Guaranteed sun in April

Hi

Looking at holidays for Easter 2020. Don't want to go long haul so where can we go April 2/3rd with two dcs 5,7 where it will be hot and the swimming pools won't be freezing cold? We made the mistake of going to koz a couple of years ago and it was windy and the pool was freezing.

I have been to the Canaries in April several times. It's usually warm and sunny but the sea is cold and pools are cold unless heated. Plenty do have heated pools though.
Anywhere further North than that is not going to be hot in April.

We made the mistake of going to koz a couple of years ago and it was windy and the pool was freezing. So often on these threads people who want a summer sunshine type holiday are mistaken in believing that places like Spain and Greece have year round hot weather. They don't. It can be nice in spring but you can easily have a cold week.

Thanks hortz- where did you stay?

I think unless you go long haul you will have problems finding a guaranteed hot weather and a pool to swim in. Friends have a time share via her in-laws in Gran Canaria and even they had less ideal aka bikini and pool weather during the Easter break.

We did long haul twice over the Easter holidays and it was worth the extra money to ensure we got the weather we wanted.

How about Cape Verde?

CottonSock · 01/06/2019 13:03

Canaries pretty much.
We did south Spain (nerja) this year as Easter was late. There was some rain but mostly nice. But pools freezing. Took the risk as flights 1grand cheaper.

I've just come back from the Canaries ( mid May) and it was hot so imagine it would be ok in April ! Known as a year round destination

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 03/06/2019 18:39

We go to Lanzarote at the end of march early April most years and the weather is always pleasant 23/24 ish. We book a villa with a heated pool so no issues with swimming.

Thanks for the suggestions. Mmm they look like they are 21 degrees to me at that temperature it's not worth it. It could be that hot in the UK, that's not very hot to me.

I was talking to a friend who's just got back from Marbella- anyone been there at the beginning of April?

QforCucumber · 05/06/2019 11:02

Marbella is mainland Spain and will be cooler,

We went to Tenerife 3 weeks ago and it was cloudy and cooler a few of the days, clear days max temp was around 24/25 degrees.

Look at a map. Marbella is much further North than the Canaries (or Kos for that matter).

CottonSock · 05/06/2019 15:12

I went to Costa del sol late April. Some wind and showers (it was warmer in the UK some days!). But it was pleasant. Flights 600 vs 1500 to canaries.

namechangedforanon · 06/06/2019 00:13

Qforcucumber lol I was there 2 weeks ago and the week started off cloudy and the last 4 were mainly scorching ! 🤣

Canaries are further South - much further south - but are small islands in the Atlantic. So they're generally warmer but the winds can be cooler. Southern Europe isn't that much further south than England, but benefits from being a continental landmass. So if it's a warm spring across Europe then southern Europe will be warmer than England. Generally.

There's no guarantee either way really. If you want a proper consistent temperature, go to the equator. If you want guaranteed sunshine, go further south still.

That said, the canaries are more consistent. They generally have warmer temperatures and no massive seasonal demarcation. And it really doesn't rain much.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 06/06/2019 00:39

Also, it might be 21 in the canaries now but it's the middle of the frigging night.
Tomorrow is forecast as 24/25. That's considerably hotter than the UK this week.

QforCucumber · 06/06/2019 09:08

@namechangedforanon haha, typical, we did notice as we were leaving that the forecast was due to clear up!

mummyrocks1 · 06/06/2019 22:17

Thanks for advice. Currently looking at Tenerife and making sure the hotel has heated pools

CoolShoeshine · 19/06/2019 22:43

Been to Lanzarote in April and the forecast was about 19 degrees max each day but in reality it was sunny and hot, our villa thermometer always said 26-7 during the day. Same happened in the Alps one summer. I think maybe the forecast perhaps has to average out sunny and shady areas and high and low ground or something similar, so the actual temperatures by the pool or on the beach are brought down by cooler temperatures elsewhere on the island. Lanzarote’s lovely btw.
