A month in Spain for €1700

Slippiepippie · 24/02/2019 13:59

I booked 26 nights in Spain for myself and DP for €1700

I was in town the other day and TUI were advertising a week in mallorca for 1 couple.. €1600...

Just goes to show the value you can get and deals if you book everything yourself.

The first hotel is a 4 star hotel in Calpe right on the beach €600 for 2 weeks and the second is a 3 star hotel in Ibiza with breakfast! €700

To think the travel agencies are charging the amount i paid for a month... For a week

Please share holiday booking tips or money saving strategies

It depends when you’re going? And what you’re getting for that price?

Portugal at the moment is 3 months for £1890 on the algarve for studio apartment sleeping 4, indoor pool, bar, restaurant and daily exercise program, 2 minute walk to the front and restaurants & bars.

SileneOliveira · 24/02/2019 14:05

How many people can just take a month off work though?

FedUpOfBrexit · 24/02/2019 14:06

It depends when you are going I suppose. If you aren't tied to the school holidays you could find lots of bargains.
I'd love to find a bargain abroad in August but thanks to Brexit, and the school holidays it won't happen Sad

Tomtontom · 24/02/2019 14:10

It would be helpful to tell us when you have booked for, who you've booked with etc...

Mummyshark2018 · 24/02/2019 14:17

I'd like to know where/ who you have got these deals as my parents have recently retired and would love to do something like this.

Slippiepippie · 24/02/2019 15:19

Hi mummyshark

Sorry for not providing enough info.

I choose a date for flights on ryanair or aer lingus but be flexible with the dates as they can vary from even up to 100 extra for a saturday compared to flying on a Tuesday or wednesday.

Book accom with alpha rooms or travel republic they always have affordable hotels and you can pay as you go!

The best thing to do really is shop around for flights searching different dates.

If you want me to find a good deal i can as i really enjoy doing it :)

It's very doable, is that even a word?
I just booked a week for the 4 of us in the Easter holidays for £740.

Ryanair are shit but the flights can be ridiculously cheap, Tuesday and Wednesday usually the cheapest to fly. The flight for the 4 of us was £240 which includes checked bags and seats so cheaper if just taking hand luggage. We are staying in a villa we have stayed here several times previously but when I was looking there were apartments available for £180 per week!

So for just 2 people would be so cheap, DH and I actually commented today when booking that once retired you could travel like this regularly.

Many retirees ( that take advantage of the winter sun in Spain and algarve) are worried though as no one knows what the rules for travelling into Europe and how long people will be able to stay - as it may well be restricted?

But going directly to the place you want to stay will often be cheaper and I’ve found the place on algarve through Airbnb more expensive than directly with the apartment group

buttermilkwaffles · 24/02/2019 16:13

I prefer self-catering accommodation to hotels, but my self imposed budget is an average of £30 per night and I have managed to stay within that budget for Spain, Portugal, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro and France (obviously excluding Paris and also a few other expensive places like Barcelona). Mainly by going off season or shoulder season and using a mix of Airbnb, booking dot com ( with 10% cashback) and booking direct. Also, almost always booking last minute. Have had everything from small studio flats and granny flats to luxury 2 and 3 bedroom apartments with gardens or terraces for that price. Combined with cheap flights from budget airlines and as OP said above, some flexibility about dates/days you can fly, with week days often cheaper and also by tracking prices via Google flights email alerts.

Obviously this budget would be impossible during peak summer months of July and August and is also too low for many other Western European countries, like Germany, Belgium etc, but yes if you can be flexible about where and when you go you can holiday on a low budget.

Slippiepippie · 24/02/2019 16:42

Were from and flying from Ireland so we arent worrying about the booking of holidays.

But yeah travel republic and alpharooms are my best friend since you only have to make a 20 euro deposit.

It won't be worse than the rules for the rest of the world.

Who knows though, they could say 3 months limit for any Of the 27 countries in EU, the rest of the world is a country by country basis

BarbaraofSevillle · 25/02/2019 07:17

1600 euro for a week in Mallorca is quite a lot, we never pay anywhere near that, even for a package.

Your hotels average 43 to 50 euros per night so are not likely to be the same standard as the one that is being sold as part of the more expensive package, even including the travel agent's mark up. I'm not sure I'd want to stay in the same hotel for 2 weeks and then go to another hotel for another two weeks.

Are these apartments or hotel rooms? Because if it's the latter, you will have to eat out all the time, as you'll have no kitchen facilities, so likely to spend a fortune that way.

Sometimes people pay more because they want a nicer or bigger place, or more facilities and it's unlikely that the rooms you have booked will suit many people.

Slippiepippie · 25/02/2019 08:27

The first two weeks is a hotel room in a 4 star in calpe so wont have any cooking facilities but dont mind as I got to pay the balance over about 4 months. Calpe is cheap to eat out in so dont mind that

Ibiza self catering with breakfast included id be more worried about that end of the holiday being more popular and expensive.

Its still a great deal either way imo flights and accom for 2 people for the bones of a month for 1700😊

Can i suggest a website called Kiwi.com, not for booking as they have terrible reviews, although I have booked through them once and it was fine, but as a search engine. It is for flights and you can search for any time and any length of stay, it then gives you results cheapest first, you can then go to the relevant companies to book.

Slippiepippie · 25/02/2019 09:26

Never heard of that one thank you. Yeah it is handy using a site to search and then booking on a somewhat cheaper one. I originally found the first hotel on love holidays but booked on alpha and on the hotel site it was almost 30/40% more expensive
