We went in August as we wanted to do 3 weeks and it was the only time we could fit 3 weeks in. It's very hot and humid and rained a lot in the afternoons but we just planned round this and did early mornings/evenings in the parks.

We booked directly with disney, stayed in one of their hotels with their free dining offer and booked flights separately.

Have a look at thedibb.co.uk there's a forum on there with everything you'd ever need to know about a Florida holiday.

SpinMill · 02/05/2019 21:11

Although if you've any specific questions I'm happy to help where I can.

Musicalstatues · 02/05/2019 21:13

If you’re going in August make it as close to the middle/end of the month as you can. US schools go back mid August so the parks quieten down a little.
Be prepared for humidity as you’ve never known it before. We go there a lot but have only been once in August - you basically drip with sweat the second you step outside! You do get used to it but it’s hard work!
Also second the advice to look at the Dibb. It’s the Florida bible.

feduuup · 03/05/2019 19:12

If you want to stay on site have a look around now as their free dining plan is out. We were going to book direct but found a travel agent who was cheaper, only booked tickets, hotel and dining thus far, will add flights later.

ILoveMyNewRing · 03/05/2019 20:54

Decide if you want to stay “on property” (Disney hotel) or another hotel, or a villa.

We always go for a villa because I prefer the space, but people who stay on property and do Disney dining plan always rave about it.

What else do you want to do there? Universal, Busch gardens? Kennedy space centre? SeaWorld?

If going to Universal it’s worthwhile staying at one of their higher tier hotels for the express passes as well as early park opening.

almostsunny · 04/05/2019 00:15

Thanks for the info

We think we would prefer to stay on site and we just want to do the 6 Disney parks and a couple of days at universal

I am really worried the weather will be terrible in August?

Terrible in what way? It will be hot and humid and you will sweat buckets. Rain is luck of the draw - often storms in Florida mean a concentrated deluge in the afternoon that generally stops pretty quickly. Sometimes it lasts longer. When we went in August 2017 it was fairly dry, we spent 3 weeks there and only got rained on a few times. There’s no reliable way to predict it. It is hurricane season.

If you can’t cope with heat you will struggle. As I said before we’ve been multiple times at different times of the year and August blew us away with how much hotter and more humid it was. We were glad to have 3 weeks so we could take it a bit slower. Cooling towels, spray fans, make sure you book yourselves some sit down meals so you’re out of the heat. Go to the parks early, go back to the hotel in the middle of the day then out again late afternoon. Loads of tips to manage it but it will be baking hot for sure.

Musicalstatues · 04/05/2019 11:48

Also your 5 year old will need a pushchair!!

ILoveMyNewRing · 04/05/2019 11:50

I assumed you’d already decided about August. No, i wouldn’t go to Florida in August- the parks are really busy and the heat and humidity are extreme. A friend said she was tipping cups of ice water over her son in the queues to make it bearable. If you have the chance to go at another time, I would.

BlueEyedBengal · 04/05/2019 11:54

I want to go to Florida next year, if the summer holidays August are not the best time to go then what other school holidays would be?

TokyoSushi · 04/05/2019 11:55

We used to live there (we worked at Disney) the weather definitely isn't awful in August. Yes its boiling hot and it does pour with rain about 4pm, but it's hot rain, it dries up really quickly and you just have to plan around it. I'd have no hesitation in going in August if you can take the heat!

Shodan · 04/05/2019 12:01

Every time I've been has been in August and I struggle a lot with the heat, but the only time it was truly unbearable was the time we went nearer the beginning of August. The last couple of weeks of the summer holidays is totally bearable, so long as you don't try and rush around everything.

As a PP said, it will be hot and humid but there are usually lovely cooling rain showers in the afternoon (although admittedly there have been a few out and out thunderstorms too, which meant closures in the water parks). Also Disney is very well set up for the weather- you can go from air-conditioned building to cool mist stations to air-conditioned building etc to get around the parks.

We've done all sorts of accommodation options too- villa with own transport, villa with shuttle busses, onsite accommodation with dining plan. Out of them all I preferred the onsite option- very relaxed, busses everywhere, lots of food options (although I sorely missed plain cooked veg by the end! Grin), but expensive in comparison.

I didn't much care for having our own car tbh- walking to and from the car parks, paying the daily charge etc. And it was a sweatbox at the end of every day- ok if someone will get in and turn on the aircon before you get in though! But you do have the freedom to go out and about then.

This year we're staying in a four bed villa offsite and planning to get Ubers/taxi/Lyft in and out of the parks (bit of a gamble, but are resolved to hiring a car if necessary).

If you want the villa option, I'd recommend HomeAway. Look for flights and villa in December this year- that's when the prices are usually lowest ( although prices were silly high this year, and I got lucky by booking at 1 am in November). Track the prices of the flights from September onwards.

Papergirl1968 · 04/05/2019 12:14

We went in August a few years ago and it wasn't as bad as I'd feared in terms of weather or queues. I dont like extreme heat, and while it was hot, it wasn't as humid as I'd expected. We got a few late afternoon downpours, not every day.

Musicalstatues · 04/05/2019 12:21

If you go as close to the end of August as you can the crowd levels are fine because the Americans schools go back half way through the month ( for Disney - its never actually quiet!)
When we went, we went as late as we possibly could - our eldest had to go back to school the day after we got home. Made it slightly cheaper as well, coming back in September.

feduuup · 04/05/2019 12:38

I've never used a push chair for a 5 year old, we did 33,000 steps one day with our 4 year old and still did not need to resort to a push chair!!!

Musicalstatues · 04/05/2019 13:23

Yours must be made of sterner stuff than mine then. The heat and the long days wipe them out and we’ve found it’s far easier all round to use a buggy.

WelshMoth · 26/05/2019 21:07

Some really helpful stuff here. Thanks!

KitKat1985 · 26/05/2019 21:16

As others have said, August will be hot and humid, so be prepared for that.

There are advantages of staying on-site. You can book 3 fast-passes a day 60 days in advance if you stay in a Disney hotel (you can have 3 fast-passes as well if you stay off site but can only book 30 days in advance). This basically means you can skip the queues for 3 rides / attractions each day.

It's worth also thinking about if there are any particular restaurants or character meals you want to do. You can book these 180 days in advance if you stay on site and some of them you need to book early. The Disney website tells you the details of all the restaurants available.
