Can't comment on journey to airport, but i'd get there early. we flew from there in May and there was a huge security queue. They're also dead strict about liquids in the clear plastic bag, and we had our nappy rash sudocream confiscated because it was 125ml and not 100ml, as is the strict limit!!!

So you need to be at the airport at 9am? The M1 should be ok once you get on it as you would be going against rush hour traffic but I woulod guess that traffic in N. London and Luton might be heavy....

Can you manage without the buggy or would your dd be ok to walk for a bit while you push a trolley? Whether you go by car or train you won't be able to push a buggy and carry/wheel a suitcase...

Link from Luton airport parkway train station to airport is via a very crowded bus (ie: standing room only most of the time) with minimal space for luggage - and getting to it involves several escalators from the platform up and down to the front of the station. I think it would be a nightmare with a buggy and case and child. Regardless of their advertising, Luton is not very easy to access via public transport.

I would avoid M1 if you can as lots of road works going on atm especially around Luton area. Having said that the drop off area is quite easy to find and once dropped off you are very near the check in areas. Can you avoid M1 - where abouts do you live? A1M is a good alternative, come off at Hitchin and follow signs

Or travel to Harpenden (about 25 mins from London Kings Cross (Thameslink)) and get a taxi (lots of them always waiting outside) to the airport - cost about £8. Really quick and really simple. I can find you a couple of taxi numbers for you to confirm price if that option interests you.

Trains to Harpenden are run by First Capital Connect and they stop at various starions in London (north and south). Where in London are you travelling from?
