Bloemenmarkt - the floating flower market on Singel.

Tuschinski Theatre - Art Deco/Art Nouveau cinema, just round the corner from the flower market.

DaytimeIsCrazy · 09/02/2019 18:11

We're going for our first ever trip without the DC, in June, so interested to see what everyone suggests.
Anne Frank's House was on our list.

RockysMa · 09/02/2019 18:13

Canal cruise, I think they do them at night too.

Bodyworlds is amazing and educational

Boat trips are fun.

I loved the Rembrandt House but maybe a bit boring for the kids unless they love historical stuff.

The zoo is pretty good too.

The Museum of Our Lord in the Attic

StandUpForYourRights · 09/02/2019 21:26

Wonderful, thank you. Flower market sounds amazing.

I lived there for a couple of years 40 years ago, but I know that the two places I mentioned are still there and still fab.

Museums are a given, you don't need us to tell you that.

It's a wonderful place and you will not find it difficult to eat well for any budget.

Bike hire was cheap and easy, as was bike riding, I imagine that is the same or better.

Have a lovely time Envy

Van Gogh museum and canal boat definitely xx and if you can go to the bulb fields ?

LadyTrixie · 10/02/2019 19:47

Hi I'm an Amsterdam blogger and have loads of ideas and itineraries for just that age group on my blog as I'm also the family blogger for the City of Amsterdam website. Check out the Tweens and Teens posts in particular.

I have to be honest the flower market is a total waste of touristy time and full of plastic tat (although the actual flower fields outside the city are incredible in season) and Bodyworlds is the kind of exhibition you can visit anywhere.

Outside of that there are many many wonderful things to do and see. And eat!

Check out the blog (and the kids section in particular) and message me if I can help with anything

Sorry just seen that you're going in half term. Bulb fields won't be in season. Food wise you'll find a wealth of recommendations on the blog as well.

I went to Amsterdam recently and had lovely tea and cake at this tiny tea house. The host was great too and told us all about the history of the house

Ripley’s believe it or not.
Nemo museum good for kids
Go behind the station and they have free ferries that take you across the river to Adam hotel and the swings that go off the side of the building and great views.

hopeishere · 10/02/2019 20:19

The flower market is crap!! Full of tourist tat.

Zoo - fantastic
Rembrandt House
Van Gough museum
Canal trip
Science museum

A Diamond factory ...my ds (10 at the time) was fascinated!

Chimchar · 10/02/2019 20:43

We really liked Amsterdam Nord. Nice ferry ride, loads of graffiti, cool food/bars...lots of live music and things going on.

My youngest son had the education of a lifetime when we accidentally wandered in to an area with loads of sex shops with interesting window displays! It is what it is, but be aware of where you're wandering if you don't want the kids to see!

Amsterdam was fab. I'd love to go back. Smile

StandUpForYourRights · 10/02/2019 21:55

Thank you all for your brilliant suggestions. It is great to get recommendations as we want to make the most of our time there.

Ladytrixie.....fab blog, thank you so much Smile

@LadyTrixie I've just booked Pure Boats for a birthday treat after reading your blog.

Thanks so much - I'm really looking forward to it!

Anything else you'd recommend for a couples weekend break then I'd love to hear them.

Thanks again.

museumum · 17/02/2019 20:27

We like the zoo and/or adjoined “micropia”.
Canal hop on/off is good.
Nemo

LadyTrixie · 17/02/2019 20:39

Oh thrilled to hear that! They will really look after you. Such a wonderful experience. I know you'll love it.

Couples break or with kids? Your original post mentioned teens.

Hire bikes if the weather is good and cycle through the Vondelpark stopping off at the Classic Blauw Theehuis for a coffee. Have apple pie at Winkel in the Jordaan and wander the streets around there, pop into the hidden courtyard the Begijnhof, have breakfast/brunch at Dignita Hoftuin, Shop in the 9 Little Streets, eat herring from a stand, pop into the Rijksmuseum and be sure to check out the secret library, eat fresh stroopwafels and poffertjes at the Albert Cuyp market, have dinner at De Kas, or for a once in a lifetime experience book two months ahead for an unforgettable dinner at Vuurtoreneiland - a tiny lighthouse island where you'll be taken by boat for a 5 course menu in a bunker (Winter) or glasshouse in Summer.

Message me via the blog or Facebook if you have any specific questions x

MrsT4 · 17/02/2019 21:06

Oh wow! Thanks so much for all these wonderful suggestions.

I'm not the OP, just came across this thread. No kids for us! Haha

Will message you if I have any more questions. Your blog is fantastic btw.

Thanks again :)

LadyTrixie · 17/02/2019 21:27

Oops Blush sorry, should have paid attention. I'm a bit rubbish at MN! Smile.

Well lots of suggestions there most written up on the blog in more depth. Let me know what time of year you're going and as I say if there's anything I can help with just mail me via the blog or message me on AmsterdamWonderland on Facebook x
