Hi - so we're off to Vegas for DH's birthday in May. Does anyone have any tips or advice please especially in terms of what to pack? We will be going to a couple of night clubs whilst there but unsure of evening dress codes for this & evening attire

Its an anything goes attire wise in most of vegas, plenty of people walking around in casual tshirts and shorts, its super hot in the day but windy as anything at night so maybe take a cardi/ jacket. Cant really comment on going out out as we didnt - If your a Hells Kitchen fan would advise you to book the restaurant (looks great) we were to late and didn't manage to get a booking.

Take out a small loan if you plan on drinking in the night clubs ha!

Wynn Buffet, Valley of Fire, Grand Canyon. Denny's for cheap breakfast.

We went for the first time last September, it was boiling! Day and night. prepare yourself for really hot weather.

I took my trainers as we did so much walking, but on the nights I did wear sandals. We didn't go into a club, but I would think there may be dress codes in some of the classier clubs?

Where are you staying? We stayed at New York New York. We got the bar experience from there. $40 and gives 6 drinks and free entry in to the bars where there'd normally be a cover. Well worth it, we had a fab night.

We got a Groupon for the buffet at Caesers Palace. AMAZING!

Go to Fremont Street one night, our mistake was getting there too early, we got there about 9pm but with the jetlag was knackered by about midnight, when it was just starting to get going, various bands/dj's starting. I wish we'd have had a nap and got there about midnight instead.

I hope you have a fantastic time, we absolutely loved it. We aren't big gamblers, but still had so much fun.

$20 in your passport when you check in used to get you a room upgrade. Not sure if it still does. We went about 8 years ago. If you tip the waitress when you're gambling (inc the slots you get free drinks).

Think about transport. There's the monorail (train that stops at some of the casinos) and the deuce (bus). Personally we found the monorail most time efficient but you need the deuce for freemont street which is worth it.

We stupidly tried to adjust to Vegas time and then ended up being too tired by the end of the day. In hindsight we should have just stayed on UK time!

You have to go to Peppermills for breakfast (it's next to the Riviera) and is probably the best diner in Vegas. It's the place that Americans know about and go to. You really won't regret it. Cocktails with breakfast anyone?

Packing wise the only things I'd strongly suggest you take are good walking sandals, sun cream and after sun. You do more walking than you think you will.

It's all great fun. I seem to remember a few websites that tell you about all the Vegas freebies. You can get discounted shows at TKTS. Don't buy tickets from people when you're queuing - they might seem legit and have a lovely back story but they're not.

Thank you all for your replies & tips, really looking forward to it - bar experience looks like it's good value so checking that out Smile

I've been to Vegas a number of times and actually got married there last year! It's a fantastic place. Incredibly hot day and night, make sure you are able to have something to drink regularly. You can have a bottle of water with you and it will turn warm if you haven't drunk it quickly enough! Many hotels charge $25 a day to have a fridge in your room, however, if you need it for medication then they give it to you free of charge.

I’ve been to Vegas every year for the past three years. Even going for a whole month last June and it was amazing. Just can’t get enough of it. Going again this year, late June.

You’ll love it. Here’s a few tips.
-It is very hot, make sure to take sun cream, even lip cream with sun protection. My lips were red raw sore the first year I went and it was September!
-Make sure to take a good pair of sandals, or something you’re comfortable in.
-There’s two buses that run up and down the strip, one is called the Deuce and the other is an RTC. One of which runs from Mandalay Bay to Fremont Street. You can buy 8 hour, 24 hour and 3 day bus passes. Would highly recommend the 3 day, I think it’s $20 each but it’s totally worth it because the strip is a long walk depending on where you’re going and in that heat, it’s not a good mix.
-Don’t buy water, soft drinks, snacks, etc in the hotel shops. Go to Walgreens or cvs, numerous ones on the strip, as those little shops in the hotel charge almost double.
-There are tonnes of people along the strip trying to give out stripper card things and also, last two years, they’ve had what look like Buddhist monks all over the strip, who don’t speak a word of English, they’ll come over to you, so fast or just appear out of nowhere and they’ll put a bracelet on your wrist and pull out a donations sheet. It’s a scam. They’re trying to get money and if they manage to put the bracelet on your wrist, they think you’ll be obliged to give them money. I only know it’s a scam because it happened to me and one guy pulled out a donation sheet, all the names was in the same handwriting with huge amounts of money being donated.

Also don’t forget about the resort fee, I believe it’s at every hotel except Tropicana hotel. I stayed at Excalibur hotel & casino, couldn’t have picked a better hotel.

I 2nd Fremont Street, the Zip Line is brilliant. We went to see this show, spiegelworld.com/absinthe/
Absolutely brilliant...but only if you are not easily offended 😁

CabbageHippy · 02/04/2019 11:22

thank you all for your tips & advice

Good warning about the monks, will be aware & the fridge tip as I do have medication :-)

I love Vegas, we are going back in September.

Futuretings points are all great.

We stayed in Bellagio last time, elevators are very fast (we were top floor). There is a CVS right across the road (easy access using the walkways.

We would recommend Off the Strip down toward the High Roller for a meal (do the High Roller bar car if you can - fab experience), and also Guy Fieri's place inside the Linq.

We went down to Freemont and ate at the Heart Attack Grill, was ok as a one off, and I wouldn't rush back to Freemont Street to be honest.

Best tip I got - It isn't as close as it looks, and it really isn't just over there, comfy shoes, the buses, we never used the monorail but think we will this time as staying at Mandalay Bay.

CabbageHippy · 04/04/2019 14:04

thank you - was planning on going to the CVS as one of the first things we do when we arrive to stock up on a few drinks & room snacks for when we wake up too early for breakfast

I think the heart attack grill is on our list but maybe i'll bump that one a little lower as a must do.
