Off to NY for a few days next in April.
Is it a requirement to have 6 months left on your passport?

Yes, for all countries post brexit (and most before) you also need the online visa waiver that's £14 and process it quite a few days ahead because they weren't that quick (unlike Canada that took 10 mins)

AttilaTheMeerkat · 16/02/2019 17:53

The previous poster in incorrect.

If you are a UK citizen it is not a requirement according to the Foreign office travel advice on the USA. Your passport only needs to be valid for your stay there.

You will need an ESTA but only use the official us government website, the cost is $14 per application.

www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa/entry-requirements says passport needs to cover length of stay

MrsFezziwig · 16/02/2019 18:00

And allow more than "a few days ahead" for the ESTA - if any issues arise with your application it could well take more than a few days to sort out.

Thank you, was hoping that I wouldn't need another 6 months.

We've been lucky. Our ESTAs have always come back within a few minutes of sorting.
I do try and do them in advance just invade though. Although did forget to renew DD's after she got w new passport. Couldn't understand why Virgin wouldn't let me check in a couple of days before our flight. Was the ESTA I discovered. Fortunately new one though in a couple of minutes and able to check in normally online.

OlennasWimple · 16/02/2019 20:06

We have found ESTA to come through almost immediately too. But I have also heard of it taking a day or two, presumably when someone has the same name as a baddie on their watch list

mimbleandlittlemy · 17/02/2019 20:34

Took the full 48 hours for ds’s ESTA to come through recently - not during the lockdown - so do give yourself time.

From US embassy for the UK. I have added bold

For certain nationalities, the passport or other travel document must be valid for at least six months beyond the proposed stay in the United States. The six-month requirement does not apply to United Kingdom passports. If you will be applying for a visa using a passport of a different nationality, please click here to find out if the validity requirement applies.

If you are traveling visa free under the Visa Waiver Program and your passport is not valid for 90 days, you will be admitted until the date on which the passport expires.

If your passport is damaged, we recommend that you obtain a new passport before applying for the visa to avoid any delay in the processing of your application.

No there is an agreement between the USA and UK where your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay.

Romanov · 23/02/2019 12:05

also - take a printout of your Esta, we were waiting for ages when they couldn't find DS online
