London Victoria station

If you had a couple of hours to kill and wanted to say close to Victoria station what would you do?

Were coming in by train to Victoria at about 11 then seeing the matinee of Hamilton at the Victoria theatre 2.30. DS is on a wheelchair so were unlikely to be able to get too far and get back in time

Get lunch in Victoria Place upstairs or in the small shopping centre just down the road on opposite side f thecstreet. You will need to get to the theatre well ahead to go through their security. If you want to go somewhere Westminster Cathedrals is not far.

RiverTam · 07/03/2019 16:41

If you can I'd try to get to Cardinal Place to eat, it's nicer than Victoria Place, and you could wander round the shops a bit. And agree Westminster Cathedral (not the Abbey) is lovely.

strawbmilk · 07/03/2019 16:49

Look up victoria market halls for something to eat. It's recently opened with lots of different food outlets from some great London restaurants if you would rather that than heading to a chain. It's between the station and the theatre.
Buckingham Palace is a short walk away if that would be of interest Smile

strawbmilk · 07/03/2019 16:53

Oh and enjoy Hamilton - it's fab!

Br1ll1ant · 07/03/2019 16:54

Buck palace or a sit in St James Park - both less than ten minutes walk

BorsetshireBlew · 07/03/2019 16:54

Buckingham palace is walking distance away

blitzen · 07/03/2019 16:55

I did the London bus afternoon tea from Victoria station and back. It was amazing.

LIZS · 07/03/2019 16:56

Is the Royal Mews open at this time if year?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 07/03/2019 16:57

I’d catch a bus up along to Parliament and up past Downing Street to traflagar square. You can then walk back along the Mall and last Buckingham palace. It’s a nice little tour.

RiverTam · 07/03/2019 17:53

OP's DS is a wheelchair user, and presumably they need to have lunch before the show.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 07/03/2019 18:09

Sorry I missed that - they can still get a bus the 36(I think) goes from the main road all the way up to Trafalgar Square and it’s a nice ride. The buses are all wheelchair friendly.

Maybe take in Westminster abbey, Westminster Cathedral and Hogwarts Westminster Upper school? That’s right next to Parliament and about a 10-15 min walk from the station (and you pass some nice places for a bite to eat too).

GreenEggsHamandChips · 07/03/2019 18:09

Atm ive got plans to eat after the show and bring sandwiches so im reasonably flexible. That said the food at the Victoria market does look nice, but every photo (including the entrance) seems to show steps!!! Is it very accessible? It needs to be an easy roll

Royal mews is open, is it worth a visit?

Westminster cathedral is a definite maybe

Love the big ben Trafalgar square round trip, but not really for this time.

Where is the food market?

strawbmilk · 07/03/2019 19:16

Ah I'm really sorry I'm not sure about the access. I just looked on the website and there are no details. It's only just opened within the past few months so you would hope it had been modernised with wheelchair accessibility in mind. I had a baby with me and there were a few steps at the front, but once inside there are stalls on the ground floor and some on the first. I didn't see a lift or use the bathrooms to advise about accessibility. Sorry.

The other poster asking where the market halls were, they are out the main exit of the station across the road on the left hand side. In the old pacha building if that makes sense!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 07/03/2019 19:24

Crikey when did that spring up! There are a few places to eat at the shopping area opposite the cathedral (street level and covered if the weather turns bad). There’s also a Wagamama up an escalator by the M&S but I’m sure there is a lift somewhere - the security guards there are really nice and friendly so I’m sure they would help out.

I like the Pizza express further up the road (same side as the cathedral) and there’s a japneee (itsu?) a bit further along. There is also a Very Fancy donut shop there too and a chocolate one. If you fancy fish and chips there’s a chippy nearby.

How come I know where all the food is?

GreenEggsHamandChips · 07/03/2019 20:05

That's what surprises me. The website having no accessibility information at all! Search trip advisor no reviews with wheelchairs.

Swinging between trying to get up to London early enough to catch either the royal mews or Westminster cathedral. Or getting up there at a much more leisurely pace and stopping for a small smakeral of something at the Victoria market.

Anyone whos been to Hamilton how long before tge start would you be recommending getting to the theatre?

OP posts:
LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 07/03/2019 20:46

The Theater is 5 mins from the station - straight out the front - head towards the ‘little ben’ on the crossing island and it’s rigjt behind.

The theatre has a gold ballet dancer statue balanced on one tippy toe (god knows how) on the top of a dome - you can’t miss it! This is the end of Victoria Street!

The big office block/centre just along the the right (as you face it) is the area that has restaurants through the arch, a M&S, boots, clothes shops etc. There is also a walkway through some new blocks just to the left (anther nice donut place in there) and a burger n shake place on the corner (also sells ‘frozen custard’ - but that ice cream!!!!!?).

Cyberworrier · 07/03/2019 20:48

Tate Britain isn’t far. Lots on there and good cafe! Or Churchill Cabinet War rooms?

LIZS · 08/03/2019 07:24

I think you queue up to an hour beforehand. You will get sent instructions a day or two before. It may be different for disabled access though.

RiverTam · 08/03/2019 08:27

I think we got there about 45 mins before - it said on the ticket, IIRC. Or we got an email. It was all very efficient so I'm sure you'll get info about wheelchair access etc.

bookmum08 · 08/03/2019 08:38

I wouldn't go very far from the theatre. The buses can take way longer time than you think to travel a short distance. With queuing to get in /security /going to the loo you will probably have barely an hour spare.

LondonHuffyPuffy · 08/03/2019 08:42

I was going to suggest Tate Britain as well. It’s a short bus ride - the C10 from Buckingham Palace Rd stops right outside. It’s a wheelchair accessible bus (as are all buses now). You can walk it in about 20 minutes. The 507 bus is slightly quicker but stops a bit further away from TB on Horseferry Road

ColeHawlins · 08/03/2019 08:43

Oh I was going to say Green Park and the Cabinet War rooms, but there's NO accessible access to the CWRs.

TBH, round there it'll be an issue in many places. Once I needed wheels, I got so cheesed off with London accessibility, I moved out to a civilised market town Grin/Angry

You clearly have the patience of a saint.

LondonHuffyPuffy · 08/03/2019 08:44

Oh didn’t read the posts about having to be at the theatre 45 minds beforehand (live in London and hardly ever go to the theatre these days 😳). That doesn’t leave a lot of time to get to Tate Britain and have a wander round

ColeHawlins · 08/03/2019 08:51

I think, overall, I'd get a dessert from wherever easiest and head for St James' or Green Park.
