Looking for holiday destination suggestions for 1-2 weeks in the school holidays for my son and me. Somewhere in Europe. Near a beach. Not too touristy yet with other children about and reasonable prices. I am on a fairly limited budget.
I was wondering if someone might have been somewhere they could recommend?
My son is nine and thrives on being with other children. We are both into outdoor, reasonably active activities. I am interested in history and would like to go to a place with historic sites. I do not drive. i would also like to be in a position where other adults are about and there is the opportunity to strike up conversations etc and not be too lonesome but at the sometime not be in a place which is frantic and too busy.

I haven't got any advice unfortunately, but thought I'd tag in to your thread for ideas (and hopefully to give the thread a bump) I'm looking for similar but with a 3yo DS.

If I find anything interesting while I'm looking I'll let you know.

Eurocamp? Or similar. Generally good value and they have tonnes of locations

I really liked Malaga. Flights to Malaga are cheap and there are quite a few places down the coast that are cheap and family friendly, although a bit touristy. We jumped on the bus to Malaga a couple of times and thought it was a lovely little city with nice museums, quite small so walkable with a child. The hotels will also be able to arrange day trips out to various places of interest.

One of my friends goes clamping in France and lives it as the campsite has loads of kids stuff going on but she can also get in a bus and go for a wander around the old town. They stay in a little wooden cottage but it has a bathroom and kitchen. We quite fancy going there so I’ll find out the name. It’s somewhere near Bordeaux. What we call glamping has been popular in France for years though and there are loads of sites across the country. Sounds like you’d like to be near a town or city with a few museums.

Maybe one of the all-inclusive kid centred resorts like Mark Warners or Club Med?

OrchidInTheSun · 04/06/2019 14:28

I think you missed the bit about limited budget Sicario!

OP - you could do a single parent holiday. Some of those are quite cheap and you can join in as much or as little as you like.

Lol at Mark Warner or club med being a budh holiday, they are very expensive and having done that kind of thing, they're brilliant but only if you want to do all the activities which do tend to be beach and water based rather than what the op wants.

In terms of down the coast from Malaga, I’d avoid Torremellinos, Fuerangerola etc but have a look at some of the quieter places that are still on the bus and train route.

Crete might be an option.... Look for places to stay in between Iraklion and Agios Nikolaos (maybe avoiding Hersonissisos and Malia- very over developed) Lovley beaches, walks etc also for history and days out youll have the Palace of Knossos, Iraklion archeological museum and creteaquarium and various water parks within bus distance... Buses on Crete are very good ... Google KTEL Crete xx

There is a great Facebook based Single Parents Travel Club. No fees just a place to arrange holidays with other like minded single parents. Information here: www.facebook.com/sptravelclub/

We have had several happy holidays in this group and made friends!

Salou or Cambrils. Nice short flight. Nice places to walk or go on a bike ride. Fabulous beaches and you have Portaventura. We came back last week very family orientated.

Near by to Tarragona and Barcelona for historic sites.
