Unusual reward trip

Looking for inspiration. My husband has been asked to arrange a reward trip for a small group of people associated with his business (all male). They would like to go somewhere unusual for 3-5 nights and are willing to travel a reasonable distance (up to about 8 hours). Budget is not an issue but we can't think of anything that hasn't already been done that is suitable for a small group of mid forties men. I suggested an ice hotel or chartering a yacht but they weren't keen. Any good ideas? Thank you

Diving holiday? Northern lights? Mountain climbing? Safari? Gambling/shows?

seanceinterrupted · 17/03/2019 13:14

Then of course there's the slightly less typical 40 year old blokes who'd love to trek hadrians wall or go to a particular convention or volunteer to help build a house/school etc

Thanks Sean. Vegas was the original idea but one of them has been and hated it. The Northern Lights could be good. I suggested safari too but they weren't keen. I also wondered about St Petersburg but apparently the visas are a nightmare

I should also add that one of them isn't very sporty and not at all fit so would struggle with things like mountain climbing

Iceland - all sorts of interesting treks and tours (some physically demanding, some not).

Penguinpandarabbit · 17/03/2019 13:37

Brown bears in the wild? Arola Bears in Finland or Wild Sweden (also do wolf, moose and beaver). Polar bears in Norway or fjords.

My DH went on a reward trip to Bermuda a few years back. He enjoyed that.

Penguinpandarabbit · 17/03/2019 13:42

I think you can do 72 hours in St Petersburg with no visa if you take ferry from Helsinki - no idea what that's like but saw it mentioned when we were in Finland.

seanceinterrupted · 17/03/2019 13:48

Visas can be hard for Russia. What about organising a tour guide for something like a cross balkans trip. With a group you would be able to book a guide who gets good hotel prices and knows where to stay and perhaps takes them places they wouldn't otherwise visit

Second Iceland. If you've only got 3-5 days you don't want to be spending 8 hours flying there and back!

OKBobble · 17/03/2019 13:51

The Ice Hotel was fantastic when we went. They even provide you with the outdoors gear and boots.

What about a trip to Ireland for horse racing?

Trip to Italy or France for cookery/wine tasting? We stayed in a Chateau near St Emilion. It was great!

You really aren't going to cater to all tastes whatever you decide.

OKBobble · 17/03/2019 13:51

Nile cruise?

Rhine cruise?

Asitgoes · 17/03/2019 13:55

It was years ago I did this but utterly memorable - canoeing down the Orange River in Namibia. Minimal fitness required, a couple of rapids for excitement and open air camping on the river bank.

ColdCottage · 17/03/2019 14:11

If you want me to look at some options for you pm as this is what I do for a living. No cost to you, I just get a commission from the hotel I place the business with for sending them the business. I work with high corporates all the time and get sent lots of ideas. Happy to help if you'd like.

Mammyofonlyone · 17/03/2019 14:31

Thanks everyone. Helsinki/St Petersburg sounds good.
Cold, how do you pm? I can't see how to do it

I third Iceland - absolutely amazing place with things to do that will suit all levels of sporty/non-sporty. I've travelled loads and it's right up there as one of my favourite trips ever. Snorkelling between the tectonic plates, the Blue Lagoon, geysers, volcanoes - amazing!

Penguinpandarabbit · 17/03/2019 23:44

If they are into cars:

I've just been covering a stay at Deplar Farm in Iceland..... if budget's not an issue....!

Mammyofonlyone · 18/03/2019 07:36

Thank you, will look into Iceland again. Ice driving in Lapland sounds like it would be fun for them too. I will suggest it today and see how it goes down!

Is this part of your DH’s job that he arranges this holiday? Or is he doing it as a favour?

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/03/2019 08:56

Visit Chernobyl? A quick google brings up [[https://www.tourkiev.com/ this company. Not a recommendation but just an example and it looks like they offer tours of a missile base and something military too - all of which would appeal to many middle aged men.

Learn to scuba dive - you can go pretty much anywhere and learn to dive from scratch over a few days, but would need to check that no-one has any health conditions that excludes them from diving first. Malta or the Canaries would be a good beginner location with a good choice of English speaking operators.

Mammyofonlyone · 18/03/2019 14:10

It's a favour. He usually arranges the trips away for some reason, not always though. Chernobyl would've been ideal but one of them has already been!
