Can you fill us in? And is it you that knows about Fairfields - or does anyone else have recent expreience of these two hotels? It's urgent we're looking for somewhere for next week.

This is a squel to the "Moonfleet vs...." thread. The fudge is still up for grabs.

Thanks, Bear

Hi bear, sorry to hijack but just wanted to catch you to say that dp is being picky about backpacks so do let yours go if you've got a buyer. Interested to know what sq thought of Langstone Cliff. Always interested in hotels...

BearintheBigBlueHouse · 07/09/2004 22:51

Hey WWW - haven't done anything about it yet, but the offer still stands if he wants to have a go with it to see if it suits. If I don't hear from you in the next week or so, I'll look for someone else for it .

Yes she is, they had a fab time. Will ring her and ask her to check the thread!

serenequeen · 08/09/2004 12:38

hi there bitbbh! yes we're back. you should probably give marina the fudge, she called me earlier!

we had a great time. it's an easy drive from london, we made it in approx 3.5 hrs, no problems.

it is in a good location next to a very sandy and clean beach with lots of good shell collecting - not crowded if you gravitate towards the western end.

the hotel has a pleasant terrace overlooking a small outdoor pool with a great seaview - dh and i had drinks there every night. the indoor pool and playroom were also hits with ds (3).

the rooms were ok, nothing special, but perfectly fine.

worst thing was the evening food - it really was canteen standard. ok it was edible, but tough meat, overcooked everything... other meals were fine though.

kids high tea ok, but reliant on "kiddie food" e.g. nuggets, beans etc. other veg available, plus fruit and yoghurt so not entirely bad news.

the staff were friendly and helpful and it is genuinely welcoming to kids.

if i had to choose between this hotel and bedruthan though, i would say bedruthan wins on every count.

it was some friends of ours who went to fairfields and had a good time, so i have mentioned it on mumsnet before on the strength of that and a very positive review i read in the guardian - no personal exp. these same friends went to moonfleet more recently and said it was a much better bet if the weather lets you down. moonfleet is also much more upmarket - fairfields is a much more down to earth place from what i gather, i wouldn't go expecting glamour if that's what you are into.

i hope that helps. please let me know if you would like more info. i will be able to get back to you this evening, but probably not before.

good luck

I must say guys that when you all come back from these places they never sound like they are that great - why is it that they can't just do a really nice hotel with a bit of childcare on the side?

Do you actually use the childcare all the time when you are there?

coddychops · 08/09/2004 12:52

yes I must admit I wonder this too
are you all addicted to it?! :)

coddychops · 08/09/2004 12:53

why dont you all just go to a cottage and spend the money you woudl have spent at these places on going out and about?

bettys · 08/09/2004 13:04

We've just got back from Hell Bay. They don't have childcare there, but the welcome & attitude towards children is superb, and the high teas top notch! Not a nugget or bean in sight, it's basically just scaled down adult food. For us it's a luxurious treat to stay somewhere where the rooms & facilities are so good. We also do the self-catering cottage thing - it's just nice to have excellent meals cooked for you & rooms cleaned by someone else for a change.

CountessDracula · 08/09/2004 13:04

bettys I have cakes in my freezer for you!

bettys · 08/09/2004 13:06

Hurrah! How nice to come home to cakes! Thank you

coddychops · 08/09/2004 13:15

bettys
remember the crime trailer you were doing?
how did it go

bettys · 08/09/2004 14:28

It was fine......have done another since then & am now working on something about classic cars. I should be outside on a day like this!

serenequeen · 08/09/2004 16:20

harrumph. the reason we go is the same as bettys. i said we had a great time. if you are giving information to someone else on the basis they might book there then imho it is only fair to give a warts and all picture.

what impertinence!

serenequeen · 08/09/2004 16:20

coddy that is a really rude comment

serenequeen · 08/09/2004 16:21

excuse me for wanting to go to a hotel rather than self catering with a 5 wk old baby

CountessDracula · 08/09/2004 16:23

SQ how is your little one?

BearintheBigBlueHouse · 08/09/2004 16:54

SQ and everyone else - thanks for all your comments, I'm really grateful for the full picture, it enabled me in a quite-out-of-it state of mind to make something approaching a reasoned decision. Bedruthan is too far for a couple of days and with a 10-monther and a 2.11 yo, the steps to the beach can wait for a year or two. The food at Langstone put me off. Moonfleet - couldn't cope with the expectation based on the price and "luxury" tag being followed by a (more shabby than chic) let down. Hell Bay we will book for next summer. So Knoll House got the nod and they squeezed us in. Hooray. Will investigate Studland/Purbeck fudge mines and bring some back - you're welcome to leave forwarding addresses.

bitbbh - hope you have a wonderful time and don't forget to come back to us and tell us what it's like. lol at "fudge mines"!

cd - she is great, thank you. i am v. v. v. lucky - a good sleeper, hence holiday. no point otherwise - IMHO.

she did enormous noisy poo and big sick today - simultaneously! followed by enormous gummy smile! she will fit right in with us

hope all is well with you. i second all the advice you have been given so far re (live-in) nanny housekeeper. it is the only way i can see if you both have demanding jobs.

good luck to you in sorting this out and your other endeavours

Well, IMO, a holiday without childcare is like being at home but much harder work. I still do it but it would be lovely to be able to spend some time with dp, without kids, which is why I want a childcare option if I'm going to pay 300 odd a night. I really like the look of Hell Bay bettys, was it you who posted a link to it recently? I've saved it to my favourites and intend going. Bear, do tell us about Knoll when you're back, don't think I've looked at that.

serenequeen · 21/09/2004 21:12

hi bitbbh, how did it go? hope you all had a lovely time. am still sniggering at "fudge mines" - dh and ds wondering wistfully if they really exist...

bettys · 21/09/2004 21:18

Oooh yes WWW go go go to Hell Bay! We had a great time there a couple of weeks ago, you don't really care that there's no childcare it's so lovely.
I want a trip down a fudge mine....

