Inspire me for October half term!

Totally clueless here so happy for any and all suggestions. If you were a family of two adults, a five year old and a two year old, where would you go for some sun at October half term?

Doesn’t need to be boiling hot, just ‘pleasant sitting outside’ temperature. We’d ideally fly from Cardiff or Bristol, but Birmingham could work too.

We’ve not travelled aboard as a family yet, so not even sure what would be best in terms of hotel/self catering.. getting a bit overwhelmed with options!

Open to most locations but not sure how long a flight the two year old would manage...!

To get 20+ degrees in October you need to go far south, eg Crete, Sicily perhaps Spain though only the canaries have a good sun record and storms are possible at all of them. I do recommend Sicily though I didn't travel with kids (friends did and they loved it). Check where there's flights as they are winding down by then

We always go to Menorca October half term and so far have been very lucky. I appreciate that this may not always be the case but the water is very warm at that time of year and we have always had beautiful sunny days.

I'm not convinced that anywhere that's not a long plane journey away can completely guarantee wonderful weather at that time of year. But you can guarantee it will be better than it is in the UK.

Cyprus

Lanzarote, specifically Play Blanca which is the least windy part of the island

Chilledout11 · 13/04/2019 23:13

Sicily

I’m going on a med cruise in October half term. Not expecting it to be really hot but should be ideal temperature for sightseeing in ports and hopefully warm enough to relax on sea days.

Holdingtherope · 13/04/2019 23:22

I have been Malta - ok

Morocco lovely

Bunnybigears · 13/04/2019 23:22

We did Turkey in October half term, nice and warm , in the early 20s but we did get a few thunder storms.

lovelylondonsky · 13/04/2019 23:37

We went to the Algarve a couple of years ago in the October half term, we flew from Cardiff. The weather was very pleasant but not overly hot, low to mid 20s.

InABigCountry · 13/04/2019 23:47

We've been away a few times I October, I like getting away before winter. Been to Menorca, Majorca, Corfu and Crete. The weather can be unpredictable anywhere but in future I wouldn't go back to Majorca or Menorca on October. Would go to Greece, Cyprus or south of Spain like Malaga, or the Canaries.

dontknowwasmadetoknow · 14/04/2019 08:30

We're going on a cruise for a week, hopefully weather will be pleasantly warm.
We were thinking about turkey or Cyprus but the cruise came in slightly cheaper surprisingly.

We went to fuertaventura last October, our first trip abroad with the kids. Weather was perfect for me, mid to high-twenties and breezy. Warm enough to swim in the sea.

We stayed in the north which was quite quiet and peaceful. Flew from Bristol with decent flight times.

BirdsInTheAttic · 14/04/2019 08:48

Thanks for all the suggestions, lots here to think about! Those who’ve mentioned cruises, are you doing those with small children?

Also we've been All Inclusive a few times which is good with young kids as if they don't like something they can go and get something else. Depends what you want, the only thing with AI is it ties you to the hotel as you end up eating there all the time. We did it a few times when our kids were young but our last and next holiday is self catering.

PineapplePatty · 14/04/2019 13:05

Cyprus is glorious in October

EnglishGirlApproximately · 14/04/2019 15:03

DS is seven now but went on his first cruise at three. We love it, it’s such an easy holiday with kids and ticks all of our boxes. We get to sight see and eat great food and Ds has a water park and loads to do so we’re all happy

CottonSock · 14/04/2019 15:07

Algarve, although there is a chance of rain you can fly from Cardiff. Canaries lovely but much longer flight so more expensive. We booked villa in Algarve last Oct half term. 4 beds and pool, massive garden for £600

BirdsInTheAttic · 14/04/2019 15:41

@cottonsock, do you mind me asking who you booked the villa with?

It was on home away.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 14/04/2019 16:42

We stay in a place called Oasis Parque on the Algarve because there's a huge indoor swimming pool that's heated so even if it rains you can guarantee that the kids can have fun.

It's near the beautiful beaches of Alvor. Just got back today actually. This is the pool.

Sorry I have no idea why but that link above is taking you to the wrong place. If you google Oasis Parque Portimao Airbnb there are several apartments and villas to rent on there

Susanna30 · 14/04/2019 17:49

corralejo fuerteventura

Very nice town and harbour, things to do if the weather is not great. But a good chance of lovely mid 20s weather in October! Have been in December & January and it's been warm. Incredible sand dunes and beach, protected as a national park. Able to go up into the valvanic area and explore on buggies. Good for kids.

Can I ask how was your October med cruise - we are thinking of going in one Barcelona to Rome/ - I think pools probably will be too cold to use. But how was the weather ? Calmness of the seas ? Thank you

Honeycrisp · 14/12/2024 21:52

East med is less risky than West at that time of year, weather wise.
