Am thinking of this as an option in October half term. Me, and three DC - 15, 11 and 9. We will probably have four nights there, so three full days. I don’t drive so we’d be relying on tours to go places, which is fine. What are the must sees and waste of times? I’ve never been so want to make the most of our time.
Also, ds is severely allergic to a range of different things (milk, nuts, eggs, etc). Are we going to be ok in restaurants if we make that clear or should we look for an Airbnb or similar so we can do our own cooking?

Definitely do the Golden Circle tour. The one with the Secret Lagoon thrown in is fantastic You see the geysers, the waterfalls, the place where the tectonic plates meet and parliament was invented, and then you swim in a hot spring. When we went it was dark by the time we swam so it was starlit - amazing.
Depending on time of year, there are whale watching trips, Northern Lights trips etc.
We stayed in an airbnb. Supermarkets were about the same price as UK (and the one wine shop in the whole of Iceland is also similar price to UK ) but eating out was expensive.
We liked the outdoor swimming pools, climbing up Hallgrimskirke tower, pottering about the music and coffee shops.

Thank you! I shall make sure we add The Secret Lagoon to a Golden Circle tour. And swimming pools in the city look amazing - it would never have occurred to me to do that, so thank you!

The swimming pools in the city are great. Really cheap, clean and good fun. They have massive floating chess boards. Theone we went to had a huge dark tower lit just by LED rainbow lights. You climb up and up the ice encrusted steps then slide down a twisty tunnel of LED lights into the water. It's just a waterslide but a very fun, long, weird one.

Everyone is so friendly. We went to a music store and ended up staying all afternoon drinking coffee and eating chocolates and doing sketching with the owner!

The ice tower sounds incredible. They would love that - which pool was it?
Sounds as if we do need to build in some time for hanging out in Reykjavík during the time we are there.

It was Laugardalslaug. I think there's a zoo there too - didn't visit. Apparently Sundhollin is supposed to be one of the best baths but it was closed for renovations when we were there, so you might want to look that up too. The water is lovely and warm - natural thermal pools - great thing to do with the kids when it gets dark early.

Gateway To Iceland are great. I did their Hot Golden Circle Tour and the final stop at the 'secret lagoon' was memorable. They specialise in small group tours, no more than 16 in a group. Can also recommend City Comfort Apartments.
