Flybe cabin bags

Has anyone flown with Flybe recently and taken on a cabin bag? I've not flown for over 20 years so it's new to me.
We bought 2 of the smallest cabin size bags I could find. I searched and searched as they were all 40cm wide.
But we found 2 that I thought were small enough. But just measured and they are a couple of cm wider.
Do they really check? We are flying from Southend. Just me and my 10 year old, to Rennes.
I don't know whether to chance it or not. £100 fine either way is a lot of money.

What is the full size of your bag?
They class a standard bag as 55cm x 35cm x 20cm including wheels and handles.

You can sometimes hit it lucky where they won't be too thorough. Other times they will place it in the bag measurement device and then you get hit with fees.

Depending on the overall weight of your bags it may be less hassle (and slightly cheaper) to just check it in as hold luggage.

Also be aware that if the flight is busy they may automatically put it in the hold as there literally isn't enough room for it in the cabin. This happened to us last summer - we were not charged for this.

Ryanair have changed their baggage rules recently. You need to check on their website.

icanbewhatiwant · 28/05/2019 18:34

Yes I've seen all those details thanks. Mine are about 38cm wide.
I couldn't find any cabin bags smaller. We have other cabin bags that are 40cm wide, lots in the shops were also 40cm wide. All being sold as cabin bags. But most airlines they are 40cm width. Flybe are smaller.
I was just asking how strict they are. I have heard there's a cage to put them in to measure. But not at all airports.

They’re pretty lax I’ve found, I fly with them quite often. If you can shove it in the thing it’s fine (or just say you’ve checked and they’ll let you on anyway).

icanbewhatiwant · 28/05/2019 18:36

The fine is £40 so 2 of us that's £80 each way is £160 quite a fine.
Or do I just try squeeze it into a slightly bigger case and pay £98 online to put in hold? I really don't know.

Yes they check and I had to pay £40 at the gate to check it in as it didn’t go in the tiny cage. And the plane was only half full with empty lockers. Rip off. They let people with soft bags through even if the bag didn’t fit the cage as they said they could squish in the locker easily.

SunnySomer · 28/05/2019 18:41

I have a friend in an ongoing online feud with Flybe about exactly this: they changed the rules while he was away so a bag that had been accepted on the outward journey was refused on the way back. They seem to be real sticklers.

Sidge · 28/05/2019 18:41

Flew with them very recently. They were extremely strict at both airports. Man behind me got charged £50 to put it in the hold as his wheels were sticking out of the cage. He hadn’t been charged flying over.

I had a soft rucksack type bag and had no problems.

AuntieMarys · 28/05/2019 18:45

We had to buy new cabin sized cases. And yes they check and make you pay. 3 people on our flight were charged last month

AuntieMarys · 28/05/2019 18:46

I got mine in TK Maxx

Most of the airlines have changed their permitted sizes in recent years as we were all obviously buying bags in a certain size which was doing them out of money.

icanbewhatiwant · 28/05/2019 19:09

Thanks for replies. Ours are the hard shell type so they don't squish in. It is only the hard handle at the side that sticks out more than the 35cm.
I just saw the Argos link. I couldn't find any smaller when we looked. A bit cheaper than ours at £40 each. No time to get now as leaving tomorrow.

Just book into the hold and save the stress

I’ve had a minor obsession with finding a compliant cabin bag for FlyBe and I’ve bought from Amazon

Cabin Max Bergen Cabin Luggage 55x40x20-44 Litre Carry on Luggage Perfect for Flybe Flights

(Sorry link not creating properly on my phone)

It’s soft and as long as not overfull it meets the size requirements.

PalindromicUser · 28/05/2019 19:27

I have previously flown and got away with it. A few weeks ago I flew twice in quick succession and they were checking every single bag. Don’t risk it.

The overhead lockers on the planes that fly their domestic routes are very shallow compared to long-haul planes, hence the restrictive size limits.

nameequality · 28/05/2019 19:29

So strangely the name on Amazon given above gives larger dimensions than it actually is which is super misleading.

The actual bag is

“DIMENSIONS - cabin bag; 55x35x20 Capacity; 38 litre - makes the Bergen on of the most versatile cabin luggage on the market today! Perfect sizing for hand luggage specifications with Flybe flights and the vast majority of airlines.”

icanbewhatiwant · 28/05/2019 19:38

Yes most are 40cm wide. I took a tape measure. I included the wheels and thought mine fine. But didn't include side handle. The top handle goes inside the case.

I flew with them last week and they were really strict. Checked at both airports.

I wouldn't risk it, if nothing else it will just stress you out?

Debenhams do bags in that exact size for £30ish.. cheaper than the fine!!

Aragog · 28/05/2019 19:47

Flew with them on Saturday, internal to Newquay.
Our cases are within the guidelines. However they didn't check at all on the way out here.

ELM8 · 28/05/2019 19:47

This is the one I got. It was in the sale.. it fitted both times when they checked.. was so glad I got it as I very nearly chanced it. As a previous poster said the overhead lockers are tight. On the plus side you can take a handbag as well Smile

I had the thing with the size changing within a week. Doubly distressing as I was flying to my dad’s funeral having gone out the week before when he died with no problems. Mine was the IKEA family small wheeled bag and they are proper militant about it fitting in the cage at the check in desk. I flew from Southampton in case that’s where you are going from. Other airports (the one I left from) much less sticklerish. Good luck.

rookiemere · 28/05/2019 19:58

Do not risk it with Flybe. We got stung with £40 baggage charge for a bag we have used with them a number of times before. I swear that the things you squeeze them into at the airport to check are smaller than the stated dimensions.

rookiemere · 28/05/2019 19:59

Yes saint it was Southampton we flew from as well.

Tiredmum100 · 28/05/2019 20:01

I have just flown this weekend with flybe. Yes they check your bag. I literally had to push my bag into the metal box at the check in desk as it had pockets in the front. My mum bought a small suitcase from B&M which fits in really easy. They also weighed them. I flew Cardiff to Edinburgh. Cardiff were stricter with the weight.
