Devon at the end of September

I live overseas and am back in the uk in the autumn for a visit. Me and my twins who are young teenagers. Our first mission is in Cornwall where my parents used to live before they died. We are going to visit some of their favourite places and I have accommodation sorted. After a night near Heathrow we will be heading down and we have a couple of nights where I have booked nothing yet. I'd like us to stay in Devon for a couple of nights but not sure where as I don't know it well at all. I want to stay in somewhere old - where we live live there is nothing really old. Maybe a lovely old B and B, maybe a pub. I am torn between finding a place in Dartmoor, like a village inn a bit off the beaten track and doing some walking, poking around villages, a trip into Exeter. Or heading into South Devon, maybe near Kingsbridge and going to Slapton Sands, Beesands, Burgh Island. Or something else entirely. My kids will be interested in old buildings, towns, churches. They also will enjoy traditional pub food. They would really like to see some proper countryside creatures - fox, badgers, robins, squirrels. They like walking, but not too much. I just want to give them an introduction to England at its best before we head south. We are hitting London and some big midlands cities catching up with friends later in the trip, so this part is all about the countryside! Anyone know Devon who can help?

Croyde is lovely. Fab beach and nice pubs for food

DH DS & I went to Burgh Island last year - utterly lovely. Walks to be had and the sea tractor is just a very funny and lovely thing. Lovely evening meal ( but fairly dressed up ) - other than that pub on beach for food and certainly fish & chips available. I would recommend it - very atmospheric. If I can find the name of the old hotel we stayed in on the way down I will post it.

Totnes is fabulous and Dartmouth. I'm an ex Paignton girl myself . Now I'm homesick!

Chagford on Dartmoor has a fantastic pub/inn, Three Crowns. It's a beautiful village. I'd also recommend Topsham (on the Exe estuary, very old, lots of Dutch style old buildings). Salcombe is lovely in the South Hams, very old and pretty but gets busy. Totnes is great, very hippy. You could find a nice Airbnb in any of those places.

Ooh have a look at the Landmark Trust, they have some incredible places to rent!

I'm from Devon, so I never actually stay in places but I can show you some good old stuff in West Devon...

All 3 do excellent traditional food. All are about a 30 - 40 minute drive from Exeter. And all are within walking distance of the moor.

The Oxenham Arms, South Zeal This is about as old as it gets tbh. And South Zeal is a proper quaint village. (I hate describing places as quaint!)

The Castle Inn, Lydford Also old. Also lovely.

Fox and Hounds, Lydford I have a real soft spot for this one, although its advertising isn't quite up to the same standard as the other 2. The owner is great, and you can walk up a track behind the pub straight onto the moor.

Oh and if you go into Exeter, take the kids to the underground passages. I haven't been since I was a kid (when I thought they were amazing) and am now desperate to go again myself Smile

I'll be thinking about this all evening now, so don't be surprised if I come back with more suggestions later on!

We stayed in some yurts on an Orchard in Devon between areas. Yurts were lovely - own bathroom and kitchen plus a pizza oven. Was called the Orchard Retreat. Only 3 yurts on the whole site (which we had to ourselves).

Recommended in vogue don't you know? Also not expensive at all!

Don't know whether you are thinking of a caravan, but we stayed in a caravan in the west country one September. It was fine during the day, but at night it got surprisingly cold and clammy.

I live in Devon and highly recommend Salcombe, Topsham and the neighbouring villages of Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers.
