Cost of a holiday

How much do people think should be sent on a family holiday ? We have 3 children and spend in the region of £5-6k, for 10-14 days. In August. I think Europe is over priced so we end up going further (Dubai is the kids favourite destination). We looked at Turkey and Greece , but it's a seller's market in Summer so you end up paying a crazy amount .
We can only afford one holiday a year . And we are very grateful . But I do think it's far too much .... We have tried going away in the UK, Its ok but places like centre parcs are soon expensive - centre parcs for a week comes to £2.5k!

I normally do 3 weeks at Eurocamp/gite/apartment and bring it in at much less. It depends what you want though. If you want AI and all mod cons, well that costs.

Unfortunately it is because it's school holidays that you spend so much. We often book our flights and hotel separate esp for places like Greece. We book the flights literally the minute they are released on websites like easy jet and that's how we have managed to get better deals in the past.

We have often done house swaps. Stayed in amazing houses/apartments in the UK/Europe/US.
So our travel costs were very manageable.
We used guardian home exchange website - I think it's around £35/40 per year.

Much less but we tend to have a couple a year & there's only 3 of us which makes a big difference as if it's a hotel, we'll have one room not two! I book flights on release & use flight comparison sights. New York for the 3 of us in October half term is costing just short of £1.8k for 5 nights (Norwegian flights, studio apartment in Brooklyn). Sri Lanka at Easter cost £2.4k (flights, 4 star hotels & driver). We had three 3/4 day breaks in Italy, France & Portugal last year, all at about £6-700 each & a week in Devon for £750. i do spend a lot of time researching & DIY everything which I think makes a difference

The amount that should be spent on a holiday is surely how just ‘no more than you can afford’???

And it’s not that you can only afford 1 holiday per year, but that you can afford to spend £5-6k on holidays and choose to spend it all on one!

Nothing wrong with that though if that’s what you like/can afford.

babyno5 · 10/06/2019 21:00

I think that's pretty reasonable for Dubai.
Last year was £20k for us in Florida and this year probably about £9k in Tenerife. There are 7 of us

Summerflab · 10/06/2019 21:02

I think as much as you can afford and want to spend- it is so dependent on your income and priorities.

We spend £5000 for 2 on our summer holiday and then probably another £5000 on smaller breaks throughout the year

As people say it is what you can afford. Would camping in France be a cheaper option? Never tried it myself but friends have and like it.

(We could do at least six maybe more week long uk breaks on your budget which would include self catering, food, travel days out etc).

However that is not my budget.
My budget is £650 for everything for three people in August. So we are going with friends and splitting the accommodation cost to make it affordable. And try and have as many cheap or free days out as possible when there.

The best deals are when you book far in advanced.

lovelyupnorth · 10/06/2019 21:32

We are doing 2 weeks in Canada for that budget. Have done 2 weeks in Spain and Sweden for under 2k in school holidays. 2 adults 2 kids.

Airbnb in France. I’m looking for next summer now. 2/3 bed apartment on the beach in Brittany is £600 odd for a week.

LesLavandes · 10/06/2019 22:09

I often travel solo and that stings price wise. Any advice would be appreciated

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 11/06/2019 12:55

We spend about £2k for two weeks in a villa or apartment, usually Greece or Turkey but we have been to Tuscany, Portugal and Croatia in the past few years too.

We book everything separately and I spend a lot of time looking for the best places at the best price :)
