Travel insurance recommendations

Can anybody recommend a reliable travel insurance company that does not cost a fortune for a week in europe. Been on the usual comparison sites and I'm going boggle eyed with it all, trying to read all the policy conditions etc, as there are so many to choose from and a lot of them I haven't heard of before.
Hopefully won't ever have to claim but I don't want to just pick the cheapest and find out they are rubbish.
Any advice appreciated.

Don't know of any myself, OP, but giving this a little bump for you in case someone else is around who does.

Whichever policy you go with make sure that they pay outright and you don't have to pay yourself and then claim a refund.
Make sure the medical cover would get you home if needed too.

Go for a 5 star defaqto rating
You don't need more than £10 million medical
Choose a reasonable excess (I normally go £50-£75)

I just got a week in Europe for £7 and that's with 3 health conditions disclosed

I find MoneySavingsExpert is a good starting point for holiday insurance.

Thanks. I have been on the comparison sites but its reading through all the policy terms and conditions that's the difficult part - the list of exclusions seems to be extensive! One of them specified the amount of alcohol that you could drink!
I guess you never know how good they are unless you have to make a claim.

I've just been away to Australia and ended up hospitalised and missing flights home etc. Cost about £8000. Insurance was absolutely amazing, they paid the medical bills directly to the hospital and rebooked new flights for both myself and my partner. Very kind and compassionate too which was a nice (unexpected) bonus. They made everything as easy as they could for us.

HSBC Premier - you'd have to google as I got it free due to being a premier customer but sure it's open to everyone.

Good luck!

I use a comparison site (Travelsupermkt) via a cashback site, as you get about 22% cashback on the policy you buy. I sort the comparison by Defaqto rating and pick the cheapest 5 star rated one.

I also looked at Which? Best Buys to see who they recommend. Some policies will just be rebranded eg I once got Virgin Travel Insurance which was actually provided by Insureandgo but at the time getting it via Virgin was significantly cheaper than via Insureandgo even though the policy was identical!

Thanks everyone.
Unicorn I actually have HSBC insurance so that's reassuring. Dd not covered though so need it for her.

@Whodeenie I was the only one that had HSBC premier insurance and my boyfriend was covered for free with my policy as we live together so might be worth checking for your DD.

I've already checked unicorn and she's not covered. I've just gone for one off the list with 5* defacto and good reviews on trustpilot.
