We're thinking of doing the ferry to france this summer - one week in Cornwall then over to Brittany for a week. However i am a terrible sailor and get badly seasick. Is this crossing much rougher than other routes or not? Anyone done it with small children to entertain for 6 hours or is this madness...??

We did it with a 6 month old last year. Didn’t find it particularly rough and noticed there were bits to do for small children - cinema, games room, generally charging around the corridors!

The night time crossing is great if you get a cabin.!

chipsandgin · 27/05/2019 22:56

Can be pretty rough - we eventually found amazing anti-sickness pills (Stugeron) though & now it’s bearable - the ferries are big enough & if you can pay for a (usually reduced cost) day cabin to the watch films & relax it’s doable. I did many feeling sick as a dog but it’s far better now!

It’s no worse than any other crossing I’ve done. I mean it does depend on the conditions like even in summer there can be storms. And it’s one of the longer routes across. But overall it’s not that bad. It was a regular holiday when I was a kid live in the southwest so nearest port. They often have onboard entertainment especially in the holidays m. Think kids entertainer quiz and a movie. Tbh once
You’ve got on board set up a base somewhere, got something to eat, had a wonder round the boat and checked out what’s going on time soon flies.!
Pont Avon is the main boat and is bigger I know that can make a difference with sea sickness sometimes
L’amorique is the other one - but quite frankly just as good and it’s the one we prefer to go on

pastaparadise · 27/05/2019 23:08

Thanks. There's only a night sailing one way sadly, otherwise I'd hope to sleep right through... Might be worth the risk but I throw up on most boats though...

therlodger thanks for that. The Pont Avon hardly seems to be sailing so we'd have to go on L'amorique so that's good to know. Ive avoided channel ferries since some traumatic sickly journeys as a child so have no knowledge!

No worries if you want any more info just ask. Whether it’s about the crossing or Brittany itself. Although don’t have young dcs so don’t know how much help I’d be

chipsandgin · 27/05/2019 23:34

Honestly try the Stugeron
anti-nausea pills - an absolute game changer for me (& I’m terrified of boats - the only downside being now I’m not being sick I can think about that more - large G&T or 5 usually helps though!).

LakeFlyPie · 27/05/2019 23:39

I also found cinnarazine v effective. Highly recommend it (unlike the acupressure bands which were completely ineffective and made my hands go numb)

GeorgiaTrotmansParachute · 27/05/2019 23:50

It can be quite rough - have been on it when it was pretty lumpy, confined to cabins and even the hardy sailors in our party were green.

It's a long crossing if you're feeling grotty.

pastaparadise · 28/05/2019 00:58

Thanks all. Looked up cinnarazine which looks like drug name for Stugeron. I've tried it in the past and it just made me thirsty and didnt work, but maybe gp could give me a prescription dose...?

Georgia that sounds rough. I've never been in such rough seas to be confined to a cabin and still have probably 50% plus vomit rate on boat jouneys... I would rather not go but dh and dc are keen...

if you are thinking of doing this in the school summer holidays then your first issue is going to be finding spaces. it is a long crossing and can be rough. we have done it several times and its been mixed so it just depends really. Had you thought about taking the car over on the chunnel. i have done this a couple of times and it was a very good journey though can be expensive.
