Venice in July

NasiGoreng · 26/05/2019 13:34

We have 3 nights in Venice in July. Our 2 DC will be with us (10 and 13) and they are well travelled.

We will be doing the main touristy bits but would also love to go a bit off the beaten tourist trail and see some different things and eat in unknown bars and cafes.

Any hidden gems and tips for Venice in July with 2 well travelled, DC who will eat anything?

Torcello- ruins of Byzantine Venice; and a v nice restaurant.

Venice will be seething in July, so try to do things early or late before the day trips have arrived or after they have left

Worth taking the vaporetto to Murano, Burano and Torcello.

We also did a candlelight classical concert in one of churches which was magical but pre kids.

We had a fab day over on the Lido. Hired bikes and cycled the whole island (flat 👍!) and had lunch at the Art Deco airport which was lovely. Also can swim in the sea from there so the dc's might like it. We had 3 days and spent 2 in Venice and one on the Lido escaping the crowds.

Take loads of mosquito repellent and anti-histimines. I’ve just come back from Venice and had the most mosquito bites, and the worst reaction to them, I’ve ever had in my life.

I went last July. Very hot but loved it.
Go to the islands of Murano and Burano.
Enjoy the pistachio ice cream.
When you got to the Grand Canal, you can take a water bus one stop (can't remember the line number at present) and get off at a little island opposite, go into the church and ask to climb the tower, you will get beautiful views.

I agree about a day on Lido. Great for cycling/getting space and very friendly, reasonable restaurants on the main Street.

Venice will be awful in July. We went in early August and it was vile. Sorry.

Blisteringly hot, probably smelly and seething with hordes of people. If any of you are asthmatic, pack inhalers and be prepared - all the diesel off the cruise ships is an issue bitter experience

I'd suggest get out to the lagoon islands of Burano and Torcello.

Murano is also really busy and packed with glass that's made in China.

It's the Biennale this year and if you are looking for hidden gems, going in the Pavillions is fun even if you think everything in them is bonkers.

Also book everything you want to do in advance - queues for Doge's Palace, San Marco etc are long and not shaded.

I just stayed at this place www.palazzosoderini.it/
In a palazzo on a lovely quite square, big family rooms - there is a garden and they provide an abundant breakfast - would recommend

ComeBackBarack · 05/06/2019 16:06

Get wondering away from the main squares there's lots of bits that are quieter and away from the crowds. Get up early, siesta, and then go out later. Poke your head in random churches - they are pretty much all stunning.

The islands are lovely and quieter.

Eat away from the main squares.

It's not helpful as you've booked already but would agree it will be mad & not in July. I like the Jewish ghetto - the history of it is really interesting & worth reading up on before hand if you visit it. If you do the main sights day one, I'd recommend just getting lost off the beaten path & you'll find things you wouldn't have done otherwise. Burano is nice, Murano less so unless you have a particular thing for over priced glass! Another option is a day trip to Verona - it's about one hour 20 on the train (book in advance on Trenitalia, it's cheaper), less heaving than Venice & beautiful in its own way

Mad & hot not mad & not!
