Paris - unusual things to do

Kilash · 03/02/2019 16:37

I'm off to Paris with a girlfriend. We have both been a number of times and have seen all the usual museums and sights - any recommendations for slightly off beat things to see/do?

My daughter did a city tour with a guide on a motorbike and sidecar, took two passengers. No idea who through, she said it was adventurous!!

It is a museum but definitely try the natural history museum - it’s in two parts; one really modern and one really traditional but both fascinating!

Have you seen the promenade plantee? Worth a walk along there

AdaColeman · 03/02/2019 19:35

Walk along some of La Promenade Plantée, a floral walkway above street level, starts at Bastille.

Visit Jardin Atlantique, a rooftop garden above Gare Montparnasse, or visit near by Tour Montparnasse for the panoramic views.

Or more panoramic views from top of Galleries Lafayette.

Take lunch or tea at the Institute of the Arab World, mint tea, little cakes and an innovative building.

Segway tour, great fun!

JennyHolzersGhost · 03/02/2019 19:38

Walking round the Canal St Martin is a nice way to spend a fine afternoon. Some nice local bars and bistros, and one of the best bakeries in Paris.

JennyHolzersGhost · 03/02/2019 19:39

I also love walking in the botanical gardens.

AdaColeman · 03/02/2019 19:40

Take a guided tour of the best chocolate shops, lots available.

MrsTerryPratcett · 03/02/2019 19:40

La Rhumerie. Thank me later.

The Paris Mosque has tea rooms, a restaurant and is an unforgettable visit. It's next to the Jardin des Plantes which is lovely.

The Rue Cler Market is on-street and just around the corner from the Eiffel Tower.

Toy sailing boats at the Jardin de Luxembourg.

A tour of the Paris sewers.

Walk around Pere Lachaise Cemetery.

Racing at Longchamp. Trackside admission is quite cheap.

AdaColeman I love the Institute of the Arab World! The building is so beautiful and the cafe is brilliant.

I love Théâtre Paul Rey on île St Louis - tiny wee theatre tucked away in a courtyard where they do lovely piano recitals and other concerts www.theatre-ilesaintlouis.com/

The Musée de la vie romantique (museum of the romantic period) in the 9th arrondissement is lovely, beautiful old building, fantastic collection of paintings and the loveliest wee tearoom with a courtyard museevieromantique.paris.fr/en

The old cinemas along the rue des Écoles and in the general area around the Sorbonne are great - tiny, atmospheric and often showing great old English language films with French subtitles.

Parc des Buttes Chaumont in the 19th is my favourite park in Paris - amazing views over the city, a wee hilltop grotto and bridge across the lake and caves with waterfalls and stalactites.

And the Diptyque shop on Boulevard St Germain is heavenly. Expensive but my God, a candle or bottle of perfume from there is my favourite treat in the world.

Have a great time, i’m jealous as anything Smile

One of the best experiences we had was going to a jazz cave...we had a fab meal in the bistro upstaIrs then an amazing jazz band downstairs. The one we went to is sadly closed now but some recommendations here www.theguardian.com/travel/2017/jan/17/top-10-paris-jazz-clubs-chosen-by-musicians-experts
