Have been to France loads of times, but never with 1 year old.

All the milk I have ever been able to buy there is sterilised milk. Can you buy fresh milk?

Also are soft cheese like brie etc safe?

Don't want to cook all the time. Can you buy jars of baby food in France? Dd will have finger food, but still like being spoonfed best

It is possible to buy fresh milk in France. Its just not as popular with the French for some reason.

When I went with my DS who was about 13 months at the time, I stayed with friends and they had follow on milk for their DS, so I used that. It made his nappies stink, but he drank it happily.

I am pretty certain you can get jars of food, I have definitely used puréed fruit.

Cheeses are fine for a 1 year old IMO. In fact in France they feed all the different cheeses to their LOs very early on...probably why they love it so much. Your DC will probably enjoy all the different flavours, mine did and I can't keep him away from Brie now.

Have a fantastic time.

French baby food jars are lovely, especially the Bledina ones - they use lots of green veg, so there is a wider variety of tastes, and you can get Hipp organic if you want to try to stick to what you know. However, be aware that most of them do have salt in . Also, it is virtually impossible to get baby breakfast cereal that doesn't already have milk in it, so if that is an issue, take that with you.

Thanks for all your help! Can you give sterilised milk to babies? (completely clueless emoticon)

If your ds is on cows milk at home, then he should be OK on it in France. I can't see that sterilized milk is a problem - it's actually just treated at a higher temperature than pasteurised; you could always check with your hv before you go.

I've taken ds and dd to France since they were babies. Milk never a problem, if you're worried then buy some follow on formula and give dd that. Will give her iron etc anyway. I found when eating out in France they're not so hot on veg with kids meals - tended t be a choice of chips or green beans but the green beans were covered in salt!
We always tended to do BBQs and buy some frozen veg at start of hols so they always had something healthy!! Loadsa fruit!

On the milk-front - you can find non-UHT milk in most supermarkets now, certainly the bigger hypermarkets.

I think the brand is usually "Candia" and it comes in plastic bottles rather than the cartons the UHT comes in.

You can buy fresh milk, but not nearly as prevalent as UHT.

It's a long time since we dealt with this problem as the child in question is now 15, but he was around 18 months and given up breastfeeding (due to next pregnancy). I remember at the time wishing that he was on follow-on formula, because we could only get litres of UHT milk for him to have a few ounces - and it was really hard at the time to find ice to keep the rest of it cool.

I think jarred babyfoods are quite popular, although we were happy with chopped up adult foods.

Yes you can get fresh milk
it is in the cool cabinet marked "Frais" (fresh)

Entier = full cream
demi-ecreme = semi skimmed
ecreme = skimmed (can't seem to get fresh skimmed though)

excuse lack of accents can't be arsed to find them!
