First Holiday abroad

Wondering what kind of age people tend to take their littlest ones for first trip abroad...

My wife is floating the idea of heading to Italy for a week, and our 6 month old, who we have just started weening had his passport arrive yesterday, so I think she's serious...

Any words of wisdom about travelling with an infant, do people find it an enjoyable experience, do the kids get anything out of it... or would it be better to wait till he can appreciate it more ?

I don't think your 6 month old will get much out of it, but imo that's not a reason not to go. Both my dcs were born overseas so we did a lot of travelling from a young age. We found renting a house or apartment was much easier than a hotel as more space and dc can still have afternoon nap. We took dd to Italy when she was about 5 months - having her in the baby bjorn carrier was easier than a pushchair as pavements were quite narrow.

Personally I’m not waiting for a child to really get something out of it for a holiday! We did a summer holiday to the south of France when DD was 10 weeks and went skiing when she was 7 months, both trips were great. My top tip would be to get a suite, villa or apartment- you need somewhere to hang out once the baby has gone to bed!

It is not a problem, they are fairly transportable at that age.

Unless you expect to lay at a beach for hours you should be fine.

We took always a back carrier plus the pram, did self catering and eating out instead of a hotel, we personally find it easier.

DD definitely loved going places like we did in the UK, it was just a nicer climate and no housework/work for us.

Its not just about the baby. Its about you and your wife. She obviously wants to get away. So ask her what she wants to do and where to go and take it from there.
Talk about what you both want from a holiday and the budget. Then go on holiday with the baby.
