Eating in Norway

Holiday booked in summer. Flying to Oslo, travelling to Flam and Voss and then on to Bergen. V excited obvs. But also really worried about cost of living. We keep hearing about how expensive Norway is.
Does anyone have any tips about how to keep food costs down? Recommendations for cheap supermarkets etc? TIA Flowers

My only advice is take lots of money!! It’s very expensive!! And drink is off the scale!! But its so breathtakingly stunning, I went about ten years ago as my husband was working in Bergen and we had a wonderful holiday there after his contract had finished!!

It’s horrendously expensive- I found it significantly more expensive than Stockholm.
We actually took snacks from London that we bought at the airport.
Also there are street stalls with are more reasonably priced by the harbour.
Other than that stock up if you’re getting a free breakkie and don’t drink!

Thank you! We're now thinking of what food stuff we can put in our luggage!

It is expensive but it’s a holiday so it is good to budget to eat out a bit!

Hotel breakfasts are great - we made sandwiches and there were always hard boiled eggs which are great snacks. We managed this in Oslo, Flåm and Bergen.

In Oslo - just for example - we had pizza out. Adult pizzas were around £15 each and kids were £9. If you avoid too many drinks and puddings it’s manageable. We had pasta at an Italian place on the harbour in Bergen and that was similar prices.

In Flåm there are limited eating out options so you might just have to suck up an expensive meal. There is a small supermarket there so we picked up snacks and fruit for our onward journey. We were only briefly in Voss but it’s bigger than Flåm so am sure it must have a supermarket.

I enjoyed this blog, and found it very helpful for cost-cutting.

If you're buying alcohol, pick it up at Oslo airport when you arrive - much cheaper than supermarkets.

You're most welcome, Fritata! I enjoyed it, too.

I want to say that before I went to Scandinavia, I had zero interest in going; it was my husband and son's idea. (I was always ready to return to France or Italy.)

Once I started doing research, I warmed to the idea, though, and that blog helped quite a bit.

Then we went, and oh.my.word! I want to return!!

I hope you have a splendid time.

I go to Oslo for a log weekend about twice a year.
Yes it is very expensive by UK standards but t is so worth it.
I dont normally drink when I go by myself. However I took DP once and we did have a few drinks and it was cheaper to drink in the hotel than at the Hard Rock. ( however there was a great band on so it was ( just about) worth the €26 a round for 2 drinks!!
Have a great time in Norway!
