Resort Credit

Looking to book an AI to Mexico. Could someone explain resort credit to me please? This will be a once in a lifetime trip for my family so we don't want to be unexpectedly hit with extra costs. I'm aware of environmental tax but really don't want to spend anything once there bar tipping.

I don't know what that is. Whenever we went AI we wore a wrist band to show we were entitled to the food/ drink/ services.

Every other destination we have been to is wrist band only. We omit been to Mexico before so I want to be clear over resort credit as we won't be able to afford any nasty surprises!

Where are you going in Mexico?

holidayplace.co.uk/blogs/posts/112013/trick-or-treat-resort-credits-demystified sounds like you need to do some maths to work out if it's a good deal

DottieLottie1 · 26/05/2019 21:45

Thanks @dementedpixie, sounds like something we won't use...

So my understanding is that resort credit is like a discount to use against services outside of AI- excursions, spa treatments and upgrades etc. As long as we don't use the credits and stay within the normal AI package we shouldn't face any unexpected charges. Is this right? I will probably walk into a high street travel agent and ask before booking.

It's the other way round - resort credit is money you can only spend in resort on things like spa treatments and a la carte meals. You'd only pay extra if you spend more than the 'credit' on these things. But you won't get it back if you don't spend it by the time you leave.

dementedpixie · 27/05/2019 07:22

The link I posted says you may have to pay a tax on any resort credits you use so they are not free.

DottieLottie1 · 27/05/2019 07:37

From what I can make out and from reading @dementedpixie link you are often limited to how much credit you can use on a service. So for example you May only be allowed to use up to $50 RC against a $100 massage- therefore you have to pay the additional $50 and possibly 20% resort tax.

I may have this wrong but think we will avoid using them.

There's so much to do in Mexico you should budget for days out, you can't use resort credit for that but you will miss so much if you stay in the hotel.
Resort credit you can use fir spa treatments, special wine that's not included etc

DottieLottie1 · 27/05/2019 16:27

Thanks @Hollowvictory, we don't normally stay in the hotel only and do like to get out and about. So as long as we stay within what's included in normal AI we will be fine.
