Germany Road Trip

Can anyone help me with a bit of Germany advice? We have never done a European road trip holiday before and quite fancy it for summer 2020. We think Germany would be a good idea because we would particularly like to visit Berlin, Munich and Europa Park.
We could either drive and take ferry from Newcastle to Netherlands. Or we could fly and hire a car...this would mean that we could go in and out of different airports.
Can anyone advise us how to join up the dots over a 2 week period? Our son has been to Berlin and loved it and wants to show us it, otherwise we've never been at all. We'd ideally like to travel no more than 4 hours per day. We like the idea of castles, cake, theme parks, cities and countryside...and would like a longer base in the middle of the trip for 5-7 days.
Anyone done any German trips? Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Hainault, we did a week road trip last year. Flew into Munich, picked up a camper van and travelled around Bavaria. We visited Zugspitze (gorgeous), Oberammergau, king Ludwig's castles, lake chiemsee, Salzburg and then a huge water park (therme erding) for the kids at the end. Loved every minute, Germany is beautiful and the people were great!

Berlin to Munich is a full day driving. Driving to either from the anetherlands is around 1 1/2 days.

How about flying to Munich, hiring a car for a week and staying at a base. I am personally not the biggest fan of Bavaria, I don’t like mountains, but what I remember from time spend it is a great area to do lots of things and worth a visit if you like that kind of location.

After a week drop of the car and take the train to Berlin, you def don’t need or want a car there.

I’d definitely fly. I’d spend four nights in Berlin first; there’s so much to do. Then I’d take the sprinter train straight from Berlin to Munich. It’s four hours and so much less stress than driving. I’d stay for 3 nights in Munich city centre and then hire a car. Stay 5 nights at Center Parcs Allgau (from where you can visit Neuschwanstein Castle) and then 2 nights at Europa (one full day in the park) and then take the car back to Munich airport and fly home.

We took the sprinter train from Munich to Berlin. It goes via Nuremburg so we decided to get off there and explore the city for about 3 hours before continuing our journey.

I’ve never stayed at Center Parcs Allgau. It was built last year and I’ve seen really good reviews for it. The European Center Parcs are so different to the ones in the UK. They’re more peaceful and better value for money. They still offer such a good range of activities though, and the indoor swimming complex at Allgau looks amazing.

Have you thought about taking the train? The German rail network is fast, punctual, and very comfortable. Fly to München, hire a car and cover the castles and lakes by day trip. Salzburg is a nice day trip by train from München. Train to Berlin, where you definitely do not want (or need) a car. Fly home.

To include Europa Park, fly to München, do the Bayerische day trip thing with a hire car, train to Europa Park, train to Berlin, fly home.
