Cheapest European city break???

itslikeblackpoolilluminations · 30/04/2019 13:59

My best friend and I have been friends for ten years now and after a rocky year in both of our personal lives she booked us both a weekend away to Berlin- a city I had always wanted to visit. It was a birthday present for me and she wouldn't accept a penny from me, she really is the best friend I could wish for!
We had the best time and arrived home yesterday, and since then I've been thinking what I can do to say thank you.
She has been in a well paid job for a while whereas I have been a student and will soon be going into work, so really I'm just finding my feet and have a fair bit of debt to pay back before I can start saving properly.
I thought about maybe taking us out for a nice meal when I get paid, but that doesn't seem enough. She's made clear that I don't owe her anything, but it would be nice to take her away somewhere as well, to return the favour.
Does anyone have any cheap ideas for breaks we could take? Obviously just Europe with cheap flights and hotels. Or any other tips about how to book a cheap break???

Bulgaria is nice and very cheap compared to much of Europe - budget airlines fly there too.

FreeFreesia · 30/04/2019 14:08

Just back from 3 nights in Mallorca. Flights, decent 4* hotel & half-board £200 each booked as a package from lastminute.com

Cheaper option would be to stay in UK, consider a break in Liverpool or Newcastle? Lots to see & do in both.

redhotchill · 30/04/2019 14:08

Whereabouts in the country are you and what would your budget be?

mrsm43s · 30/04/2019 14:11

Prague or Budapest are both fairly cheap to get to (budget airlines) and for accomodation/food once out there. Both great cities to visit too.

pearldeodorant · 30/04/2019 14:13

Look up BA late deals. You honestly won't find a cheaper deal. Can do Prague for two nights for £120...includes flights and hotel, sometimes breakfast.

Prague, Amsterdam, Krakow, Budapest are some of their cheapest deals or at least they were when I looked a few days ago!

itslikeblackpoolilluminations · 30/04/2019 14:22

Oooh all of this info is fab, thank you so much!! I should that I'm very lucky to live 15 mins from Manchester Airport! I'm going to have a look at those BA deals because I haven't heard of that before

Lisbon is gorgeous and cheap as chips once you're there.

redhotchill · 30/04/2019 14:33

Have a look at formby hall. Roughly 180 quid for room, breakfast, evening meal, spa with a treatment. Take a bottle for the room

redhotchill · 30/04/2019 14:34

For 2 people

pearldeodorant · 30/04/2019 14:43

Ah BA deals only fly from London! I think! Sorry I forgot to mention that. But otherwise they're fab :)

Depends when you go and where from. Use Skyscanner with destination as everywhere to find cheapest routes for the days you want to go, use Google flights for price tracking and up to date prices.
Sign up to Secret Flying UK departures email mailing list for bargain alerts.

Cheapest cities in Western Europe are probably Porto and Lisbon.

Elsewhere, Poland (eg Krakow) is cheap for accommodation and eating out. I would guess Budapest would be too (have never been). Bulgaria is cheap, but Sofia perhaps not particularly appealing, Plovdiv maybe an option.

If you go in the shoulder season (May/June and September/October) you get cheaper accommodation, smaller crowds and still a good chance of decent weather.

Off season is even cheaper but less chance of good weather, although that's arguably less important for a city break.

Shoulder season you can get apartments in many cities for about £20 per person per night for 2 people.
Usually a better deal than hotels and you can self- cater to cut costs.

If you want to eat out, then make a lunch your main meal (as it's much cheaper than dinner) and then you only need a light dinner and can self-cater breakfast and dinners without doing much or any cooking. Or picnic and bottle of wine for sunset if weather is good.

Try Airbnb and also Booking dot com but try and book direct as commission charge is 15 to 20% at booking (charged to the provider not you, but obviously they have to factor that cost into their pricing).

Was in Budapest recently,I didn't think it was cheap at all. Krakow and Prague were much better value and lovely locations.

wobytide · 30/04/2019 16:02

Whilst Amsterdam may be cheap to fly to it isn't cheap to eat or drink in the centre compared to the likes of Prague/Budapest etc. Stick to the central European old cities

Osquito · 30/04/2019 17:01

Use weekend.com - you put in the departure airport, maximum spend, and it gives you all the weekends you can have!
I have also used travelzoo for lovely breaks in the UK (with the warm weather we’re having, make the most of it) and it’s saved on some lux glamping for us.

Linguaphile · 01/05/2019 08:17

Lisbon and Milan are both cheap to fly with loads to see and do!

BarbaraofSevillle · 01/05/2019 09:43

You can get to Lisbon on Ryanair and TAP from Manchester and it's a great city and cheap when you're there and you can get the train to nearby coastal resorts.

Or you could get the train to somewhere like London or Edinburgh and have a great time there instead. Or even a day or overnight somewhere nearer if you want to avoid the costs of flights. It's the company, the food, drinking, gossip and laughing that makes the weekend, not necessarily the travel. I'll assume you've been to Liverpool loads, but how about York, Leeds? Or a spa break at the Woodland Spa in Burnley, which is amazing.

jarviscockatiel · 01/05/2019 21:22

I went to Sofia in Bulgaria last year and it was lovely, really recommend it as a place and it was cheap too. Also Belgrade was cheap and nice, although we went about 15 years ago and prices may have gone up since.
Another way of saving money in many places you travel to is to book free walking tours. These cost nothing except for a tip should you wish to leave one. This means that you usually get tour guides who really do their best to give their tourists a decent tour and it can still work out cheaper for you.

Lithuania. Vilnius is a really cheap city for eating and drinking and is compact enough to walk to most places. I loved it there

Swiftier · 10/05/2019 20:11

Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius - lovely cities but avoid mid-summer when there can be lots of stag and hen parties.

professionalnomad · 15/05/2019 13:50

Come to Istanbul!
Direct flights from Manchester with Pegasus (the no-frills airline of Turkey) have just started.

Bucharest is wonderful - the Paris of the East.

I also love Tallinn and my absolute favourite European city - Sarajevo. It's fabulous.

Please does anyone have any website suggestions?

If you want a cheap long weekend away in say September, but don't mind where you go?

We've been to all the main cities: Berlin, Prague, Budapest, Krakow etc.

I just want website suggestions, of how to get a variety of cheap options, where you don't need to enter your destination, it will make lots of suggestions?

Oblomov19 · 23/06/2019 16:55

Skyscanner.net allows you to search, any destination, cheapest, once you put in possible dates.

Any other website suggestions please?
