Marrakech - heated pool?

Jungfraujoch · 03/02/2019 08:45

Hi all, desperately searching for a hotel with a heated pool. Not a riad as they seem to tend to be a plunge pool type of thing.

Has anyone stayed somewhere where the pool was heated in April or is it the norm that they aren’t?!
Thanks. X

We had tea at the Palais Khum which is two mins walk from the Souks.

It had an indoor pool and the hotel looked lovely. We had a guided tour from the manager - the roof garden and view was beautiful too.

We went just after New Year and sayed in Riad Zalia www.zaliaretreats.com which did have a plunge pool but was too cold to use.

Thank you. Palais Khum does look lovely. I would love to stay in a central riad but I think my DSs would prefer one of the bigger hotels a little further out! But I’m finding a lot of those are unheated too!

Try the Savoy Grand (fairly central) or Be-live (20 mins out).

Jungfraujoch · 03/02/2019 09:27

Thanks Kate I’ll check those out.

I'd recommend a Riad every time! With or without a pool.

SJane45S · 03/02/2019 12:38

We stayed at the Eden Andalou - one of their pools was heated (we went in May a couple of years ago). It's a big hotel on the outskirts & most people stay on an AI basis. It wasn't as characterful as the Riad we stayed in but we did find old Marrakech a bit hardgoing with my elderly parents & 6 year old DD so while I'd agree about Riads being nicer & less vanilla, this place actually suited us better. My DD had a really great time there

WendyCope · 03/02/2019 12:44

Club Med? Right in the centre but away from the hassle. It's lovely.

But, having been to Marrakech last year and many years, and living in Spain, you won't need a heated pool!

SJane45S · 03/02/2019 13:09

Eh, we went end of May & the weather was pretty changeable & the unheated pool was blinkin cold! Didn't stop my DD spending all day in it though (and I'm completely wussy in fairness to WendyCope!)

Thanks! It’s over Easter holidays so weather variable still I think! Anyway thanks for all suggestions will check them all out. X

We stayed in les jardins de la Medina which was lovely - that was November and pool was warm enough to swim in so assume heated?

Looks lovely & characterful!
In terms of tips - hope some of the following will be useful!

  • Take cash. We went 4 years ago so things might have changed but you couldn’t buy currency in advance & the exchange bureau (heaving because of this reason!) at the airport in Marrakech wouldn’t take cards. Which meant I had to spend some time at the ATM at the airport withdrawing about 4 lots as they had a limit per withdrawal
  • Get a guide. We didn’t as I smugly thought I wasn’t a guide person. We got massively lost on day one & my DH & Dad had massive meltdowns
  • go up into the mountains & out of Marrakech
  • From an animal welfare perspective (and my DH works in animal welfare so does make me aware of things I’d be oblivious too!), animals are big tourist business. In the main square the dancing snakes have their mouths sewn up, the monkeys are on chains & the horses giving carriage rides look underfed. These things exist solely because they make money off the back of animal exploitation - give them a wide berth!
Jungfraujoch · 18/02/2019 10:57

Thank you SJane - I read about the animal cruelty - horrible so will definitely be avoiding!

We won’t have a car but would love to do a day trip to the mountains - did you do an organised one?

Kasbah du Toubkal is worth visiting.

We took a minibus to the village and had a lovely lunch high up in the snow topped mountain. It's a bit of a climb from the village but well worth it

Photo of the view below
The other two photos are of the Secret Garden In Marrakech itself...lovely lunch in beautiful surroundings

Wow that is stunning! So you can just have lunch in the hotel?

We found a day tour (drive to the Atlas Mountains, hike to a waterfall, visit a Berber village) from a travel agents near our Riad in the old town. The travel agents in our 2nd hotel (AI place) had a very similar tour for twice the price so maybe take a look at TripAdvisor & ask some local travel agents for a quote?
Somewhere else to add to the list are the Majorelle gardens in Marrakech which were designed by Yves St Laurent. After a mad morning in the souk, they were a real haven of tranquility & beauty. They are popular but it’s easy to find a bench just to sit down & soak it in. There is a Berber museum there too & a cafe

FairyLightBlanket45 · 19/02/2019 14:22

I would also recommend a trip up the Atlas Mountains! Absolutely stunning - all I would say is if anyone suffers motion sickness definately take a travel sick pill!
There’s a couple of places where you may see some of the local children - they aren’t begging, they’re very friendly - it might be worth having a bag of sweets with you as our guide said they quite like the tourists giving them something. One of our group bought a group of them an ice cream each from one of the little shops - guide also said the shop keepers up the mountains appreciate the custom so much (and they were extremely friendly)
We went to a women’s cooperative too which was quite intersting.

In the square (someone remind me what it’s called!) just be aware that they can sometimes just place a snake or whatever round your neck. Because of course they want money for you to have your photo. It was only like 2 dihram but still it adds

Get some orange juice at the square!

Be bloody careful crossing the roads!

I didn’t really find harassment an issue, I was in a large group. I found the locals were covered and 98% of them were in western clothes so as long as you are in respectful clothing you won’t have an issue (I say this as someone who has been to several Middle Eastern countries plus Egypt and such and it varies where you go)

Old town - easy to get lost! Souk - amazing! Easy to get lost. If you go without a guide make sure you stay close together!

Enjoy some delicious Tagine!

FairyLightBlanket45 · 19/02/2019 14:24

I also ended up buying some of their adorable little leather slippers they sell at the souk for every baby I know Blush
