How Much Spending Money - 3 Weeks in Australia

Just starting to plan a trip to Australia to visit family, so no accommodation costs. How much is reasonable spending money for 3 weeks in and around Sydney for a family of 4 (DCs 10 and 8)?

We want to do a few of the big sites but would plan plenty of picnics and not too many meals out. We might have access to a car so travel would just be in and around Sydney. I guess it's finding the balance between enjoying the holiday to the full, and not breaking the bank!

I can't judge on what you would spend as a family, but I would Sydney prices are about the same as London - for coffees, drinks, snacks etc. Coffee is around $3.50-$4.00, petrol is around $1.40 per litre if you need to fill up the car! There are differences between areas but this is based on central/slightly more expensive suburbs.

It's quite easy to do free stuff - or cheaply. Lots of waterside walks, national parks etc, with plenty of picnic areas.

We went to Melbourne last year for 4 weeks ,2 adults, 1 teenage dependent and 1 not so deoendent.
Hardly any accommodation costs. We were there for 4 weeks and spent just short of 5k. However we didn't hold back and had a blast!

At least $1000 a week, and spare for contingencies. Are you hiring a car? Cost of meals out will be at least $100 for lunch, minimum. It's a bloody expensive city. The zoo, entrance, snacks and the ferry a couple of hundred. Have a look at a few activities, plan an imaginary 'day' and then get an idea from that. I'd agree with the PP who said about $5000. If you have some to go home with all the better!

We were there for 3 weeks recently; mostly 2, sometimes 3 people with all accommodation and a few breakfasts included. Excluding car hire and lots of trips (already paid for) we spent around £3k on meals etc. This was a combo of Sydney (and surrounds), Melbourne and Tasmania. Like everywhere there are many places to suit many budgets x

Thanks all, yeah $5,000 sounds a good budget to aim for.

It would be our dream to take the DC to Oz so we'd rather not do it on a ridiculous budget. Likely it will be next year before we go, plenty time for saving.

Have a great time!
I'm saving up so I can go again at Christmas for 6 weeks.

We went for 3 weeks in August and found prices similar to UK. If you are going in our summer its worth spending a week by the Great Barrier Reef - we booked multi flights with BA and it cost only about £100 extra to go to Cairns and back.

You can do lots of things very cheapily or you can spend a lot - like you can spend a lot climbing the Harbour Bridge or you can just see it for free. You can drive to Blue Mountains and see most of sites for just odd parking charge, we also went in a national park for about $10 there for car and saw kangaroos. Whale watching is well worth doing - we did it from Port Stephens but can do from Sydney in the right season.

We are in Australia at the moment, based in Perth and it’s very expensive, much more than the UK. We spent two nights in Margaret River, accommodation already paid for and we spent the equivalent of 600 quid (2 adults) on eating out, visiting caves, wineries etc. So take as much as you can afford, you can always bring it back.

"So take as much as you can afford, you can always bring it back."

Best not to take any. Leave it in your UK bank earning interest until you need it. Just withdraw it from ATMs using a fee free travel friendly card as an when you need it, just like you would when at home.
