Thomas Cook flight only - insurance question

Stupidly we recently booked TC flights only on a debit card. Kicking myself now for not using a credit card!

We have an annual travel policy but I’m worried we won’t be covered if TC goes bust- I’ll call them on Monday.

I was wondering if it would be worth getting an additional policy that covers in case of airline collapse or am I too late now?

I’ve got accommodation booked separately although I’ve not paid for it yet I can only get a full refund if I cancel at least 30 days before.

What to do? It’s July we’re flying so only 7 weeks away.

Similar here. We booked separate TC flights but using a credit card. I'm fairly sure travel insurance will also cover us if they go under. Have you checked your policy?

Notsureabouthis · 18/05/2019 16:29

I’ve had a look at the policy but it’s not mentioned at all- as an inclusion or exclusion! I’ll go back and double check.

Are they not abta/atol protected ....I always thought that meant if they go bust you get your money back?

Not for flights only unfortunately Confused

In the event of insolvency you can request a chargeback on your debit card, but in future use a credit card for the s75 joint liability clause.

This Martin Lewis link re. Monarch Collapse has some useful snippets.

Following here. I’m unsure what to do as their flights are so good at the moment am unsure whether it is worth the risk or not.

Similar happened to me. Was able to get a charge back on the payment within the week and book another!

Another company that could be brought down because of chines whispers

I've seen TC post on social media over the weekend saying they are absolutely fine despite media speculation.

"I was wondering if it would be worth getting an additional policy that covers in case of airline collapse or am I too late now?"

It's almost certainly too late. Companies will not insure you for something that is already known IYSWIM - in the same way you cannot get insurance for strikes after the strike ballot has been callled.

That Thomas Cook has made a statement saying that it is fine, may or may not be enough to make it insurable now.

This is why it's important to check your insurance, and if it needs additions do them on the day you make the booking.
