Has anyone been to Italy with a small child? We'd be travelling as a family of 4 with 2 small children. If so, where did you go?

It depends what you’re after and when you’re going. There are loads of family friendly resorts on Sardinia but it might be too hot in the height if summer for LOs if they’re very fair skinned or not used to the heat. If you want to stay somewhere with a few easy days out and lots for the kids, then look at Bella Italia right on the shores of Lake Garda. It’s a site used by Eurocamp so it has all the usual mobile home style accommodation but if you book directly with the site, there are other accommodation options including bungalows and apartments. They’re self catered and have a separate bedroom for the kids, but there are quite a few restaurants if you don’t fancy cooking all the time. There are also organised coach excursions to nearby points of interest which makes life just so much easier! It’s not too hot either because of the lake breeze.

Stay in an Agriturismo, ifnyour kids are young, this is a lovely way to enjoy Italy, great food, wine, pool, animals..and not crazy expensive

SJane45S · 27/01/2019 18:14

Yes, many times since the DD was 18 months old. What do you like doing as a family & do you want to stay in one place?

RiverMeadow · 27/01/2019 19:44

Well the youngest DC would be in a pushchair so it would need to be easy to get around. We like eating out, exploring etc. Thanks everyone.

Cala di Falco on the north coast of Sardinia is made up of a hotel, apartments and a few villas. It’s set in gardens close to the main town centre and is just across the road from the sandy beach at Cannigione, with a shuttle service provided most days of the week so you can explore other local beaches. Cannigione itself has restaurants, evening markets, shops and a harbour, all within walking distance so you can enjoy a gentle stroll to take a look at things.
The resort has three pools and a kids’ pool as well as two restaurants, one with a lovely terrace taking in the views, while the other is by the pool. There are free-to-use kids’ clubs and an evening childminding service (extra charge). There’s also a playground. Push chairs, high chairs, sterlisers and changing tables are available on request and there’s a 24-hour baby food preparation and bottle warming area.

Italy bakes in the summer so if you have 2 smaller children, early in the summer (May/June) or late Summer would be best - I'm assuming that neither are school age? Italy is our favourite place and our 3 DD's have been dragged all over. Italian cities see a lot of tourists in the summertime which can make moving about them slow and annoying, particularly when it's really hot - Venice for example even in springtime with a buggy was really really difficult! Bologna with a buggy was much better - less crowded, less expensive, less big and with portico's covering the pavements so even when it was hot, there was shade.
An easy first trip would be to fly into Verona (a number of the cheaper airlines go there, it's a 2 hour flight from London), spend a couple of days in Verona (you may find an apartment easier if either are fussy eaters - try AirBnB) then take the bus from the railway station (takes about an hour and they go very regularly) to one of the towns on Lake Garda. There are all sorts of accomadation types around the Lake from campsites through to hotels so you'd find something to suit you! You can also take trains from Verona (train travel in Italy is cheap, safe and frequent) - Venice is reachable in just over an hour. Verona/Lake Garda are further North so while they do get hot, it doesn't get quite as hot as the South.

In terms of other places that might suit with kids of your ages, the Amalfi coast is beautiful with gorgeous beaches - it is pretty expensive though but if you have the cash then you will find some great places. A package deal with transport included would probably be the easiest with 2 small children but there are public transport options from Naples if you want to save cash and are confident travellers.

Another nice trip we did was flying into Nice (you can get some very cheap flights, again only 2 hours from London) staying a couple of days there and swimming off the gentle beach in Villefranche (a 10 minute train journey) and then taking the train to Sanremo from Nice (it's about an hour 20 journey). Sanremo is on the Italian Riviera - used to be on the super rich yatching route and is very much a place of faded glamour, beaches and palm trees. There's a nice old town (parts of which might be too hilly) there too as well as casino's and the like. From Sanremo you can catch a train to Genoa and fly back from there.

One place I would totally avoid is Lido di Jesolo off Venice. I took my eldest DD and nephew when they were 4 and it was the worse holiday I've ever had! Lido di Jesolo is a sand split built by Mussolini and is basically is a long stretch of beach with lots of 40's/50's hotels behind it. There was a number of run down parks, all the hotels looked like they'd been thrown up with no thought and it was pretty souless and ugly (IMO!). Venice is a bus and then ferry ride away which was a pain. It looked ideal for 2 small kids but I hated it - to be fair though, both my DD and nephew behaved incredibly badly and we had no AC which probably played a big part in it!

Sicily is lovely but of the places we've been, they've not been that buggy friendly. I've not been to Sardinia - I've a friend who goes there frequently as there a number of AI places and it's less hot in August. I don't think she's seen a great deal of Sardinia outside of the hotels at all but horses for courses!

We've been to Cala di Falco - it was lovely.

Applesaregreenandred · 08/03/2019 22:24

We've stayed on Lake Garda a few times - since DS was 2 years old. We normally fly in to Milan Bergamo and hire a car, staying in an apartment with shared pool. There are a few theme parks / water park near to Pescheira, and there is a zoo /animal park you can drive to. You can also get a train to Verona or Venice, although that may be s bit much with very young children.

Most restaurants are family friendly.

TapasForTwo · 08/03/2019 22:31

Lake Garda. The southern end is flat, and buggy friendly.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 08/03/2019 22:37

Oh we liked Lido de Jesolo. Although we stayed at the Union Lido and only left for day trips to Venice, Verona and Murano/Burano. It was cheap and actually very very good.

That said, don’t fly Ryanair, their delays were atrocious both ways and people on the plane were complaining that it happens regularly on that route.

Linguaphile · 09/03/2019 13:24

Lake Garda is beautiful and fab for families, though I would not recommend Bella Italia as it is an absolute zoo. Weekend (also with Eurocamp, though the parc’s own accommodation is better imo) is nicer, it’s a much smaller site (but still with pools and a little kids club) and very family friendly. Stunning views and you can walk along the lake to Salo.

Italy loves children. You'll be fine. :)

When ours were under 5 we went to Italy a couple of times in September - that's a good time to go - lovely weather and very good deals available. We have loved everywhere we've been in Italy except Lake Como though may have been oap hotel and have been to Venice, Rome, Pisa, Florence, Sicily, Amalfi Coast, Arabella Island. Children are always made very welcome and the ice creams are amazing. We got an amazing deal on Arabella Island, £200 for week, when ours were under 5 in September and that was island with beach, pool, trampolines etc and visited Venice from there. In Venice we have stayed on Venice Lido - Villa Edera - this is in Venice and is not the Lido de Jesselo. Its lovely if bit pricey and there's a beach and Venice is amazing. Not very pushchair friendly. Rome is fascinating but quite city like. Sicily might work - we liked it apart from Palermo. Amalfi Coast is beautiful and we did that too around then.

If you do decide to go to Sicily, the organisation Addiopizzo has guidance on the businesses which don’t pay protection money to the mafia, to help you to avoid inadvertently funding Cosa Nostra.
