Hi!

DP and I are thinking for our Summer holiday this year to fly out to Nice and spend 10 nights there whilst spending several day trips out to Cannes/Monaco/Antibes

Nice is the most affordable place for us to stay- can't afford Cannes or Monaco

Has anyone ever done this before and what was your experience?

Are there any other places in reasonable travel distance by train that we should visit?

Is it worth us getting a hotel with a pool or should we just go to a beach on days we want to relax? Don't mind traveling to Cannes for a beach day as I understand that Nice beaches are pebbley!

Thank you in advance

The beach in Juan Les Pins is lovely. I would stay there or in Antibes and use local trains etc

If you are looking for somewhere affordable might be worth looking at Pierre et Vaccances website. They have holiday apartment complexes in good locations such as Cannes, usually with a shared pool, restaurant etc.

Go a bit further out to Fréjus or St Raphael, the beaches are gorgeous, there are Roman ruins and it's significantly cheaper. The train runs all the way along the coast so you can easily get to Monaco/Nice

It depends what you want to do most of the time really. Shops, restaurants, good transport links but not great beaches - Nice. However Nice is also very touristy, very hit and miss for restaurants, and due to the huge number of visitors not very "French' in the summer if that is what you are after. Cannes isn't too expensive depending on where you stay. The big hotels are extortionate, not so much the small ones and apartments for rent. You also have the Ile des Lerins, great for a day trip and other things going on in the summer. It is a good mix of a very French town (more 'French') than Nice, and a bit of luxury.

It also depends,on the time of year, if you can go outside French school holidays it is much cheaper.

Antibes is nice but packed in summer.

Do you want somewhere quiet or more lively?

Regarding the pool, only you would know how much you would use it. If you are going in the height of summer most pools are only good to cool off in, so full of kids you can't swim!

I would look at some of the smaller places. St Raphael is very nice but a bit far if you want to visit Nice and places to the east, it is also very small if you are wanting somewhere a bit lively. Villefranche is very nice, and Menton, close to Italy is lovely, but again a bit far east if you want to visit towns such as Cannes.

Mandelieu La Napoule is very close to Cannes, with nice sandy beaches and a few nice restaurants. It is busy in summer but not so much as other places, relaxing even in the main holiday weeks. I love it just as well seeing as I live there!!

Nice is a big, crowded city and the beach is 100% pebbles. It’s not the most relaxing place. Great for a day trip, but I wouldn’t want to spend my whole holiday there.

Cannes is v posh & v expensive, with designer boutiques everywhere. It has lovely sandy beaches, however, most of them are owned and operated by the expensive hotels along La Croisette. Expect to pay €40 + per sun lounger per day during the summer, with food & drinks at equally inflated prices. There is a stretch of ‘plage publique’ which gets very crowded.

I much prefer Antibes / Juan les Pins which is quieter (except during peak season, obv), more down-to earth and generally nicer. Menton is also a lovely town.

Top tip : Gelateria del Porto In Antibes, near the harbour, sells the very best ice cream in the world. It’s well worth the inevitable queue.

You don't have to pay on many of he beaches in Cannes. It really isn't that posh and expensive.

I love Nice and think it's pretty under rated! It does have a different feel to it - more Italian than French and has attracted international travellers for so many years that they've left their mark on it. I'd get an apartment in the Old Town - lots of places to eat at the end of a day out. The train station in Nice is pretty central (although a bit of a schlep from the old town although I think there is a tram?). Villefranche is a 10 minute train ride away and is a pretty old town with a much much nicer beach (although go early). Monaco is easy to reach and the journey along the coast by train is stunning. I wasn't a huge fan of Monaco (very built up & expensive) but it's worth going to. You can also get into Italy - Sanremo is about 1hr 20 by train (changing in Ventimiglia) and has a nice palm fringed promenade and old town.
Antibes is nice but it's so long ago I went my memory is really hazy on it!
