocchi is made with potatoes and flour, some recipes include egg yolks also.

ememem84 · 18/06/2019 17:56

Not carbonara as there’s egg in the sauce.

Salad? Risotto?

dementedpixie · 18/06/2019 17:57

Pasta would be ok if just made with durum wheat (not all contain eggs)

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/06/2019 18:00

Pizza Bianca has no ‘red’. If you don’t speak Italian then best to have it written down so there is no mistake.

SingingLily · 18/06/2019 18:00

Thank you, MustardScreams. It's a minefield! I'm allergic to all forms of shellfish and once had a stopover in Bangkok where even veggie dishes are doused in sauce made from shellfish.

BertrandRussell · 18/06/2019 18:01

Grilled meat. Grilled fish. Green vegetables. Chips! Fruit. Cheese.

Get a little card printed with what his allergies are - I’m sure there’s a mumsnetter who can translate something for you- so you can show the waiter so you’re sure you understand.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/06/2019 18:03

I hate to say it but a friends little girl couldn’t eat pizzas in one chain of pizzarias because there was deffo egg in there somewhere (maybe white on the crust?).

Do get the information printed up - it they will bend over backwards for a little child! We had such amazing meals in Italy when DS was little and gorgeous! They seemed very happy to produce food off menu for kids!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/06/2019 18:04

Oh - not that we very asked for anything off menu - and cakes and ice cream was often produced for him too so watch out for that.

Pegase · 18/06/2019 18:05

Oh my goodness never order carbonara! Outside of maybe a supermarket ready meal, the sauce is always beaten eggs (UK or Italy).

TinklyLittleLaugh · 18/06/2019 18:08

Lots of Italian food is very simple meat, fish, veg and salad. Nice but a bit plain.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/06/2019 18:09

Lovely bread and cheese, fruit and veg, hams...
