Just dropped my daughter at Stansted Airport. You know how you can pick up and drop off at Heathrow, Gatwick etc,,......well not at Stansted. If you want to just drop someone off or pick them up at the terminal for even 30 seconds you are charged. It''s been renamed"Express drop off" and you are informed it is private land that is camera controlled. Its £4 for 10 mins and additional there after. Madness. Somebody is making a mint. There is nowhere else to stop so they have you by your wobbly bits !!!!!!

Liverpool introduced a £3 charge too. Even the black taxi rank have an extra charge too which they pass on to the passenger!

Tomtontom · 07/04/2019 13:55

(If you need to stay for longer to support a disabled passenger contact them in advance.)

All the parking options are detailed on their website.

Fere · 07/04/2019 13:55

you can drop off for free in Gatwick @nrpmum and collect too, you just can't park and pay nothing

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 07/04/2019 14:03

Airports, like hospitals, take full advantage of the fact that you are a captive audience. The fuckers.

Lots of airports have nearby parking with free shuttle buses so I wonder if dropping off and picking up there is a possibility?

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/04/2019 14:04

Cassandra I used to do that too. That was until I was picking them up once. Meant to be about 10 when the flight was due to get in. The plane was 2 hours late to start so I was still home at midnight. Then they landed and I left home, takes half an hour.

They were kept on the plane for another 2 hours because they had no ground crew to depart them. They eventually get off the plane, then the terminal had a lockdown. I did not get home until nearly six and I left the house about half 12. So me and my DD are stuck in the early hours in our pjs, sitting in tesco carpark 10 minutes away.

So Stansted can get to fuck.

acatcalledjohn · 07/04/2019 14:08

@elQuintoConyo Looks like they've reduced it to one hour in Long Term. Still, for the sake of a short & free bus ride it's worth doing.

I think you just have to accept that airports are a rip off. £4 seems cheap in comparison to the £18 each that it costs to get the train to London.

GabsAlot · 07/04/2019 14:15

go to the car park they usually have a free drop off point then u can get shuttle bus to the terminal thats what i did at gatwick

nrpmum · 07/04/2019 14:16

Thanks Fere I must have misread the website.

lanbro · 07/04/2019 14:24

Same at Newcastle for directly outside the terminal but the short stay is free for 15mins and just 2 mins walk away from terminal, but I don't think many people realise so get stung with a high charge

LadyRannaldini · 07/04/2019 14:27

I saw this at the airport yesterday. Is there a way of dropping someone off at the airport without getting a charge?

Yes, go into the Midstay car, you can drop off/collect there and not pay for the first hour you're in there.
It's expensive certainly but you weren't 'robbed' it's well posted and you choose to pay it by going that way! Maybe next time you use your brain and check the options beforehand.

DuesToTheDirt · 07/04/2019 14:27

Same at Edinburgh. And the short-stay car park is extortionate, the first half hour is £7, then up to £10 if you're there an hour.

MissUGirl · 07/04/2019 14:31

We all need to stop being so reliant on our cars.

DontLookBackIntoTheSun · 07/04/2019 14:34

I’m quite happy to pay for the convenience, it’s not robbery at all. There is a train station so you can avoid dropping people off in the first place. Alternatively there is free drop off in the mid stay car parks.
There has to be restrictions on car usage; if drop off right outside the terminal was free, you’d never be able to get a space!

meddie · 07/04/2019 14:34

Yeah that would be great MissuGirl. but outside of london many places have really rubbish public transport.

LittleChristmasMouse · 07/04/2019 14:35

You can drop off in the car park which is free and they catch a shuttle bus to the terminal.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 07/04/2019 14:39

Train stations are starting to do this as well. My parents'station has no free drop off: you have to buy a one hour ticket. This in a town with no buses that actually go to the station. You would have to get a once every half hour bus and then walk ten minutes. It's shit.

DontLookBackIntoTheSun · 07/04/2019 14:41

Shit to have to walk for 10 minutes? Really? Unless you are disabled, that’s ludicrous.

meddie · 07/04/2019 14:42

You cant even drop off near Liverpool airport as they have made all the roads around there red routes so there is no stopping. I live only 8 miles from the airport yet the public transport journey is 1 hour 20 minutes.because there are no direct routes and its a 1 mile walk 2 or 3 buses then 10 minute walk. Its ridiculous with cases.

Lelelel26 · 07/04/2019 14:44

dropping off for stansted trains and you pay the charge too, pain if thats’s your local station (local residents get a discount though)

VickyEadie · 07/04/2019 14:52

The nearest train station to me - which is in a small town - has only one charge for parking in the station car park. SIX QUID for up to the whole day.

I park and lurk in the car if meeting someone and am very happy to drop them outside the station and feck off when they leave - saves all that embarrassing hanging about until their train arrives/leaves.

CassandraCross · 07/04/2019 14:55

What a nightmare Tali. We had something similar a while ago, nowhere near as bad, delays after landing and the person picking up was early so went to Starbucks and then had drive out and re-park at McDonald's. I just tell people not to worry or rush to get there, I'll keep them updated by text and I have no problem waiting outside for them to arrive, it's no big deal or hassle I'm just grateful for being collected.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 07/04/2019 14:59

Our local station has no drop off point at the moment so you just get to loiter in a bus bay and fight it out.

I can't get worked up about this £4 must be the cheapest thing in the entire airport. They don't want us to drive there so they're disincentivising it.

Pigflewpast · 07/04/2019 15:00

We all need to stop being so reliant on our cars.

Leeds Bradford airport has no train station. It is actually about 6 miles out of both Leeds and Bradford. I live 10 minutes drive from it, but there is no direct bus service, and afaik no buses at all late at night/ early morning. To get there by bus I would have to walk 20minutes, sit on a bus for up to1 hour, then sit on another bus for a similar time. Or I can drive it in 10 minutes, or get a taxi, which is still a car. But I need to stop being reliant on cars 🙄

Pluginwall · 07/04/2019 15:00

We all need to stop being so reliant on our cars

If I wanted to get to Stansted airport today on public transport - I couldn't - there are no buses on a Sunday.

If I leave tomorrow I can catch the bus, but the 20 minute car journey would take 2 hours and 2 buses. There are only 8 buses a day (between 7.30am and 7.00pm so not option for early flights).
