Help! Sick on holiday

freakingout87 · 28/05/2019 15:51

Help! We are 5 days into a holiday abroad and due to fly home on Thursday. My oh has today been struck down with diarrhoea and vomiting. As awful as it sounds I'm hoping it's too much sun or something he ate rather than a contagious bug that I could pick up too!

We are in a hotel in each other's pockets, small bathroom, no cleaning products and obviously been in close contact so I'm terrified I will pick it up right before we're due to fly (obviously concerned about him too but if he gets it out of his system now he should be ok to travel by then). I'm a massive germophobe and literally despise sickness bugs, I don't know what to do.

Try not to panic too much. We were abroad recently flying home Sunday. On the Thursday morning our son was sick for around 6 hours on the hour and some bouts of diarrhoea. We were sharing a room and bathroom. The following morning I felt unwell but wasn’t sick. Neither DH nor DD became unwell.
I asked the cleaner for some bleach.

Mrsjayy · 28/05/2019 15:55

Hopefully it passes soon can you go to a shop ans buy some antibac spray and maybe some diarolyte for him what a rubbish end to your holiday I woild buy some immodium too

freakingout87 · 28/05/2019 16:04

I know I'm gutted but also freaking out because I am a terrible traveller at the best of times and being sick or needing a loo in those circumstances is my worst nightmare. Will try and get hold of some anti bac spray for the bathroom

Could be food poisoning??

purplecorkheart · 28/05/2019 16:24

Go to a nearby pharmacy. You should be able to get him sonething for both. Make sure he stays hydrated. You could always pick up some hand sanitiser.

I am sure a nearby supermarket with have antibacterial spray, wipes

freakingout87 · 28/05/2019 16:28

I managed to get some bleach and anti bac handwipes but there isn't much around here. The local supermarket doesn't seem to have any sort of medication and don't know where a pharmacy is. I have paracetamol and immodium with us but I don't want him to take immoodium just yet in case he needs to flush it all out. Will clean the bathroom but I'm pretty sure if it's a viral bug I will already be doomed as we've been sharing bottles towels and bodily fluids all week!!!!

We were meant to be having a lovely romantic meal tonight and now he's laid in bed and I'm alone on the balcony. Hate being poorly but hate it even more when I'm not in my home surroundings :(

Mrsjayy · 28/05/2019 16:47

Aww no can you ask a Rep or at receptio n where there is a pharmacy also lemonade is good for the sickness. You will have that feeling of dread waiting on something to happen

freakingout87 · 28/05/2019 16:57

Yeah that's exactly it. It's awful being poorly but if I get it before or during when we are travelling (think transfers and long flights etc) I don't know how I'll manage. Might not even be allowed to travel. I'm getting ahead of myself but I just feel these sort of bugs are so contagious 😷

No idea what else I can do other than wait. I'm sure he will be feeling a bit better tomorrow as these things don't tend to last more than a day or so.

Ok so have bleached the toilet after every episode. Bleached sink and shower too. Wiping handles, flush, taps. Am using hand gel and making dp use it too.

Anything else I can do to self preserve?! Dp hasn't had any episodes in the last few hours so fingers crossed the worst is over.

Posting for reassurance and because I'm bored and lonely 😂

OP posts:
nocoolnamesleft · 28/05/2019 19:57

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before using the hand gel. For a lot of the viral bugs, soap and water is actually more reliable, so don't miss out that step.

PCBananaHammock · 28/05/2019 20:04

As @nocoolnamesleft says, many d and v bugs are immune to the hand gel, and the best thing to do is literally wash any germs on your hands down the sink. Plenty of water, soap, and rinsing. Then the hand gel.

PCBananaHammock · 28/05/2019 20:08

Also, as horrible as the worrying is (and I know as I'm an emetophobe), if you're going to get ill, you're going to get ill. Truly I don't mean to sound unsympathetic, I've been where you are in terms of worrying many times over and I know how awful it is. The bottom line is, if you do get ill, and can't travel, what's the worst that can happen? I know it would be inconvenient, and possible costly, but you will come out the other side and you will both be fine. Fingers crossed for you that's it doesn't happen though, it sounds like you're doing everything you can. Hope it's all ok for you both x

freakingout87 · 28/05/2019 20:11

I think I'm more worried about getting ill while travelling. The potential for sickness and diarrhoea on a claustrophobic plane with one toilet is literally one of my worse nightmares but I do suffer with ibs and travelling worries at the best of times - ie even when I'm in perfect health! You are right, if it's going to happen it's going to happen but just hope it doesn't happen at a catastrophic moment.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 28/05/2019 20:14

Have you got insurance details to hand incase either of you need it? I hope you don't.

