Biking holiday to see the dutch tulip fields?

How easy would it be to pan a 2/3 day biking holiday in the Netherlands?

Are there cheap B&Bs? or hostels?

We both have electric bikes - so have a fairly good range without hills

Working out the routes scares me - but we are too broke to go on a guided bike holiday

Could we go my the Eurostar? or would that be difficult with bikes?

I haven't a clue!

Holland has miles and miles of cycle paths so shouldn’t be a problem. You can get the harwich to hook ferry. You can easily cycle to Rotterdam or The Hague. There are some cheaper places to stay out of town check out the hotel websites or air b&b. Or dunrell is a lovely campsite you can stay at. Or maybe on the train upto Amsterdam.

That's what I thought - I'm finding out if I need anything other than an ordinary adapter plug to charge our batteries

We will probably go on the Eurostar if we can take our bikes as we have a subsidy - but apparently the bikes will cost more than our tickets!

We may have a rethink

I have cycled around Holland.

We got the ferry from Hull and just set off and made it up as we went along.

Stayed in air bnbs so only carried stuff like clothes and tools rather than camping equipment.

There are miles of cycle paths and it's all pretty straight forward.

I enjoyed it but to be honest got a bit bored of it being so flat after a while!

oh and we didn't book anything in advance. Just sort of cycled til we'd had enough then searched online for somewhere to stay. There was always loads of places and this was in July so peak season.

sounds really good

I think I may need to wait until I have a bit more spare cash tho'

One major tip having been to Amsterdam in tulip season. Make sure you go before the fields get cut. They start getting cut mid/late April so I'd go early to mid April. By the start of May you are lucky to see but a few. From experience.

Cycling in Holland is an absolute dream. It is so easy. We did it, hired bikes there though do we could get ones with trailers for all our baggage. We stayed in holiday parks, Landal the company is called. They are like a low key Center Parks.

Nothing to add except I read the title as “bikini holiday to see tulips” I was a bit errrm okay who would do that?! 👙🤪. I really should put my glasses on!

KatyMac · 08/05/2019 12:39

I don't think that would look very acceptable.....and it would be quite breezy

Cycling in Holland is really easy- cycle paths everywhere, and very flat (unless you're cycling uphill to get to the beach... Which I find a bit disconcerting).

Most Dutch people speak English well, especially younger people. From my experience I've had no trouble asking for help/advice/directions, and found people helpful. I will say that Dutch is a very "direct" language, so if people seem rude/brusque in English they probably aren't being rude at all, it's just cultural difference.

There are also plenty of places to leave your bike in town centres etc, so you can climb windmills do other touristy bits on your way through.

Museums etc are quite pricey though.

The smaller towns can be very pretty, Delft is definitely worth a visit and Leiden's nice too.
At least half a day in Rotterdam is well worth it if you have the time... Interesting, modern architecture and a huge street food market inside a really cool building.
Theres a pretty windmill place near Rotterdam (Kinder Dyke?) That's all historic and picturesque, if that's your bag.
