Anyone know Washington DC?

Dh has just booked the Westin in downtown DC for a few nights at tge end of July. It looks pretty central, but neither of us has been before - 1400 M Street, NW, Washington. We can cancel up to two weeks before, but if anyone can recommend a better location, I'd love any ideas. It our first time away without our dc and we can afford a bit of a treat but delighted to get a bargain too (like the Westin is).

We stayed there. I think it’s a great location and a great choice. Underground station not far away, and Georgetown for restaurants nearby too. It’s excellent in my view and better than where we stayed the first time we went. That’s why I chose it for the second time!

Many of Washington’s attractions are along The Mall so as long as you can access this area by underground, you are fine. It’s a brilliant city - have fun!

We just came back from staying at the Capital Hilton. You can see the White House when you step our into the street. Fifteen minutes lovely walk past the White House to the Mall. Excellent breakfast, lovely staff. Quite old school, but I like that. I like staying really centrally in cities as it's lovely to eat supper and top home across the road. The Regis is next door which is lovely but we could only afford a drink at the bar!

Georgetown is classy! Jacqueline Kennedy lived there after JFK was killed. Central (The Mall?) isn’t everything in Washington as it’s miles long! What is central? We visited it in sections.

We're flying in to DC in a couple of weeks and I've booked the Capitol Hill Hotel for the first few days and AKA White House for the last few days. They both get great reviews although AKA White House is more expensive but it is an apartment with a full kitchen for when we're bored of eating out! AKA White House took payment straight away whereas Capitol Hill Hotel is more flexible.

I can't wait!

Both of those are close to The Mall. One nearer The Capitol and one nearer The White House. Not really sure what the advantage is when you are staying in roughly the same area. The transport system is good. You don’t need to move accommodation.

Bananajam

I would also say there is no real need to move accommodation either.
AKA White House is a bit more centrally located overall.

Would recommend visiting the Newseum, the International Spy Museum and the NASM.

And if you happen to like hot dogs you must visit Bens Chili Bowl near U Street station!.

We're travelling from DC to Atlanta, Chattanooga and possibly Nashville and are then coming back to DC before flying home hence two hotels. I know they're both similar areas. We have tickets for the US Capitol Visitor Centre and I'm really looking forward to the museums.

Thanks folks, I've had a look at a few more places based on your suggestions and found a gorgeous one in Georgetown so we'll definitely have a nice place to stay.

Anyone recommend where to go for dinner? Only there three nights, one is for a big birthday, so somewhere extravagant but not too stuffy would be ideal.

Thanks for being my personal trip advisors Wink

Fiola Mare, Rose’s Luxury or Central Michel Richard. The Lonely Planet Guide has plenty of other recommendations.

Fogo de Chao is a Brazilian steakhouse and is also very good.

Also, there are 15 Michelin starred restaurants in Washington - 12 with 1 star, 2 with 2 stars and 1 with 3 stars. The Michelin Guide is also a very reliable guide to restaurants and describes exactly what you might get. Personal views might not be exactly what you want. We find Michelin reliable. Bib Gourmand recommendations work for us too.

For a special birthday try Le Diplomat.