Does he want you to stay around him? If he's sleeping, you could wonder off to find a pharmacy and get some food.

freakingout87 · 28/05/2019 20:18

I had a little wander earlier and popped to the shop for a snack and some supplies. Funnily enough I don't feel like eating 🙈
We do have insurance but also have kids and dogs awaiting our return (trust us to be ill on our first adult holiday in forever) so really hope it doesn't come to that.
I know some airlines are funny about letting you travel if you're ill and tbh if I was in the state he was today I don't think I could do it anyway...not without taking a shit load of immodium first

Hand washing is your biggest thing here, I'm Emetophobic so this has been well researched Grin

If it is a virus the only way to catch it is to ingest particles of V or D, so you would need to be right next to him while he is being ill and breathe it in or you touch something that is contaminated and put your hands in your mouth.

Forget about the anti bac gel as PPs have said that will do nothing for a virus. Thorough hand washing, bleach clean everywhere he is ill if you can ask for fresh towels as it can spray onto things, sorry TMI, flat coke is a great anti nauseant for him if he can sip it.

I really feel for you nothing worse than falling ill on holiday.

Also it could be some kind of Food Poisoning too.

freakingout87 · 28/05/2019 20:34

I don't think it's food poisoning as I think that strikes pretty quickly and he's barely eaten today - could have been a bug on something he's ingested though I guess. Am really trying to be careful but it's tricky in unfamiliar surroundings with no cleaning cupboard at my disposal. I have bleach and anti bac wipes though and cleaners come in daily so hopefully we're not too germy!

Isadora2007 · 29/05/2019 08:28

I hope you’re all well today Flowers

freakingout87 · 29/05/2019 09:56

Thank you :) dp is very weak but hasn't had any more episodes of D and V. I am still paranoid that it's still on the way for me but I don't feel too bad right now. We travel tomorrow so fingers crossed I can avoid it.

I was wondering, a pp said that the only way to get a viral bug is by inhaling/ingesting the bug particles but online it says that people can be contagious before symptoms even occur so if I was sharing drinks and kisses etc with dp the day before he got ill am I still at risk from getting it or is it mostly contagious once the sickness begins?

OP posts:
UncomfortableSilence · 29/05/2019 13:53

It's mainly contagious once symptoms start it can be caught a couple of days before symptoms start via poo basically so as long as you wash your hands after using the toilet it should be ok.

Gingervitis · 29/05/2019 14:12

Fellow emetophobe here UncomfortableSilence - I'd high five, but I don't like to touch other people haha!

I came here to relay all of the info I have gleaned over the years about cross contamination and microbiology, and how to stay as safe as possible but I see a PP has already done so.

Best of luck OP, but if you are as phobic as we are I expect you've spent a lot of time hand washing so I'm sure you'll be fine. Positive thoughts...sending best wishes to your DP as well, hope he is feeling much better and your trip home is uneventful.

Incidentally, my DSD was very unwell right after she had visited us one evening, and I fretted and went around bleaching everything...but all was fine.

UncomfortableSilence · 29/05/2019 14:16

Ginger No offence I don't touch people either Grin

freakingout87 · 29/05/2019 15:07

Thanks ladies, hugs all round...or not 😂

Yep have been hand washing and must have rinsed my toothbrush for about 5 minutes before using it this morning. Dp is weak but a lot better. I am hoping I've avoided it but won't fully relax until we are home. I know how quickly these things can come on.

OP posts:
PCBananaHammock · 30/05/2019 10:46

How are you both today? Hope you get home ok x

freakingout87 · 30/05/2019 18:32

Still waiting to travel but fingers crossed all ok so far. Dp hasn't eaten properly for days and I haven't had a lot of appetite either. Flight leaves at midnight so here's hoping it goes uneventfully
