Road trip from Rome to Naples along the Amalfi coast

Hi there
We're thinking of flying to Rome and then hiring a motorhome and driving along the Amalfi coast. Our kids are 8 and 11.
Has anyone done this?
Thanks in advance.

Isn't the Amalfi coast south of Naples?

Redtartanshoes · 06/05/2019 21:50

What time of year?

SpiritInTheNight · 06/05/2019 21:54

The roads along the Amalfi coast are really narrow, it isn’t much fun the in summer in a car as there are hundreds of coaches and motorhomes clogging the roads up, and parking can be tricky

octonoughtcake3 · 06/05/2019 21:55

Train would be easier. Naples to sorrento is a beautiful train journey

AdaColeman · 06/05/2019 21:57

Are you experienced at driving a motor home? The coast road south of Naples is busy and demanding.

HollowTalk · 06/05/2019 21:58

I would be terrified of driving that route! I went on a bus and thought I would die of fright.

Naturenurture · 07/05/2019 07:07

Ah so that answers that! We really want a bit of an adventure this summer rather than a fly and flop Confused

We drove that route in a fiat 500 and it was absolutely terrifying. No way would I be doing it in a motor home!!

AdaColeman · 07/05/2019 14:39

Just a few thoughts about the Amalfi trip...It is a beautiful area, but unless your children are really interested in Roman history, there's not much aimed at children, only a few beaches for instance. It's more a holiday for adults who love fancy restaurants.

But if you wanted an adventure, have you considered a journey to Orkney and Shetland with Northlink Ferries? You could do a route from Aberdeen >Lerwick>Kirkwall>Stromness>Scrabster.

Loads of stunning beaches, lots of sea journey excitement, Vikings...

Where ever you go, have a super holiday!

AdaColeman · 07/05/2019 14:43

Sorry that Lerwick has been unintentionally scored through, I must have been over enthusiastic in my use of - --!!!!

dreichuplands · 07/05/2019 17:15

Maybe Sardinia, some of the roads are a little interesting but not all of them. It has an unusual interior as well as a stunning coastline. There are ruins, beaches and towns.

Redtartanshoes · 07/05/2019 17:56

How about fly into Barcelona and do south coast of France?

flitwit99 · 07/05/2019 18:00

Driving around Naples and the Amalfi coast is terrifying. But maybe you're much braver than me. You could get a train? Train from Rome to Naples, then the train goes right to Sorrento. You could stop off as often as you wanted. Night in Naples, night in Ercolano, night in Sorrento...

But just because I'm a big chicken with Italian driving doesn't mean you have to be.

Singlenotsingle · 07/05/2019 18:01

I did a package, fly in to Naples then transfer to Sorrento by coach. Agree with others, is terrifying. The front of the vehicle goes right out over the cliff edge. I comforted myself by saying at least the coach driver is experienced, but your DH wouldn't be. Take the train.

thefuriousfuggler · 07/05/2019 18:42

Driving in Italy is horrendous. Don't, just don't..........and if you happen to notice that you can get a ferry from Rome to Barcelona and think "oooh, that sounds like a lovely trip" give yourself the MN head wobble at least 10 times and then have a re-think. Planes and trains are your friend. Cars and ferries are most definitely not.

TheresWaldo · 08/05/2019 12:27

No no no! I feel even thinking about it.

Naturenurture · 08/05/2019 14:50

Ha ha OK message received :-)
