Who is the best to fly with? Jet2 orRyanair.

We are off to the Algarve in August and need to book flights. The 2 cheapest I have found are Ryanair and then Jet2. Do you have any recommendations as to which is the better company? We have used Jet2 (which was fine) before but not Ryanair. Thank you

Yes I can follow instructions. But when Ryanair decided to charge for hand luggage from November AFTER I had booked and paid weeks earlier - changing the terms of the contract they made with me I decided enough was enough.

They are also the only airline that I have used (and I fly frequently) that require you to pay for check in luggage separately for the outward and inward journey. Why on earth would you take a case away with you and not return with it?

rookiemere · 19/01/2019 20:10

Ryanair are fine as long as you follow instructions to the letter.

Jet 2 are lovely, it's a real treat flying with them although they have been advertising quite a lot on our last flight for on board sales and duty free which got a bit noisy.

Have you fully checked the prices as Ryanair are expensive for luggage and other spurious things?

Orchidflower1 · 19/01/2019 20:12

I would rather walk to my destination than fly Ryan air again! HTH!

Sohumdrum · 19/01/2019 20:21

Jet2, Ryanair are plagued by strikes and then there was the mass cancelling of all those flight a year or so ago due to not calculating flight hours correctly.

LyraBelaqua · 19/01/2019 21:22

No I haven’t fully investigated that prices of Ryanair, it was just a quick search on sky scanner. I’m definitely not going to fly with them. I thought I had heard they were not great and almost everyone here has confirmed that. Jet2 here we come!

I think that’s the best choice OP. Bon voyage.

Graffitiqueen · 19/01/2019 22:34

Right decision. There is no comparison. Jet2 are in a different league to Ryanair.

mishgs · 19/01/2019 22:36

I will never, ever fly with ryanair again. Awful.

redredvino · 19/01/2019 22:43

Jet2 every single time

Hoppinggreen · 20/01/2019 21:10

I don’t actually hate Ryanair unlike many other people but given a choice I prefer Jet2

LoniceraJaponica · 20/01/2019 21:25

Jet2 Jet2 Jet2

RogueV · 20/01/2019 21:26

Jet2

MrsPMT · 20/01/2019 21:30

Agree Jet2, think they recently got voted the best airline in the UK.

Awks · 20/01/2019 21:50

I love everything about Jet2.com except bloody Jess Glynne on repeat!

LoniceraJaponica · 20/01/2019 22:04

I agree. The advert is irritating. We had a Jet2 holiday last year, and it was excellent. DD had a problem with her bathroom, and the rep was brilliant at getting the hotel to move her to a different room.

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/01/2019 07:17

The difference might be less than £200 depending on how much luggage you need to take as the Jet2 price includes quite a large cabin bag so you might get away with less or no hold luggage, but it's quite tricky to accurately compare without actually booking.

Also with Jet2 you can quite often sit together for free whereas with Ryanair if you want to sit together you will almost certainly have to pay.

Also check if the flight times suit you. Jet2 often have daytime flights but Ryanair often very early morning or late at night, so one option may be better for you. Finally, there's nothing to stop you flying out with one airline and returning with the other, you just have to make two bookings. This works well if most of the price difference is in one leg but the other is more similar. You get most of the saving but only take Ryanair one way.

Mayrhofen · 21/01/2019 07:24

Jet2 are a million miles from Ryan air. Our local airport is Leeds Bradford which I believe is Jet2’s main base and they are therefore our main option for European trips. We have flown many many times with them.

Ryan air are now strictly limited to Dublin trips. They are awful.

glamorousgrandmother · 21/01/2019 07:31

Definitely Jet 2. They are very good with plenty of helpful staff.

lostinjapan · 21/01/2019 08:24

I always fly with Ryanair (I live near Stansted Airport where they’re based) and I really like them. They’re punctual, the staff are friendly, they’re always the cheapest, and I prefer flying no-frills.

I did have the same problem as a PP, where I booked before the new cabin luggage rules were announced, and was then informed I’d have to pay to take my bag with me. Which was annoying as I booked believing it would be free. But they made a quick U-turn on that decision, and I did get to take my bag onboard for free in the end. Aside from that I’ve had no problems at all.

A lot of people who complain about Ryanair have unrealistic expectations (e.g. wanting to sit next to their friends for free). Or they fuck things up themselves (e.g. don’t read the luggage rules or misspell their name on their boarding pass) and then whinge when Ryanair won’t fix it for free. I’m not saying that’s the case for people on this thread, but it is for most of the complaints I’ve heard in real life.

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/01/2019 09:24

But why is it an unrealistic expectation to sit next to your travelling companions for free?

It doesn't cost the airline any more to allocate a couple two seats together than it does to deliberately sit them apart and then say 'give us a tenner and you can sit next to each other' does it? Purely a revenue driver.

BTW, You can fly Jet2 from Stansted now.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 21/01/2019 09:57

But why is it an unrealistic expectation to sit next to your travelling companions for free?

It isn’t, but when you can fly to Europe for a tenner you have to expect the airline will try and bolt on extra charges where they can.

Ryanair are full of tricks like this but even if you add on the extra charges the prices are still competitive. As I said before, it’s a budget experience, you very much get what you pay for and no more. But if I’m not paying much, I can live with that.

LoniceraJaponica · 21/01/2019 11:55

"Also with Jet2 you can quite often sit together for free"

Not any more. The last time I tried to get away with not booking seats I discovered that nearly all the seats has been prebooked, and I ended up paying to sit next to DD as there were only 2 seats left together on the plane.

She is older now so it doesn't matter.

somewhereovertherain · 22/01/2019 14:39

I’ve flown Ryanair loads over the last 30 + years only once had a delayed flight.

Can’t fault them. Currently in the Algarve having flown Ryanair. Cost us 50 quid each with priority. Got seated in 1b & c. Didn’t pay for the seats.

Never paid for seats or bags and this is the first time priority and only because it was the cheapest way to take a 10kg bag

I used to fly with Ryan Lon-Dub every six weeks. Would happily book them.

Paddy1234 · 22/01/2019 14:47

We always find Jet2 good
