Have to cancel holiday but no insurance

Has anyone had to cancel a holiday due to health issues or personal , but hasn't taken insurance yet?

I ask as I am experiencing pregnancy issues and I am no longer allowed to fly, these pregnancy issues happened just as I was about to take out travel insurance. We've paid 900 on the holiday, and we desperately Need that money back now we are almost living in hospital. Has anyone got any advice ? I doubt I'll get any money back if I have insurance.

Please no nasty comments just desperate for some advice x

Have you booked through an agent? You may be able to change the holiday for later dates, but it's very unlikely you'll get your money back.
Or you can find out how much it would cost to change the names on the booking and then sell the holiday.
It's such a shame you can't go.

I’m not sure there is any advice. How long is it until you go? How many weeks until due date? I’m afraid you took a risk and I’m not sure what you can do other than beg the travel company to rearrange and go after baby is born! That would be better than losing the money. Is £900 the full price?

If you have no insurance, then the only possibility of getting any money back is to throw yourself on the mercy of the company you have booked your holiday with. Or see if you can sell it on to friend

Even if you had insurance you probably wouldn't get your money back I'm afraid. Most travel insurance policies have a pregnancy exclusion. I think your best bet is to rearrange for when you can go.

Soontobe60 · 17/06/2019 17:16

Sorry, op, but I feel you have lost that money!

tuxedocatsintophats · 17/06/2019 17:16

Maybe try to rearrange?

Sometimes you can get a percentage of the money back, depending on how close to travelling you are. Speak to the people you booked with.

MSE travel advice

May be worth reading this MSE article. I’m sorry to say it’s unlikely if you haven’t got insurance. People should always book insurance when booking their holiday.

Totally depends on who you have booked with.
I very nearly had to cancel a holiday due to similar reasons as yourself but I didn't. However I made enquires to find out if I could get money back etc..
Our flights were booked with Easyjet, I spoke to them on their online chat and told them of the situation and they offered to give me a flight voucher of the sum of the flights I'd paid for all ready to be used at a later date.
Then I contacted on the beach about the hotel, best bet is to do that through social media as they're more helpful than on the phone. After a few messages they came back with that the hotel would refund us the full cost at no extra charge.
Be honest with them and fingers crossed they can sort something for you.

Call up your bookings, some may allow to cancel for a charge, airlines really depends on who, some allow you to delay or get a voucher

I don’t think you can do unless you speak to someone compassionate at the holiday company or you can sell the holiday on... I’d start advertising, work internal sites are always a good place to start? You’d need to take a hit of a few hundred probably but you’d get some back

LIZS · 17/06/2019 17:26

There is usually a scale of cancellation charges which increases to 100% within so many days of departure. So if it was still a few weeks away you may be able to claim some money back from TO and would normally recoup the rest (less excess and costs) via travel insurance. Do check you don't have travel insurance with your bank account or another policy too.

I got a refund once from a ferry company when i had a miscarriage - it was a non refundable ticket but they just decided to be decent about it.

Tax on unused flights is also refundable.
