Did you know suitcases shouldn't be wheeled along on pavements?

I bought DD a suitcase for her birthday - well 2 a big one and a smaller one - bright green

She used the smaller one 4 times and the wheels broke; I returned it and got a replacement

The second one just died after 3 uses

Apparently wheeling it along the pavement isn't allowed only in airports! And pulling it up a kerb is mis-use

I will never be able to use a suitcase again!!

I just wondered if anyone else had been told that?

Never heard that. How the heck are you supposed to get from the train station to the bus stop or to your house etc? You can’t possibly walk in the road!

greenelephantscarf · 25/02/2019 16:30

wtf
what are the wheels are for if not for pulling it along?

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 25/02/2019 16:31

Wtf?! Surely that’s literally the purpose of a wheelie suitcase?!

SpamChaudFroid · 25/02/2019 16:33

When I first read your post I thought you meant they had to be used on the cycle path or road, like skateboards and bicycles!

RagingWhoreBag · 25/02/2019 16:34

Bonkers! Although the valet at a hotel I stayed at last week asked if it was ok for him to use the wheels when he got my case out of the car, so maybe he knows something we don’t! I assumed it was because it had been raining and the wheels might get wet, but still said yes. He picked it up when he went over a puddle!

dingit · 25/02/2019 16:37

Nope. My dd wheels hers on an off trains to and from uni.

Stupidlyannoyed · 25/02/2019 16:50

Yes apparently we can't have a refund because it's been misused - I wanted to check I wasn't being dim and that this wasn't normal suitcase rules that had some how passed me by....

I'd better get a licence to drive my suitcase down the road next time I'm going away

Stupidlyannoyed · 25/02/2019 16:56

Well I went into TKMaxx and asked how many of their brands couldn't be wheeled along a pavement and the woman looked at me as if I was mad!

She said none of them! And I said if I brought a suitcase back because they has broken wheels after 3/4 uses would they refuse to replace them and she laughed and said if it looked like it had been used hard/like a backpacker or very old then they would be a bit Hmm but if it looked obviously ok they would replace

I wish I'd bought from them now

I would be fighting for that refund OP!

Stupidlyannoyed · 25/02/2019 18:09

I mena the were just over £100 reduced in a sale so I thought they were quality

Very disappointed tbh - I'm not sure how I'd go about taking it further as it was a concession in a shop not the shop

OP posts:

I'm surprised at that, but not very. You'd almost think manufacturers were trying to wriggle out of their obligations to provide goods that are fit for purpose. Surely not...

It's not just suitcases either - when my DC were small I had a beautiful navy blue buggy (good make) that faded very quickly. I took it back to the shop, only to be told "oh, you've used it outside..." Erm, yes - I clearly hadn't realised I'd bought an indoor buggy Hmm

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 25/02/2019 18:24

New Look tried that with some boots that had completely worn out after 10 days (not wearing them everyday!) They has a bit of mud on them. I wasn't supposed to wear them in bad weather apparently. It had rained one of the times I wore them. Yep. Winter in England. Known for its glorious weather. Hmm I got a refund.

MyDcAreMarvel · 25/02/2019 18:27

Not pulling it up a pavement is obvious .

NicoAndTheNiners · 25/02/2019 18:29

Not from house of Fraser by any chance?

madmumofteens · 25/02/2019 20:55

Can I ask where you bought the cases OP I am on the lookout for a new suitcase and can't believe what poor quality and expensive they are!

HerRoyalNotness · 25/02/2019 21:01

If you can get Away luggage there, I’ve heard very good things about them.

www.awaytravel.com/warranty

Their lifetime warranty covers broken off wheels, and says they can be used on foot as one method of use

ThomasRichard · 25/02/2019 21:08

Apparently sitting on a mattress is ‘misuse’ too. So no reading in bed and certainly no perching on the edge to pull your socks on!

Stupidlyannoyed · 26/02/2019 09:24

I guess I need to find out what normal/safe use of a suitcase is

Then I write a letter - to the shop or the concession?

GemmeFatale · 26/02/2019 09:26

I’d say wheeling along a smooth mosh pavement is normal but pulling it up/down curbs is obviously going to batter it. Lift up and down at curbs and then trundle down the street.

Longdistance · 26/02/2019 09:27

What make of case?

I’d start with contacting the company. I’ve used wheeled cases in the past as part of my job, and never heard of not using them in a pavement 🙄

TeaforTwoBiscuitOrThree · 26/02/2019 09:32

Oops, what about lugging them down stairs, going clunk-clunk-clunk?

BarbaraofSevillle · 26/02/2019 10:07

Not being able to use them on a pavement (and presumably any concrete surface like roads) rather than smooth airport surfaces is madness and a cop out and probably an unfair T&C.

But I'd take any claimed discount on suitcases with a huge pinch of salt. They seem to be one of those items where ludicrous discounts are always available, especially from TK Maxx and Debehams. You'd have to be mad to pay the alleged full price.

I've never understood why some suitcases cost so much. I lasted about 10 years with a hastily bought £13 Matalan suitcase and I only stopped using it because the size became impractical for the type of travel I did.

I now use an IT cabin suitcase that cost about £30 and a wheeled duffle diving kit bag, which did cost £80, but it fits in everything for a week's diving and clothes etc as well with well designed compartments. Suitcases that cost hundreds of pounds would have to pack and unpack themselves and adjust in size and shape for me to consider spending that much.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 26/02/2019 12:40

I wouldn't write a letter - i'd be calling them out on Social Media. Sadly, it seems to be the only way to get a result these days.
