Gdansk, Warsaw or Prague?

Pattinson3 · 15/04/2019 20:10

Looking for a great city break for a girlie weekend and have heard good reports about Warsaw, Gdansk and Prague.

Loved Krakow and Budapest for weekend breaks recently.

Any significant difference between them? Recommendations?

TIA

Gdansk. We were there 10 years ago (so might have changed) and it was much less touristy than the other 2.

savingmysanity · 18/04/2019 12:25

We did Gdansk in 2017, it is less touristy but is quite industrial and there is not a huge amount to do after two days or so

notacooldad · 18/04/2019 12:28

Personally I would say Prague but I've never been! It's on my list for summer
I liked Gdansk and also went to Sopot and Gdyina both a short train ride away as there isnt a great deal to do in Gdansk. Te old town is nice enough and it's nice to sit by the river and people watch.
I wasn't over keen on Warsaw. It was ok but that's about all.
My son and his gf love Prague and keep telling me to go!

AnnaMagnani · 18/04/2019 12:36

I loved Warsaw but maybe it isn't what you are looking for as a girlie weekend?

Old town and castle are stunning, lovely cafes for eating cake, loads of museums - palace in a park with gardens.

But also a lot of museums about how the place was completely obliterated by the Nazis, the Ghetto uprising, the Warsaw uprising and so on. Lots of contrasting architecture - old Warsaw, then Communist and now ultra modern.

So depending how history buff you and your friends are, Warsaw has lots to do. I preferred it to Krakow.

Thanks for all the advice everyone! Warsaw seems a bit industrial, I've head Wroclaw is the prettier city!

Prague it is!

I don't know much about girly weekends but Gdansk is great if you are interested in history (ww2 plus fairly recent history) which I am. There are good hotels, bars and restaurants but, when I went a few years ago, a noticeable lack of drunken Brits - a good sign afiak. Prague used to be interesting but is now stag party central unfortunately. I haven’t been to Warsaw.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/04/2019 12:44

Wroclaw is beautiful (and lots of history).

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/04/2019 12:46

Have you considered Ljubljana in Slovenia? It is lovely and might be more up your street.

Pattinson3 · 18/04/2019 12:48

@CaptainMyCaptain When i started my research i kept seeing more and more good reports about Wroclaw being pretty & lots to do etc, better than Warsaw but wasn't sure if it fit the bill for a Girlie weekend - nice cocktail bars, places to sit outside and people watch etc.

Great insight here guys :D

@CaptainMyCaptain What way does it fit by criteria?

Pattinson3
I think you would find nice bars and restaurants in Wroclaw. My favourite place is one that has a secret door through the wardrobe in to a room set up Cold War style with a secret printing press but maybe not what you're looking for.

Ljubljana, on the other hand, has a very sophisticated feel, definitely nice bars, great architecture and a sort of promenade along the river.

I might have come across a bit snotty about different preferences but I didn't mean to. DH and I usually go to these places with another couple in their 60s and we like the historical aspects.

Riga!

Babdoc · 18/04/2019 13:58

Prague has stunningly beautiful architecture and is full of music and history, with some excellent restaurants. The Czechs were very welcoming to tourists. I’ve been twice and loved it, but more then ten years ago, so can’t give you up to date recommendations for hotels/bars etc.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/04/2019 13:59

We're going to Riga in October and have heard good things. Very cheap apparently.

NightCzar · 18/04/2019 14:03

Prague every time. I can't think why it would be a debate. Touristy doesn't matter in a girls weekend. There are loads of bars to sit outside and easy to tick off sights within good walking distance (Wenceslas square, old town square, Charles bridge, up to castle and down via Golden lane).

wowfudge · 18/04/2019 14:06

Friends are in Prague at the moment and have said it's very busy.

Gone2far · 18/04/2019 14:50

May I throw in Zagreb as an option? We ended up there more or less by accident and loved it. It has the wonderful Museum of Broken Relationships.

hellswelshy · 22/04/2019 10:58

Prague is absolutely lovely, so much to see and lots of places to eat and drink. And perfect for wandering about, felt very safe and clean.

AGoodWench · 22/04/2019 11:03

I've been to Prague twice, twenty years ago and last year.

Perhaps it was that contrast but I don't feel like I'd choose to go back. It's just the busiest place I've been to in Europe for milling tourists.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/04/2019 11:09

Totally agree AGoodWench. It's not what it was, too busy and much more expensive.

MeganChips · 22/04/2019 11:15

I’ve been to both Prague and Gdansk.

Prague is a lovely interesting city with plenty to do and see but you may have a few stag parties.

Gdańsk is beautiful and Sopot is a nice seaside resort a short distance away. There is possibly less to do but we were with locals who took us on a tour and gave us the entire history. The whole solidarity movement is fascinating.

Personally I prefer Gdańsk because I love Poland but Prague is lovely too.

Probably not very helpful, sorry!

AGoodWench · 22/04/2019 12:34

I'd now love to visit Gdansk!