BearintheBigBlueHouse · 22/09/2004 09:49

OK - here goes. Would love to give you the low-down on KH, but had to leave (stressfully) within than 24 hours of similarly stressful arrival, so perhaps we?re not the best people to ask. Chose KH because of location (level walk to lovely beach) and reputation for looking after families with tinies. Please note that I am aware of the stupidly high standards I demand of hotels and that the vast majority of the population would be very happy with somewhere that I would shudder at, and if anyone reading this was there at the same time as us, I?m sure you had a lovely time. That said.....

Getting there was a pain - what should have been a do-able 2 hour journey was turned into over 3 hours by lorries and harvest tractors. D?oh! So we arrived after the lunch sitting. Virtually the first thing the receptionist said to me was we?d missed lunch so would need to drive to a pub down the road. DS (11m) was seriously overdue lunch and afternoon nap and had been waging WW3 in the back seat with his (2y 10m) sister for the previous 45 minutes - so a drive to the pub was not what any of us needed. Luckily the head housekeeper (I think), called VIcky - and the BEST person there by a long way, happened to be passing reception and said that they?d been saving lunch for our two in the Children?s DIning Room.

DCs loved lunch and we repaired to our rooms for naps. Now it?s not often that you can get 3 interconnecting rooms I know and we were picky about this (because DS is such a light sleeper and they?d never shared before so we didn?t want to ruin a holiday introducing the concept). But no-one told us you?d have to go through one of the children?s rooms to get to the other. Put DD in her bed, closed the door and put DS in his cot and sat in our room listening for the tell tale sounds of all hell breaking loose. Didn?t take long. DD although knackered decided, being in a new place, she would chat and sing her way through nap time, DS unable therefore to get off to sleep thought he?d join the caterwauling, so naps cancelled. There was no way we could have gone to DD to calm her/bribe her to sleep without brushing past DS and disturbing him. DW thought she?d politely ask at reception if there was any other configuration available and was (very) rudely treated by the receptionist. BTW ?baby listening? does not apply for daytime naps - so even if they had slept, one of us would have had to have stayed in the room.

Rooms were clean but cold and smelt damp and decor was c1973.

We cut our losses and got everyone up and went for a walk down to the beach - fine - DD and DW had a quick chilly paddle and we yomped up to high tea. Again fine. Good set up.

After tea we played in the playground which DCs loved and suitably knackered (all of us) we prepped them for bed. They went down all right and we got ready for dinner (I also went and washed and sterilised bottles in the 24 hour access Childrens Dining Room kitchen which had constant milk and cooled boiled water and Baby Organix available - very useful) - by this stage we thought we might actually enjoy ourselves. Baby listening in the evening involved a housekeeper sitting outside our room and listening - great.

Drink in the bar and into dinner. Menu was slightly disappointing (roast turkey and trimmings/lemon sole in white wine, cream and grape sauce/smoked salmon & halibut salad) and exceptionally speedy of service explained why. Everything pre-prepped and kept warm then sent out quick. So dining room virtually clear by 9.30pm - think we were last to leave. Clientele appeared to be 80% over 80 and the rest tired young parents. We were entertained over dinner by the medical ins and outs (quite literally) of the lovely 90 year old lady three tables away which we couldn?t fail to hear and enjoy. I guess if you?re used to/expecting this kind of meal it?s fine, but for the money we were paying, I?d hoped for a bit more finesse and choice.

Anyway after coffee in the lounge where very little chatting going on, we decided to turn in. To cut a long story short, DS woke 3am, possibly teething, possibly just waking in a strange cot and unable to get back over; DW tried to calm him, he was having none of it and cried big time. Major thunder storm kicked in which didn?t help matters. DW said she didn?t feel too good, I took over with DS while she beat a hasty retreat to bed. Eventually (4.30am) DS wiped out . I climbed back into bed and DW rushed out to the loo where she spent the rest of the night returning the lemon sole to its watery home.

When you get ill, the only place you want to be is your own bed. In the morning we decided to get DW home asap and notified reception before the DCs and I had breakfast. I packed up, packed the car and went to settle up. I explained that our hasty departure was due to DW?s food poisoning, but they were having none of it and invoiced us for the whole stay (which was a lot). I refused to pay on the basis that their food had caused the problem in the first place but in order to get away without a lengthy fight which DW didn?t need, we met half way, but still left with a bad taste (in many ways) in our mouths.

Trip home was worse (wouldn?t have thought it possible) than before.

Didn?t get anywhere near the pools - so can?t report back on them.

So that was our much needed holiday. We aren?t going there again. We probably won?t go on holiday again.

Needless to say no fudge was mined, sorry .
