Hi, we are currently on a city break in Krakow with our DD and having a family vote over dinner as to what big ticket destination to go to next.

DD has suggested Costa Rica - she has champagne tastes but a cola wallet😊😉.

We would certainly be happy to listen to wise Mumsnetters who have visited here.. both good and bad experiences please.

I haven't been there but if you are on Instagram follow the body coach, he is travelling round there for a month. It looks amazing and he has lots of good tips.

Went there two summers ago and was amazing - perfect for older kids. Lots of rainforest, wild animals like sloths, monkeys, racoons, coati, pelican, gecko, toucan etc, ziplining, active volcanoes, hot springs etc. We went with TUI on AI package to RUI Guanacaste. More expensive than Europe but good value for longhaul.

We went last year, one of my DC's favourite holidays. Lots of action, nature/wildlife, mountains, jungles and coast. The only thing we didn't get much of was culture. It was hot and at times humid as rains came very early.

Internal costs very similar to US, so expensive compared to its neighbours.
Very safe. We hired a pickup truck for the week.

My dcs will turn 16 and 18 respectively next February and I would love to take them to Costa Rica. Penguin did you rate Guanacaste? Is it easy to do jungle expeditions, ziplining etc or was it more resort based? Also, we would have maximum 10 days - is it too ambitious?
Forgive me Se7ven for the hijack.

went about 4 years ago with kids 11 and 15 . brilliant holiday. we went on the Caribbean coast (much more grungy, yoga-retreaty, ganga-y). natural beaches, rough seas, incredible rainforest.

hired rusty bikes and cycled to monzanilla beach where we paid a local to take us out dolphin watching in his boat for $100 and he took us to panama mangrove forests too.

kayaking down the waterways looking for Jaguar, watching the monkeys and sloths, creatures everywhere, night time rainforest trek.

spent time at Tortuega too - seeing the turtles and sea fishing. took a 6 seater plane back to San Jose ($400 dollars for all 4 of us and spectacular flying over the jungle with lightnng crashing either side of us).

just amazing. it's wasn't a 'luxury' holiday but amazing experience (I think you can get the manicured beach posh stuff on pacific coast - that's where all the american cruise ships come in - so we avoided!) . We booked all of ours separately and we spent £10k all in for 2 weeks. expensive but one of the best holidays ever.

don't go if you don't like spiders and insects as they are everywhere. trillions of them.

we stayed in a tree house place on the coast and Tortuega lodge - booked through hotels.com and airbnb I think.

do it!

Pink We flew into Liberia airport (nicer area than San Jose) and hotel was on Pacific Coast. Pacific Coast is where most of hotels are based and more developed for tourism though still largely rainforest / wildlife volcanoes etc.

We did one day at hotel, one day tour you can do whatever you prefer. Hotel AI including kayaks, windsurfing, SUP and flights with TUI was £6,300 for 4 of us for 2 weeks in August. At hotel there's a pool, beach, rainforest, entertainment at night, kayaks, SUP and windsurfing. There are activities like beach volleyball but they are quite low key. At hotel food was amazing, entertainment was OK, beach more an activity beach - not sunbathing but we don't do that - some volcanic ash on beach. Rainforest sounds hotel so lots of wildlife around - we used to eat at their steakhouse every night which is included in AI and waiter service, massive steaks - about 16oz even for 10 year old child. 5 raccoons would visit there a lot as they liked steak - this seemed to send many of the US tourists screaming and climbing on chairs but we loved them and they are quite timid creatures. Was a family with 3 babies. Also saw coati, gecko and pelican there and if you walk down beach there are monkeys in trees.

The hotel is on the lively side so not for anyone after a quiet break, its a mix between families and party people. Lovely hotel and facilities and food and would go back as good value and loved wildlife but were some drinking games going on - could avoid these. We did 5 excursions out - about 6 tour operators are in hotel and there's also a local company GeckoTico Tours on the beach. Trips are roughly £100 per person but full on activities - with TUI its a coach of 50 people, when we went with Nexus it was 10 people, with GeckoTico it was just us 4. GeckoTico was the best. There's about 20 tours, a lot are going to places 2 hours away, a few to places 4 hours away.

Next door to hotel is Diamante - that has a 60mph zipline from several hundred metres in the air going down to the ocean and a wildlife park. The wildlife we had all seen in the wild but my 10 and 11 year old both loved that zipline. Trip we did with GeckoTico Tours just 4 of us was to see sloths in rainforest on Caribbean coast, that was amazing, about 2 hours each way. Another trip through Nexus was Blue River, seeing botantical gardens and rainforest and waterfalls. Through TUI we did Buena Vista (2 hours away) though would go via GeckoTico - this was a waterslide through jungle then ziplining through jungle (about 30 metres in air so same height as trees and saw monkeys and toucan there), then horseriding then hot springs - excellent. Did Arenal with TUI to see volcano and hot springs - great and got history etc but 4 hours each way was a bit far for kids though good scenery on way.

