New York Airbnb

I am going on holiday to NY later in the year and we were planning on booking an airbnb apartment. However I've read some stuff that suggests that this is illegal in Manhattan. It all seems a bit ambiguous though. Has anyone got any recent experience or clearer understanding of the law? Any advice would be much appreciated. Also any pointers as to alternative means of booking a nice central apartment. Thanks!

I’m not sure about Manhattan - they do have different rules. We stayed in one in New Jersey. It was great. Flew into Newark. Bus into Manhattan, or just a few train stops from Hoboken, or the ferry.

I liked getting out of Manhattan to go ‘home’, and going in every day was very straightforward.

"It is illegal in most buildings for an apartment to be rented out for less than 30 days unless the permanent tenant is residing in the apartment at the same time."

I lifted this ^^ from here

Rules for Manhattan and the five boroughs are the same. Even if the tenant is present tourists who have booked in good faith can and have indeed been thrown out.

Short term subletting to tourists in the five nyc boroughs is illegal and many types of condos and apartments do not allow their tenants within it to do this. Trying to find an actual legal rental is like looking for a needle in a haystack and rental sites also do not check the veracity of such listings. You will need hotel accommodation.

Illegal. Book a hotel - if you want more space go for a 'suite' hotel.
