Walking holiday / Hiking trails

Does anyone have any favourite locations for a walking holiday?

A few years ago I did the Queen Charlotte Track in NZ, staying in homestays. I didn't have to carry my luggage/equipment, I didn't need to struggle with map reading. There were no tents involved!

But apart from NZ, I don't know of any similar trails with accommodation / luggage transfer organised...does anyone know of any?
Doesn't need to be in the UK/Europe, I'm happy to travel!

West Highland Way in Scotland. You can book b&bs for every stop, we used a company so we didn’t even need to find them, just decided how many days and what places we wanted to stop. And there is a luggage service which will deliver to your b&b or, in some spots, to a central location.

Stunning scenery and good walking, with the option of detours to walk up a mountain as well if you fancy it.

Atlas Mountains in Morocco..... use Fleewinter if you are in the UK.

Camino in Spain

sunshineyweather · 05/05/2019 17:52

oooh, thank you both!
I should have remembered the West Highland Way - I've done parts of it before.
I love the idea of Morocco! Unfortunately I am not in the UK, so I'll need to do the planning myself...Have you been beachyhead? Any recommendations?

It was amazing. We booked through Fleewinter (who I don't work for Smile), did a two day, one way walk, not up Mount Toubkal, but up to a mountain hotel overnight, then on up to 3000m. Finished off with a very nice stay in a posh hotel for one night then into Marrakesh for two nights.
The trekking base is at Imlil, where we met our guide and donkey man who took our bags and went ahead to cook lunch etc.
It really wasn't expensive and we didn't cover a vast distance, but the culture, being cut off for a couple of days and views were incredible.
The stars from the mountain lodge were the most amazing I have ever seen.....

Pennine way, coast to coast I'm England, Camino de Santiago in Spain (technically a pilgrimage but most people are just walking it)

BarbaraofSevillle · 06/05/2019 06:59

The Camino Santiago is very long and a lot of it isn't particularly interesting, it's all about the pilgrimage.

How far do you want to walk? I want to do the Gozo coastal path which can be done in 4 relatively short days, and while it is a very small island there's plenty of interest to fill a week or so and you can always go on a boat trip to Comino and the Blue Lagoon and spend time on Malta too.

The small size of the island also means that you can stay in the main town in the centre and get the bus or a taxi to the start and finish each day and not worry about luggage transfers.

NicoAndTheNiners · 06/05/2019 07:20

Coast to coast. Plenty of companies do luggage transfers and organise b&bs.

Finfintytint · 06/05/2019 07:29

Offa’s Dyke. Many companies will organise accommodation, etc.

MinnieMountain · 06/05/2019 07:34

Pembrokeshire coast path.

Could you stay in one place and do lots of walks from it? I'm spending this coming weekend in the Hope Valley in Derbyshire which works well for that.

feliciabirthgiver · 06/05/2019 08:01

Cinque Terre in Italy provides great hiking between the 5 villages (also all accessible by train).

sansou · 06/05/2019 12:05

My ILS have gone on multiple walking holidays with Inntravel which makes it all so much easier, especially with the luggage transfer.

beachyhead, I am sold! I love stargazing.

Thanks to all the other suggestions. Barbara, I don't need to walk far, it's more about giving my trip a purpose/activity.
I'm researching all the others. Haven't been to Gozo; I think it would be really fun to go all the way around the island.
I've heard fab things about Cinque Terre, although it might be super busy in summer time?

ParkingIInPlainSight · 06/05/2019 13:09

Headwater do some grit walking holidays too. I loved the picos de europa.

beachyhead · 06/05/2019 14:09

This year we are going to the north of Greece, near the Albanian border to walk the Vikos Gorge. This is a family holiday, so less walking and more looking around, but I'm sure that bit of country will have excellent hiking trails....

buttermilkwaffles · 06/05/2019 14:43

Macs Adventure do self-guided walking holidays all over the world, including baggage transfer.
www.macsadventure.com

I have never used them as I prefer to do my own thing rather than be restricted to a set itinerary and also for cost reasons, but if you want a walking holiday where everything is done for you except the walking, then they look like a good option?

In general, depending on what type of walking you like doing, good areas in Europe would be:
French Alps
Ecrins
Queyras
Pyrenees
Pico's de Europa Spain
Italian Dolomites
Swiss Alps
Austria
Bavarian Alps Germany
Slovenian Alps
Tatra mountains
Transylvania
Anaga Tenerife
La Gomera.

For inspiration, dear h for Cicerone walking guides on Amazon and download the free sample of the Kindle version of any places that appeal, as the samples usually include the introduction, one or two walks and some photos it should give you enough of a flavour...

buttermilkwaffles · 06/05/2019 14:44

dear h should be search Smile

sunshineyweather · 09/05/2019 08:29

Again, thanks for all the further suggestions! That list is fantastic buttermilkwaffles.

Ideally I want to venture away from Europe; at least away from Western Europe. So the Morocco suggestion is very appealing.
A lot of the trips I've looked at are for a full week, so I'm trying to find some shorter ones as I'm trying to minimise work days off.

That fleewinter itinerary looks ideal! I have contacted them to see what they say.

Thanks so much! Keep any other ideas coming though, for future trips :)

I hiked the Julian Alps in Slovenia with Macs Adventures. It's Eastern Europe, so does that count? Most incredible holiday of my life.

5foot5 · 09/05/2019 16:54

We walked in Slovenia last year with an Inntravel self-guided itinerary. I am a big fan of Inntravel actually. Slovenia is lovely BTW.