You can also hire a car though coach drove through a few rivers and no signposts in a lot of places and some dirt tracks / herds of farm animals in middle of road so we were advised against. Not many people anywhere we went - tended to just be who was on tour, Buena Vista a few tours. Weather was around 27C though some rainstorms after 4pm as rainy season - we loved those though seeing rainforest with lots of rain. Would strongly recommend. Think with 5 tours we spend about £8,300 in 2 weeks for hotel, flights, all food and drink, all activities and one of best holidays we have had.

We did a tour from coast to coast, small group with a fantastic guide who showed us things we would never have seen on our own. Started in San Jose (nothing to write home about) then Tortuega, Arsenal, Monteverde, a couple of places I don’t remember the names of and finishing in Guanacaste. I much preferred the Caribbean side to the more developed Pacific side.
In retrospect it would be fine to drive, we drove from Guanacaste to San Jose at the end, but we would not have packed as much in. There is a huge focus on tourism, everybody speaks English, accommodation was all good, even the huts where a cockroach fell on my head!

We are going in 3 weeks. I am really looking forward to it!

We have kept prices down by hiring our own car to get about and booking some of the accommodation via airbnb.

We are doing 2 nights near San Jose, 5 nights in Arenal and 5 nights near Manuel Antonio national park. There are loads of activities Whig look amazing - animal sanctuaries, zip lining, snorkling, hiking and so on.

Tulemar in Manuel Antonio was wonderful (if it a bit pricey!). It’s spread across hectares of rainforest and has its own beach, 4 pools & an on site sloth institute. Really special place - we went for our 10th wedding anniversary. We used a driver through a company to take us around. Loved CR! A friend of mine has just been to Guanacaste. While it did look beautiful, it didn’t look from her pictures as green as where we were. Didn’t do the Caribbean side - some Americans we met had just come from there & felt it wasn’t as nice as the Pacific side but that was just their opinion!

Thinking about doing this in December (alone) as ds os off to aus with his dad. I’d love to go but am torn between biking a hotel and chilling out with the occasional trip and booking an organised tour, meeting folk and seeing the country. Anyone any advice?

((Apologies for the hijack)))

When we went to Guanacaste it was very green but was in August so mid rainy season, now is the end of a 6 month or so dry season so wont be as green if you say visit at Easter.

We only briefly visited Caribbean side, I didn't really have a preference between two sides but type of hotels we were after were all on Pacific side. Depends what you are after really, the hotels with lots to do on resort and / or AI tend to be on Pacific side and the more Costa Rican but more basic facilities on Caribbean side though there's CR places all over. Our kids like everything on site and international food, have one ASD so he loves AI with everything in same place, at same times each day. We only stayed at RUI Guanacaste which was fine for an AI hotel with lots to do and wildlife on site, food was amazing but international mainly - think they had one CR restaurant, it was also lively so more suitable for a teenager than young child / couple seeking quiet break. Not a big fan of CR food, its OK but not a destination you go for food. Area round our hotel was quite rural rainforest and farms for miles. What type of hotel are you after and rough budget per night per room? One of our tours went to Arenal and was aa lovely hotel there but can't remember name, had lots of hot springs in - lots of nice hotels around there though suspect on the pricey side. Tripadviser CR forum maybe good place to ask.

Re trips the best ones we went on were run by Costa Ricans rather than the UK travel companies as it was smaller numbers (just us) and they knew places off the beaten track and could tell us more about Costa Rica. We prefer day at hotel day out but its personal preference really. I was with my family so can't comment on the single element and maybe if you are single a tour would be best but see what's available. We met some people who had done a TUI tour for 4 days then week in hotel and they said only 4 of them on the tour. The key places to see are a few hours apart in some cases so doing hotels in different areas could work well. If you look at the tours they tend to go to the same key areas - everywhere we saw was nice, think its only San Jose which is just OK though is you land there may still make sense for a day.

This is one we visited and was amazing but looks like prices start at £300 per night for 2 people but if you are richer than us:

We went with Exodus in a small group and it was amazing!

Having a local guide opened us up to some extra special adventures - eg seeing where locusts had been and swimming off lost beaches

I love Costa Rica. I would totally recommend Eduardo from this company for some tours. He is so passionate about his country, the wildlife and the environment and honestly just the nicest human being. We had the best time with him and it really made our holiday.

Verity I had three Costa Rican meals and would say its the worst local cuisine I have ever tasted but if you love eating black beans and rice with every meal including breakfast then its great. Not been to Poland so can't compare but this is a guide to local food:

www.tripsavvy.com/costa-rica-food-and-drink-1490803

This is what is gives for a typical breakfast:
A typical Costa Rican breakfast consists of gallo pinto (a tasty combination of rice and beans), scrambled or fried eggs, cooked plantains, tortillas and/or toast.

Mmmm rice and black beans for breakfast, tasty. Fish was good. International food was superb but can get that in London.
