How does this work? 2 rooms in hotel

We usually go to America so are used to the whole 2 massive double beds in a room and all 4 of us in that.

Ds1 sits his GCSEs this summer so we are doing a shorter trip to Europe due to results day etc and Dh's work commitments.

All the hotels are offering us 2 x twin etc. The room is listed as 1 adult and 1 child in each room. How does this work in reality?

DCs are almost 16 and 13 year old boys. I would be happy with interconnecting rooms but realistically would they not be in their own room and Dh and I in ours?

I know everyone will say apartment or villa but I want to know how it works with the 2 rooms in a hotel.

Thanks.

If you normally all sleep together anyway, why wouldn't you do one parent and one child in each room if you are worried about them being on their own?

pinkmagic1 · 17/03/2019 18:00

Mine are almost 15 and 12 and we had two rooms when we went away last month. You have to book 1 adult and 1 child in each, but once you have checked in, you are free to do as you please. Just request that the rooms are close together.

WhiteNancy · 17/03/2019 18:01

When our youngest was 13 and oldest 15 we just had one room and dc another, it's never been an issue.

LIZS · 17/03/2019 18:04

Never had an issue with under 16s sharing in Europe but may vary in some countries

WhiteNancy · 17/03/2019 18:07

In fact, with teens the being able to have separate space and bathrooms has been worth the price of the second room Smile

Dramatical · 17/03/2019 18:12

Put the teens in one room and you in another. That's not really a challenge?

OrchidInTheSun · 17/03/2019 18:20

If you go to a modern hotel, you can usually as for interconnecting rooms

Frenchfancy · 17/03/2019 18:24

For safety reasons the hotels are not normally allowed to check in children into a room without an adult, but in reality we sleep with adults in one room and teens in the other.

AJPTaylor · 17/03/2019 18:28

I know what you mean! Booking sites will make you book one adult and child per room but no one cares once you get there!

WinterHeatWave · 17/03/2019 18:36

Not tried in Europe, but "apart-hotels" are doing us nicely at the moment - basically a 2 bed suite (also means we can cook our own breakfast at crazy early o'clock)

Graziass · 17/03/2019 18:39

Agree with others, no problem putting the DC in together at that age. Many hotels class 16 as adult but if they don't you won't have any problems registering 1+1 in each room and then using the rooms as you wish.

In Gran Canaria last year with 17 and 15 year old DDs we had one room and they had the one right next door. It was great. We had peace and privacy when we wanted it and so did they. Our balconies were joined with a short wall between them so we used to just pass things over or shout of them when we wanted them. Also had hotel phone to ring them to get them up for breakfast etc.

They loved the freedom.

MoBiroBo · 17/03/2019 21:36

Thanks, I didn't know how much it would be frowned upon or what the local laws were in specific countries as we are a bit undecided on where to go.

Our last Europe trip was pre-DC and post DC we do UK or US holidays with Premier Inn as our UK standard hotel so again, all 4 in a room. But that isn't an option in lots of hotels abroad.

I think they are old enough to stay in a hotel room by themselves Confused

Graziass · 17/03/2019 21:50

Have done four in a room for an airport hotel but couldn't face four in a room for more than one night!

whiteroseredrose · 17/03/2019 21:56

We've got a DS and a DD so we've always had a girl's room and a boy's room.

MoBiroBo · 18/03/2019 11:22

I am personally fine with them staying in a room together, no different than when Ds1 went on a school trip in year 10 and stayed with his best mate in a room together (along with 30 other students in the hotel)

I didn't know if there were any local laws/restrictions or whether hotels don't like it. It is probably something people do every year but we haven't been to Europe, in this case probably Spain/Portugal/Crete/Cyprus sort of places.

Given a choice I don't think either son would choose to share with me, mainly because although I have some knowledge of Rocket League/ApexLegends/Roblox I am not fluent in game talk Wink

I always contact the hotel directly and book with them, you get often a lot more choices for rooms or can book interconnecting ones compared to travel websites.

With teenagers?

God no, stick the teens in together and enjoy your night!
