Carry on luggage only with a 1 year old?

Reccy2018 · 15/02/2019 07:57

Going to Seville in September for a week with my baby, who'll be 15 months. Hate waiting for luggage and hate paying more for it even more.

Is this doable? Or silly. Would need to buy nappies, wipes, calpol and sun cream over there (or in the airport) I imagine.

Will you be on your own? I can't imagine it will be easy grappling a toddling child, a pushchair and a suitcase on your own. Plus you won't get much clothing for both of you in one small carry on case. Life will be much simpler if you just pay for a case to check in.

avocadoincident · 15/02/2019 08:02

I think it is possible but I was staying with my dad so had full use of their washing machine. The baby had a baggage allowance because of the changing bag so check your airlines rules

avocadoincident · 15/02/2019 08:02

Using a rucksack will free up your hands

Reccy2018 · 15/02/2019 08:03

No, I'll be with my mum and my husband too. So 3 of us, 3 cabin sized bags, and 3 handbag sized bags, 1 baby and 1 pushchair. It's self catering with a washing machine too I should add.

Does that change anything?

Reccy2018 · 15/02/2019 08:04

Yes, me and my husband use rucksacks. Not least because they don't get chosen to go in the hold if there's not enough room in the cabin! Haha

ApolloandDaphne · 15/02/2019 08:08

If there are 3 of you then you can spread the child's clothes between you and then you can wash stuff when you are there so i guess is should be workable.

anniehm · 15/02/2019 08:10

Check your airline, many only allow one bag now and infants only get a small bag often.

Reccy2018 · 15/02/2019 08:15

We've added priority boarding which gives us 2 bags each to carry on. I'll double check about the changing bag as think it'll def be doable if baby gets a bag with toy, nappies for few days, wipes and food!

We always do this never have hold luggage. Half a bag full of Aldi nappies job done and then got a very small pack of dodot ones just to make sure - used those ones first :-)

MrsRolly · 15/02/2019 08:25

We flew with easy jet, the pushchair was free we put it in pushchair bag to go under the hold and stacked it with extras mostly jumpers as we were in Sweeden in Dec!

sar302 · 15/02/2019 08:39

We flew Ryan air I think. On the way there checked a bag and car seat, and carried a change bag, a wheelie bag, a hold all and had baby in the pushchair to the gate.

On the way back we paid to check everything except the change bag and the pushchair! It was such a faff!! Never again! Next time we will check EVERYTHING! Preferably even the baby if allowed...

ImperfectTents · 15/02/2019 08:41

Won't you have to wait for the pushchair anyway?

Reccy2018 · 15/02/2019 09:11

We've got a travel system (Hate that term but there you go) so won't have a pushchair and a car seat, just the car seat on the frame. Think we get reunited with it when we get off the plane? Will have to check that too, cheers for the reminder.
Sar, how much was it to check everything?

We travel very light usually. Me and mum are the same size so could share clothes if desperate 😂 half joking...

I think it sounds doable. Maybe buy things like sunscreen, nappies etc in Boots at the airport if there is one - I think you can do a click and collect order to make sure you get what you need.

When we went to Seville, we couldn't really find any grocery type shops in the city centre, but we didn't look very hard - the only thing we found was one of those poorly stocked, expensive, tiny convenience stores, which is a struggle to self cater from.

But I agree that checked bags make it so much easier. Less to cart round the airport, no need to waste your holiday trying to find toiletries etc, probably cheaper if you normally buy stuff from Aldi etc in the UK, suncream especially is usually quite expensive abroad. You'll need a lot of it in Seville in September, so a few bottles and most of the saving over getting one hold bag and really packing it with useful stuff for the baby will be lost.

HappyDinosaur · 15/02/2019 09:19

Hmm I think you need to check about the travel system as the only puschair/pram equivalents allowed up to the gate are often the ones that fold up really small (I think they have set dimensions for this). Not sure but some airlines (definitely BA) allow you to check two baby items for free e.g. car seat, cot, pushchair etc.

Bryjam · 15/02/2019 09:19

I couldn't pack for a week for myself in a cabin sized case.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 15/02/2019 09:22

If you're Easyjet you can do HandsFree and check in up to six carry-on sized bags for £14. So you don't lose the waiting time but you can pack whatever you like. And no weight limit.

Reccy2018 · 15/02/2019 09:32

Bryjam - I pride myself on being a light traveller! Especially with a washing machine there. (2 shorts, 2 t-shirts, 2 dresses, 1 pair of heels, 1 cardigan, kindle, minimal make up, charger, toothbrush, deodorant, 2 bikinis, 4 knickers. To travel I wear linen trousers, tshirt, light jumper, denim jacket, birkenstocks, hat, scarf/sarong hybrid. Sorted! Easy to get it in a small rucksack).

But yes, perhaps by the time you buy all the suncream, nappies etc you are not much better off...

We are a 10 min metro ride out of the city in Mairena del Aljarafe. Suppose to be a bit cooler up there!

Barbara, I take it you enjoyed Seville going on your username? Did you go with young children?

Reccy2018 · 15/02/2019 09:33

Yes, we're easyjet. I'll look into that, isitmybathtime

Yes, Seville was amazing. We don't have DCs so it was just me and DP and we spent 4 days there as part of a week long tour of Andalucia, that also involved walking the Caminito del Rey and a couple of days in Granada. We did Cordoba as a day trip from Seville.

Only downside for us was that we went in May a few years ago but there was a mega heatwave. It was literally August weather and we got off the bus from Granada and the first thing we saw was a temperature sign reading 46 C Shock. We also missed the Setas, which we didn't find out about until we watched the Travel Man city break programme. That would have been perfect for us, as it is designed to provide shade as well as being a tourist attraction. We spent a lot of time lazing under trees in parks and in cafes in shaded streets with misting systems.

avocadoincident · 15/02/2019 09:43

You can do this for sure!Star

Merrilymerrilymerrily · 15/02/2019 09:50

You are more than likely to have to wait for the pushchair on landing anyway, so it’s only the cost of checking in a bag you will save if that affects your decision

Reccy2018 · 15/02/2019 09:59

We love Granada! Will check out Cordoba too.

I bloody resent putting bags in the hold, I'm not sure why. Haha. I think I'll bring a lot of useless rubbish if I have more space available. Hmm, need to mull.

All very helpful, cheers MN

We are just back from Seville this week with a 14 month old and 5 year old. We flew easy jet and found they were great. You can take 2 items of luggage for the baby plus a large changing bag on board (ours was basically a rucksack).

We only took 2 carry on bags in addition to this, and didn't bother with a buggy taking a little life travel rucksack instead which we found much easier although husband did have to carry it the whole time. My son loves being in it though, much prefers it to a buggy. As Seville is a fairly small airport you won't have long at all to wait for anything you check.

We bought nappies wipes etc our there, loads of convenience stores (carrefore) everywhere including baby food etc. you will have no problem buying things when you are there.

Hope you enjoy it, we are currently wishing we were still there as it was 20 degrees there this week 🌞
