Please help - will I get kicked off plane because I'm fat?

BioGirl · 20/02/2019 18:34

I am currently 24 stone 8. About 340 lb and 5ft 11. I'm lucky in that I carry my weight everywhere and wear UK 26-28 clothes.

I am travelling twice soon on easyjet (18 inch seats) and another on a 17inch seat. I am terrified I will be kicked off.

I have been on a plane before but I was about 1 stone lighter but i did previously fit on Ryanair with an extender.

Does anyone have anything to ease my worry. I can't sleep at night!

I’m a 26, same height as you, never had a problem. I can’t put down my lap tray, but I usually have a baby on me so doesn’t make much difference

Bellatrix14 · 21/02/2019 08:33

If you’ve gone from 23 stone to 24 stone (if I interpreted that correctly) then I doubt it’s made a massive difference to your build, so if the airline seats are the same size then I imagine you will be fine if you didn’t have any problems last time. I would definitely check that the seats are the same size though!

EBearhug · 21/02/2019 08:43

I'm not even sure if the armrests lift up on Easyjet flights.

They have on all the Easyjet flights I've been on.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 21/02/2019 09:37

The armrests will go up, but they do remove people who don't fit, if they won't pay for a second seat:m.

Is that an option, OP? It will reduce stress for you, and give you more space. It'll also stop any potential embarrassment if the person next to you is also big or if they're visibly or audibly upset by you encroaching in their space.

BIWI · 21/02/2019 17:06

Only four posts from you @BioGirl, and all about the same worries. Surely you must have found out by now if your weight is a problem on these airlines!

Smotheroffive · 21/02/2019 22:17

It's not fucking fat-phobic!

It's horrible being overweight, but it doesn't give you rights over and above other people's comfort ffs! Which obviously does happen and never should. Each person has to pay for their seat and if it's too small you do absolutely need to buy a bigger one, onan additional one of the same size, or not fly, or....seriously consider enough the horrible impact your weight is having on your life and health. It's not about shaming, its just this is the reality of being overweight, and noones alone in that, a greater proportion of us are now morbidly obese.

Why does OP keep posting this?

CatandtheFiddle · 22/02/2019 11:10

This thread has really stayed with me. I’ve lost a significant amount of weight over the last year for health and well-being reasons. It’s not easy but once I set my mind to eating differently it wasn’t too hard

Because I no longer wake up in the middle of the night dreading a stroke or heart attack.

I do find it odd that the OP seems more worried about fitting into a cheap airline seat than the long term effects on her health - and her life - from being so over ideal weight.

Medicos don’t call it “morbid” obesity for nothing. It can kill you.

Smotheroffive · 22/02/2019 11:16

Well done catandfiddle

I don't think OP is engaging with her thread, and has others repeating same issue. Think it's a bit odd.

IrmaFayLear · 22/02/2019 11:23

I agree it's not fat-phobic.

Someone upthread suggested having the armrest up, but that only works if you are flying with a friend/partner. I can't say that I would agree to having the armrest up if a stranger requested it, whatever size they happened to be. Too friendly by half!

Dsis was just on a flight where the adjacent very tall passenger put their leg in her footwell. Typical of dsis, she didn't say anything but spent the flight with her legs squeezed to the side to avoid rubbing legs with strange man...

SoupDragon · 22/02/2019 11:24

All your previous threads have been about a fear of being "kicked off" a flight for being fat.

Were you ever kicked off any of them for being fat?

SoupDragon · 22/02/2019 11:25

You never seem to engage on these threads or respond in any way so I'm not sure what the pint of asking is.

SpanielEars070 · 22/02/2019 11:25

I'm a size 18/20 and only just felt comfortable on Easyjet, it was ahem... snug shall we say and luckily I sat by family so it wasn't an issue.

You will need 2 seats OP and I would still get their advice on it from customer services.

livefornaps · 22/02/2019 11:29

I think the OP just wanted to be told that everything would be hunky dory when in actual fact it's just not fair to wreck someone else's flight by taking up all the space.

mysteryfairy · 22/02/2019 11:37

I travelled on easyJet this week and had an extra legroom seat in row 1. The seats in row 1 did not have arm rests but instead had rigid dividers between the seats so there would have been no possibility of encroaching into the next seat even if it was someone else from your travelling party who did not mind. I looked back and the other rows had normal arm rests that could be lifted.

BIWI · 22/02/2019 19:47

@BioGirl has made only four post on MN, and they're all the same. She only ever starts a thread and never interacts with any of the replies. Here they are:

There's obviously something odd going on here, but despite reports MNHQ don't feel the need to do anything about this.

Smotheroffive · 22/02/2019 20:02

Right,so clearly taking the piss.

...that aside, wth is going on with her posting dates?? How come she gets to post in the future? I've seen this sometimes before. Why is it?

Smotheroffive · 22/02/2019 20:04

Do you Change height as well as size OP? Are you actually ever taking these flights, it would be sad if you booked all these flights and didnt go

lljkk · 22/02/2019 20:27

thanks for that, BIWI. Creepy!!

LoniceraJaponica · 22/02/2019 23:51

I don't usually search OP's posts, but this one rang a bell. I saw that I even answered the one where the OP was going to Orlando.

I wish airlines could offer a range of seating options, priced accordingly. We already have extra legroom seats on planes, so why not extra width seats at a premium? After all it can't be very comfortable for larger passengers to squeeze in standard airline seats, and it is bloody uncomfortable for the passenger next to them.

I once spent a flight from London to New York seated on my left cheek the entire flight because the passenger on my right took up what felt like half of my seat space.

Smotheroffive · 23/02/2019 00:55

Omg! That was ages ago. Maybe she just needs reassure every timeas panicsbefore every flight and too nervous to answer anyone?

If I was that terrifies or whatever though, I really don't think I'd be going and I've been on years before on flights.

RollerJed · 23/02/2019 01:14

There is not 'literally a million and one reasons' why someone is fat Hmm.There's usually a few medical reasons and few personal reasons.

And yes, l'm a little fat phobic as in I don't want to get fat. That's not a bad thing surely?

halfwitpicker · 23/02/2019 01:37

Any of this making sense, op?

DocusDiplo · 23/02/2019 06:54

If someone sitting next to me on a flight was a bit bigger I would not mind. I would deal with it, its life and we are all different and its one plane journey. But I also would not.mind if there was a.grizzly child. I am a nice.empathetic person and I am sure.lots of others are like me too, I think lots.of entitled loud voices on MN do not represent the general more laid back populace.

vinegarqueen · 23/02/2019 09:31

@smotheroffive

Posting dates - is it because the OP is in a different country and therefore where she is it is in the future?
