Taking our 7 year old ds to Spain for the first time and was just wondering what others pack in their hand luggage.
He will definitely need something to keep him occupied so, tablet, magazines etc.
Anything else?

Thanks in advance.

Change of clothes in case spillage or they are sick, blanket in case they get cold. Pencils/pens & paper! Lollipops always keep a child quiet!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/05/2019 13:45

We have 1 bag of flight stuff... Books, tablets, passports, phone, snacks, spare clothes, wipes etc. Which goes under the seat in front.

Other hand luggage is stuff for the holiday.

Don't forget headphones for the tablet.

Icedlatte · 25/05/2019 13:47

Box of tic tacs - keeps them busy for ages!

dementedpixie · 25/05/2019 13:49

Snacks. We always take sweets, tablet, battery pack, etc

parpsqueak · 25/05/2019 13:52

as little as possible.

Ipad
headphones
comfort toy thing
definitely nothing with lots of bits as you spend half the flight picking stuff up off the floor.

and an adult has a rucksack with the important stuff in it.

dementedpixie · 25/05/2019 13:54

We all take a backpack as hand luggage so the kids carry their own crap

LeonoraFlorence · 25/05/2019 14:02

For DDs in their hand luggage we take change of clothes, snacks, iPad/headphones, blanket, comforters, sticker book/colouring book, small toys such as doll, pencils, water, milk and cup (depending on which DD!). Used to take so much more but having 5 now, I’ve had to cut down Blush. Being honest we travel lots and rely on iPads, comforter, blanket and snacks. Screen time is limited normally so it works well on a flight to keep them occupied. I take the wipes/tissues/hand sanitizer/Calpol etc.

Hecateh · 25/05/2019 14:35

Some form of wet wipes and clean your lap tables before you use them. I remember reading they are absolutely germ ridden and have always cleaned mine ever since

ILiveInSalemsLot · 25/05/2019 14:40

Similar to others -
tablet,
headphones,
book,
activity/puzzle book,
pens,
snacks and a sandwich if there are no meals on the flight and dc is likely to get hungry.

reluctantbrit · 25/05/2019 15:29

DD has her phone (or iPod before it became a phone), headphones, 2-3 teddies, kindle, iPad, paperback, pens and notebook, some snacks.

We have a similar set up in our backpacks plus all documents, passports, keys etc.

FannyFeatures · 25/05/2019 15:35

My two are 6 and 9. They pack their own hand luggage with whatever they want and I just do a quick check for liquids and electronics. Those bags are for when we’re at our destination so they go straight into the overhead lockers. I pack a magazine, snack, small toy and tablet each into my own hand luggage to keep them occupied on the actual flight.

Zigzag99 · 25/05/2019 15:47

Thanks everyone, these are great. Does anyone take medication in their own hand luggage for their dc's such as Calpol just in case?
Thanks.

@ThomasRichard, they are 6 and 9 and do this themselves!
Just curious what do they usually pack in their hand luggage?

delilahbucket · 25/05/2019 15:54

At that age, toys/books etc, headphones if taking a device, snacks, small tube of suncream if landing during the day as well as hat/sunglasses, favourite cuddly toy, ds always gets to buy a magazine before we go, spare t-shirt, and I leave space to stick in the light jacket or hoody he travels in.

dementedpixie · 25/05/2019 15:58

Will they really need calpol on a short flight? Remember it would need to be in a bottle under 100 mls and be able to fit into a clear plastic bag max size 20x20cm. Or you could take the calpol melts which are in tablet form

greenlynx · 25/05/2019 15:59

I always take melting tablets Calpol.

reluctantbrit · 25/05/2019 16:13

We never took medication like Calpol in the handluggage, it was in the hold.

But I normally have normal ibuprofen in my handbag and DD is a) old enough to take tablets and b) was trained from 6 years to swallow tablets (total liquid refuser for a long-term medication, after 2 days she was a pro in taking them). I think 1 200mg ibuprofen is the same as 2 spoonful Nurofen.

No idea how it works with Paracetemol and Calpol though.

nc100 · 25/05/2019 16:14

Calpol is in 100ml bottle. So it's fine.

Wipes, magazine, iPad/phone, headphones, snacks, drink, colouring

dementedpixie · 25/05/2019 16:19

But is it really necessary to take a bottle of calpol in your hand luggage?

Otter46 · 25/05/2019 16:22

DS is 4, he has a backpack. One a recent one hour flight he had books and some snacks plus a little game from Tiger with a wind up car. We’re going on a 3-4 hr flight soon, I’ve got him some books on an iPad (kindle app), he can watch some CBeebies and snacks. It wouldn’t cross my mind to take a change of clothes at his age!

Otter46 · 25/05/2019 16:23

Ps or calpol etc. What are the chances of them getting a sudden temp on a short plane ride. Maybe for a teething baby yes...

JurassicGirl · 25/05/2019 16:26

We put:

1 simple set of clothes: hoodie, pants, swimming shorts, shorts, t-shirt & hat.

Snacks like crisps, biscuits, sweets etc

Magazine, comic, puzzle book with a small filled pencil case.

Favourite cuddly toy, fidget toy (spinner/twister)

I tend to keep a few calpol sachets in my hand luggage just in case.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/05/2019 16:26

Change of clothes is for travel sickness or spilled drinks.

dementedpixie · 25/05/2019 16:31

I never take a change of clothes either
